Eve Best and Stockard Channing join Maryland cast

OHMYGOSSIP — Eve Best and Stockard Channing have joined the cast of ‘Maryland’.
The ‘House of Dragon’ star and the ‘Grease’ actress will appear opposite Suranne Jones in her new three-part ITVX relationship drama, which has been created by the ‘Gentleman Jack’ actress and screenwriter Anne-Marie O’Connor.
George Costigan, Hugh Quarshie, Dean Lennox Kelly, and Andrew Knott will also star in the series, which will be executive produced by Suranne.
It will tell the story about two sisters, down-to-earth mother of two Becca (Jones) and disciplined high-flyer Rosaline (Best), who have grown apart over the years, but they learn to love and respect each other again after some tragic events.
Becca and Rosaline travel to the Isle of Man to repatriate the body of their mother, Mary, leaving their father Richard (George) at home in Manchester.
Confined on the island, they discover shocking information about their mother and find it impossible to escape the ripple effect of her secrets and lies.
ITV’s Head of Drama Polly Hill said: “‘Maryland’ is a beautifully moving story of two sisters, and it’s hard to believe this is Anne-Marie’s first original drama commission.
“It’s a story developed by Suranne Jones and Anne-Marie, and it has been wonderful working with them and Monumental, to bring this story to screen.
“It has a wonderful cast lead by Suranne Jones and Eve Best and we are delighted that Sue Tully is directing. It promises to be a wonderful family drama for ITVX.”
Alison Owen, executive producer for Monumental, added: “We feel privileged and are thrilled that Suranne has entrusted us with this, her original idea, from which Anne-Marie has crafted a wonderful drama.
“With these scripts and the support of ITV, we have attracted a dream cast and director, so we’re feeling very lucky at Monumental.”
Suranne previously admitted she cannot wait to work with Anne-Marie on the drama.
She said: “I’m so excited to be working with Anne-Marie on this project. We both immediately knew how we wanted this story to unfold and to have the support from ITV and Monumental Television to let us tell it in our own way has been a breath of fresh air.
“‘Maryland’ delves into family dynamics and the way in which we ‘label’ each other, sometimes never letting ourselves or our siblings break free from those roles.
“We look at how we grow apart from one another and how sometimes we don’t really know anything about the people we call our own.
“I love how complex sibling relationships can be and I’m thrilled we get to do it over three wonderful hours and not as a ‘side story’.
“‘Maryland’ is an uncomfortable, funny and sometimes difficult story with two sisters at its heart and we can’t wait to take our audience along for the ride.”
‘Maryland’ will film on location in Ireland for transmission on ITVX in 2023.

Jonathan Majors hopes to challenge himself by playing Dennis Rodman

OHMYGOSSIP — Jonathan Majors hopes to play the “unbridled” Dennis Rodman.
The 33-year-old actor is in talks to play the basketball maverick in the movie ’48 Hours in Vegas’, which tells the story of the sports star’s infamous trip to Las Vegas during the 1998 NBA Finals.
Jonathan explained that he is desperate to take on the part of the “eclectic” athlete to test himself as an actor and compared it to his role as the trailblazing Navy pilot Jesse Brown in the film ‘Devotion’.
He told Variety: “His character as a man is one that is unbridled.
“He’s eclectic. He’s an open mind. He’s an open heart. And, selfishly, you want to play a role like that, because it’s gonna push you to that place.
“Jesse Brown teaches me things about my soul and spirit. I know Rodman’s going to too, and I’m just looking forward to getting into it.”
Jonathan will arrive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Kang the Conqueror in the forthcoming movie ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ and he can barely believe that he is starring in the popular superhero films.
He said: “Every time they call and say, ‘Hey, we need you for this’, it’s another miracle.
“Every time there’s an event about it or something breaks about it, I go, ‘Yeah this is real.'”
The ‘Jungleland’ star explained that he felt a sense of disbelief when her first saw himself as the supervillain on screen.
Jonathan said: “He looks different than I do. He is a different man than I am. He used all my material, but he’s a different cat.
“When I first heard the trailer, I didn’t recognise the voice, and he was narrating the whole thing. I was like, ‘What is that?’ I was like, ‘Oh, that’s a great line. That’s a bar; that is a bar.’
“And then they showed who it is and I was like, ‘Oh, oh, oh, okay, cool’.”

