Gemma Collins discovers family link to Jack The Ripper

OHMYGOSSIP — Gemma Collins has uncovered a family link to Jack The Ripper.
‘The Only Way Is Essex’ star discovered the connection while taking part in BBC ancestry series ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ as experts revealed her great-great-great grandfather, William Williams, lived on Dorset Street in East London with his wife and three children – the same street where Ripper victim Annie Chapman lived prior to her murder 1888 and where the body of Mary Jane Kelly was found two months later.
Gemma – whose family were recorded as living there in 1900 – told the BBC: “No-one knows who the ripper was, but we lived next door to where a lot of his victims were being killed. You just don’t know,.
“I think I was related to him … It’s just bizarre, isn’t it? Could it be my family? Could he be alluded to be my family?”
During filming, Gemma also discovered more about her mother Joan’s family history – overturning the previous belief that she had been abandoned by her mum as a child with experts suggesting it was more likely Joan was taken away from her mother by the authorities.
Gemma, 43, said: “It was very overwhelming, very, very bizarre, to find out all this stuff we’ve not known for so long. It’s bittersweet and amazing.
“It’s been very cathartic putting my mum’s mind at rest about so much stuff that was unanswered for her.”
It comes after Gemma revealed she has been busy with TV work and had to turn down an offer to appear on ‘The Traitors US because she had another commitment.
She was quoted by the Daily Star newspaper’s Hot TV column as saying: “I got asked to do ‘The Traitors’ last series. But I couldn’t do it because I was working on something else.
“When it comes to TV shows, if they ring me and they say, ‘Do you want to do this?’ then I’ll either say yes or no. Whatever the universe is going to bring me … it’s all good.”

Appearing on ‘