The Batman’s Matt Reeves is ‘working on Rogues Gallery movies’

OHMYGOSSIP — Matt Reeves is reportedly developing movies based on Batman’s Rogues Gallery.
The filmmaker – whose first project in the DC Extended Universe was ‘The Batman’ earlier this year – is said to be lined up to helm a number of additional films based on the Caped Crusader’s foes.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Reeves is working with DC Films on expanding the big screen portrayal of Batman’s villains.
The director – who is already serving as executive producer on Colin Farrell’s ‘The Penguin’ spin-off TV series – is said to have multiple films in the works.
These are reported to be feature length adaptations, focusing on “both established” and more obscure” characters.
These will range from the Scarecrow and Clayface to the likes of Professor Pig, while The Hollywood Reporter added: “All those projects are in the very early stages of gestation.”
It’s noted he is working with writers and other directors on finalising the projects, but there are no further details in terms of potential collaborators, casting news or even the number of films being considered.
Reeves previously opened up about the idea of adapting iconic Batman villain Mr. Freeze, and insisted he would be able to stick to his more “grounded” style for the character.
He said: “I think there’s actually a grounded version of that story, which could be really powerful and could be really great.
“I think to me what would be interesting would be to try and unwind the fantastical and see, well, how could that make sense here?”
As well as the rumoured Rogues Gallery films, Reeves is already slated to make a sequel to ‘The Batman’ with Robert Pattinson returning as the Bruce Wayne’s superhero alter ego.

Emmerdale character death toll could hit eight or nine after devastating storm

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Emmerdale’ could kill off “eight or nine” characters this weekend.
The ITV soap is celebrating its 50th anniversary on Saturday (22.10.22) after a killer storm ravaged the village and saw several characters in danger, while Harriet Finch (Katherine Dow Blyton) died in Sunday night’s episode (16.10.22) after falling off a quad bike and getting hit by an explosion following a lightning strike.
Speaking to ITV Yorkshire, director Tim O’Mara warned: “No one is safe. There’s a possibility of eight or nine characters not being around for very long.
“We do got to the hospital on a number of visits – a number of people hurt by debris flying around the village, there are accidents in the woods, trees falling on people.
“There are massive accidents at the farm, which might attract the attention of one or two characters.”
As well as teasing “some stunts in the woods”, Tim suggested there is a lot more to come.
He continued: “There’s a massive problem in the village that will involved two of the other characters. Plus, there’s some stunts in the woods nearby.
“And of course, there’s a wedding. So when you mix all of that up, it’s going to be sensational.”
Scary scenes have already shown Kim Tate (Claire King) surviving after she fell off her horse and hit her head on a rock, while Monday’s episode (17.10.22) showed Sam Dingle (James Hooton) impaled on a digger’s spikes after getting caught up in a cattle stampede.
Characters being killed off won’t be the only drama this weekend, with Tim also promising big changes to the village itself.
He added: “Viewers are in for a number of surprises. They will see parts of the village destroyed.”
And Nicola Wheeler – who stars as Nicola King – admitted the cast themselves found it tough on set due to the use of high powered wind machines conjuring up 130mph gusts which actually flipped cards and destroyed buildings.
She said: “They cranked them up to 100 per cent and you literally can’t walk against them.”

Laurence Fishburne: Matrix 4 wasn’t as good as I hoped or as bad as I thought it would be

OHMYGOSSIP — Laurence Fishburne says ‘The Matrix Resurrections’ “wasn’t as good as he hoped” it would be, but also not “as bad” as he thought it might be.
The 61-year-old actor played Morpheus in the first three films in the franchise, ‘The Matrix’, ‘The Matrix Reloaded’, and ‘The Matrix Revolutions’ between 1999 and 2003, but he was replaced by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for the 2021 film.
He said: “It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. And it wasn’t as good as I hoped it would be.”
However, Fishburne thought Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who reprised their respective roles as Neo and Trinity for the fourth film, “really did their thing” in the movie.
He said: “But I thought Carrie-Anne and Keanu really did their thing. Yeah, that’s what I thought.”
Despite being replaced for the motion picture, Fishburne doesn’t feel he missed out on the film.
Asked if he felt he had missed out on being a part of the franchise’s return, he told Variety: “No, not really.”
In 2020, Fishburne confirmed he had not been “invited” to appear in the latest ‘Matrix’ movie.
He said: “I have not been invited. Maybe that will make me write another play. I wish them well. I hope it’s great.”
Laurence also opened up about his role in the original movie.
Speaking about his part in ‘The Matrix’, he added: “It is probably the role that I’ll be best remembered for, which is great; it’s not the only thing I’ll be remembered for, which is better.
“What I get with him is I’ve got Darth Vader in this hand, and I’ve got Obi-Wan in that hand. I’ve got Bruce Lee, I’ve got Muhammad Ali shuffled in there, and I’ve got kung fu.”

Dermot Mulroney to star in Ruthless

OHMYGOSSIP — Dermot Mulroney has been cast in ‘Ruthless’.
The 58-year-old star has signed on to appear in the action-thriller that will start principal photography in Nevada next week.
Additional cast members are being finalised for the movie, which is being launched for sales by Premiere Entertainment.
The plot follows a high school coach (Mulroney) who – traumatised by the death of his daughter – takes matters into his own hands by going after the men who kidnap one of the students for a sex trafficking operation.
Art Camacho is directing the film from a script he has written together with James Dean Simington.
Meanwhile, Dermot has also signed on to appear in the next ‘Scream’ movie that is slated for release next year.
The actor’s role is being kept a secret but it has been reported that Mulroney will be playing a police officer in the movie.
Other plot details are tight-lipped too with the only snippet being given that those left will “leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter”, according to a synopsis.
The sixth film in the ‘Scream’ series is being helmed by directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett – who have taken over behind the camera from the late Wes Craven.
Courteney Cox, Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Jenna Ortega are also all confirmed to reprise their roles after making their ‘Scream’ debut in the 2022 reboot. They will be joined by Hayden Panettiere – who has not featured in the series since ‘Scream 4’ – who is coming back as Kirby Reed.

Nicolas Cage starring in Sand and Stones

OHMYGOSSIP — Nicolas Cage is to star in ‘Sand and Stones’.
The 58-year-old actor has been cast in the survival-action thriller that is being directed by Ben Brewer.
Michael Nilon has written the script for the film and production is set to begin next month in Dublin.
‘Sand and Stones’ takes place in a world where society has collapsed and the world’s population has plummeted. Cage stars as a man who has been able to survive on a remote farmhouse with his teenage sons.
However, after the sun sets every night, “ferocious creatures” begin to hunt and kill any living being that crosses their path. The family find themselves battling for survival after one of the sons mistakenly opens them up for attack.
Brewer and Cage previously worked together on the 2016 film ‘The Trust’ and the filmmaker also served as the lead visual effects artist on the critically acclaimed movie as ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’.

David Tennant and Stephen Merchant voice support for BBC

OHMYGOSSIP — David Tennant thinks the BBC should be tinkered with “at our peril”.
The former ‘Doctor Who’ star has thrown his support behind the licence-fee funded corporation, as he believes it is one of the “few things that gives our nation the distinctive voice that it has once enjoyed”.
He said: “[The BBC is] one of these things that we tinker with at our peril, I would say.
“To me, the BBC is one of the few things that gives our nation the distinctive voice that it has once enjoyed! It’s something that we have to cling onto with white knuckles to preserve.”
The BBC (British Broadcasting Company) is marking its 100th birthday this week after it was formed on October 18, 1922.
Stephen Merchant, who co-wrote BBC sitcom ‘The Office’ alongside Ricky Gervais, has also voiced his support for the corporation.
He told RadioTimes.com: “I was a young BBC trainee and, as part of a lesson on TV directing, I had to make an instructional film about how to wash a car.
“The next exercise was to make a short documentary. Instead, I made a fake documentary with my friend, Ricky Gervais. I still have the tape. The label reads: 1. How to wash a car. 2. The Office.”
What’s more, BBC Chief Content Officer Charlotte Moore believes the corporation has been “on fire creatively”, but admits the main challenge the BBC faces is to “really evolve with the time” and to “take even more risks”.
Admitting the financial stability of the licence fee is “critical”, she added: “Obviously the two years of cash flat and four years of keeping pace of inflation does mean we’re going to make some tough choices.
“But I have great faith in the BBC’s future and we’re going to do everything we can to ensure the BBC continues to punch above its weight.”
‘Strictly Come Dancing’ couples will perform to an iconic BBC theme tune or dance in tribute to one of the corporation’s most-loved services this weekend to celebrate 100 years of the company.

Hamza Yassin’s Strictly partner ‘doesn’t know’ how he pulled off near-perfect score

OHMYGOSSIP — Hamza Yassin’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ pro partner Jowita Przystal “doesn’t know” what happened to him last weekend when he topped the leaderboard.
The ‘Countryfile’ presenter scored a near-perfect 39 points out of 40 after an impressive Salsa on the BBC One Latin and ballroom show, and Jowita was just as blown away as the judges were.
She said: “I don’t know what happened to Hamza. He blew my mind on the night.”
The pair’s Salsa involved a number of lifts, and Hamza, 32, feared he might drop his pro partner, 28.
He said: “There was a certain fear throughout the whole dance.
“There was constant communication while we’re dancing. We have to, to keep in time.
“Sometimes it’s noises, like taka, taka, taka. It’s really needed.
“There were about three or four hurdles in this last dance that I had to get over and I wasn’t really getting them.
“At one point where I’m lowering her down she saw the struggle on my face and she basically gave me words of encouragement and I was like, ‘OK, here we go.’ ”
The star also revealed he has shed more than a stone since taking part in the programme.
Speaking on ‘Good Morning Britain’, he added: “I’ve lost 8.5kg [18.7lbs], over a stone. All thanks to her [Jowita]. Training is hard on the body.”
While Hamza topped the ‘Strictly’ leaderboard last week, pop star Matt Goss and his partner Nadiya Bychkova failed to impress the judges with their jive, scoring 20 out of 40.
The pair were eliminated from the show on Sunday night (16.10.22).

Kellie Bright ‘surprised’ to reach 1000 EastEnders episodes

OHMYGOSSIP — Kellie Bright is “surprised” to have reached 1,000 episodes on ‘EastEnders’.
The 46-year-old actress has portrayed Linda Carter in the BBC One soap since 2013, and she recently made it to five-figures on the programme, which saw her presented with a bouquet of flowers by executive producer Chris Clenshaw.
In a video posted on the show’s official Twitter account, she said: “Thank you so much ‘EastEnders’ for my beautiful flowers and for surprising me.
“I had to rush off to do another scene, so someone’s rescued my flowers and put them in water for me.
“I was so touched; I couldn’t actually believe it. I’ve seen other people reach their thousand milestone and I’m quite surprised I’ve got there to be honest.
“Thank you so much for giving me the chance to bring Linda to life, and long may it continue.”
After Chris presented Kellie with the flowers, the star admitted she had no idea it was her 1,000th episode.
She said: “Thank you so much! I honestly thought you were winding me up then. ‘Wait, wait, what for?’ I was gone, I was out of the door.”
In February, it was revealed Kellie had returned to ‘EastEnders’ to film scenes for Tina Carter’s (Luisa Bradshaw-White) funeral, and it was later reported she returned to the soap full-time in April.
Kellie had been on maternity after giving birth to her third son, Rudy, in September 2021.
The former ‘Bad Girls’ star – who also has sons Freddie, 10, and five-year-old Gene with her husband Paul Stocker – doesn’t look likely to go on maternity leave again, as the star previously admitted that her third child would be her last.
She said: “I’m so tired, but it’s been amazing. I’m trying to savour every bit as these first few weeks are so precious and this is definitely my last!
“I’m sure your body makes you forget how hard the first few weeks are and what that sleep deprivation is like. It’s like nothing else!
“We went to Cornwall a couple of weeks after he was born which was a bit crazy, but it was lovely having that time just the five of us so we could all get to know each other.”

Peter Crouch offered lead role in sitcom

OHMYGOSSIP — Peter Crouch has been offered the lead role in a new sitcom – as himself.
Writers for BBC One fundraiser Sports Relief have pitched the idea about a sitcom of the former England striker’s exploits to him, and it would mark the star’s acting debut if he accepts.
In his book ‘How To Be An Ex-Footballer’, he said: “I liked it. A fake documentary, elements of both ‘The Office’ and Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon’s ‘The Trip’.
“The scripts were excellent, written by James Kayler and Steve Lawrence who I’d worked with on Sport Relief.
“One mooted episode was called ‘Eat, Pray, Love’, and involved me going on a spa trip, only to accidentally join a cult.
“The final line in the blurb will stay with me for quite a long time, ‘Can Crouchie escape before he’s killed?’
“I may yet do it.”
The ex-Aston Villa ace, who’s married to model Abbey Clancy, joined the panel of ‘The Masked Dancer’ this year alongside Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross, and Oti Mabuse.
But Crouch, 41, reckons he’d give the contestants a run for their money with his signature robot routine that he used to perform after scoring a goal.
He recently said: “I’m an incredible dancer, absolutely stunning!
“I think I’ve been brought into the show for my expertise in that field, really. I’m more of a street dancer, but like I say, I can adapt to any form of dance.
“The robot is just one per cent of the repertoire I have in my locker.”
The father of four was under pressure from his own kids to reveal the mystery celebs under the outfits.
He added: “My girls have been dying to know and pulling every trick in the book to try and get the names out of me.
“They’ve been desperate to know so they can tell their mates. But my lips are sealed. I wouldn’t even trade a reveal for chores around the house. I know that they’d blab it at school and I’d never be invited back!”

Sally Dexter had second thoughts about Emmerdale death

OHMYGOSSIP — Sally Dexter had second thoughts about her ‘Emmerdale’ character’s death, because it made her “profoundly sad”.
The 62-year-old star’s alter-ego Faith Dingle met her maker on the ITV soap last week after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, and Sally admits she questioned why she thought her character’s dramatic passing away plot had been “such a good idea”.
She said: “Almost immediately we started it I began thinking, ‘Why did I think this was such a good idea?’
“It did seem like a good idea at the time, but it made me profoundly sad.
“But then again leaving something you love is always going to be like that and Faith loves life.”
Thursday’s (13.10.22) ‘Emmerdale’ episode – ahead of the ITV soap’s 50th anniversary special last Sunday (16.10.22) – largely focused on the Dingles saying goodbye to Faith earlier than they expected, and Sally hopes viewers didn’t feel “depressed” when they tuned into the ep.
She added to Metro.co.uk: “It wasn’t easy, was it? As long as we didn’t depress people.
“We wanted to do justice to a story we felt needed to be told. It was done with a lot of love.”
In May, it was revealed Faith was to discover her breast cancer had returned, and Sally admitted she felt a “real responsibility” to tell the hard-hitting plot.
She said: “It’s upsetting, but really important as a storyline, because it’s more than a storyline for so many people.
“It matters to people who are going through it as well as people who will go through it. I feel a sense of real responsibility, but also a privilege to be doing this storyline.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Tom Allen has discovered he is related to Gloria Hunniford.
The stand-up comedian finds out he is a cousin of the Northern Irish TV star after tracing his lineage on this week’s episode of ITV genealogy show ‘DNA Journey’.
During Thursday’s (20.10.22) episode, comedian pals Joel Dommett and Tom embark on a road trip around the UK to delve into their ancestry.
After learning about the tragic history of Tom’s great grandparents, which includes a criminal past and his grandmother being given up for adoption, the biggest shock comes when it’s revealed that the ‘Apprentice: You’re Fired’ host is related to TV legend Gloria.
Leading up to the moment where Tom finds out, he says: “I’m so nervous. It’s really intimidating, the whole thing. What if they’re like, slightly irritated by me. It’s exciting, but … I can’t rest.”
Gloria, not knowing who she’s related to, replied: “Oh my goodness! I love both of you.”
Dumbfounded by the news that Tom is her cousin, the ‘Loose Women’ star said: “Is it you? Oh, it’s you Tom?” She then hugs a disappointed Joel.
The comedians and TV presenters are the latest pair of celebrities to research their family trees for the show.
‘Good Morning Britain’ host Kate Garraway recently discovered she was related to author Michael Bond, who is best known for his stories about marmalade munching Paddington Bear.
Other stars who have embarked on a DNA search included presenting duo Ant and Dec, and ice-skating Olympians Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean.
In next week’s episode, stars of ‘Gavin and Stacey’, Larry Lamb and Alison Steadman, will go on the journey to learn more about their family ties.

Mel Giedroyc pulls out of panto due to ‘personal reasons’

OHMYGOSSIP — Mel Giedroyc has pulled out of touring pantomime ‘Mother Goose’ due to “personal reasons”.
The 54-year-old TV presenter was due to portray the Goose in the panto, opposite ‘Lord of the Rings’ actor Sir Ian McKellen and comedian John Bishop, but she has made the “difficult decision” to withdraw.
She said in a statement: “Due to personal reasons, I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the forthcoming production of ‘Mother Goose’.”
Former ‘Great British Bake Off’ presenter Mel also admitted she cannot wait to see the production herself because she and others need a “bit of joy”.
She added: “I am thankful to the producers of the show for being so understanding and wish everyone involved in the production a fantastic tour throughout the UK and Ireland.
“Now, more than ever we all need a bit of joy, and I can’t wait to see it myself. I know it is going to be fantastic.”
A spokesman from Theatre Royal Brighton said: “Everyone in the show sends love and best wishes to Mel and her family. Casting for the role of The Goose will be announced soon.”
In June, it was revealed Mel was to front ‘The Really Really Rude Puppet Show’.
She called the new Channel 4 show a “celebration of erotic fan fiction” as each week a different star will read out a steamy story written about themselves by an amateur internet author, which will be brought to life by a series of puppets.
She said: “This is going to be a celebration of erotic fan fiction. With puppets. Imagine a world where Jackie Collins meets ‘Thunderbirds’.
“I’m so looking forward to a trip to ‘Love Island’ … via Tracy Island.”
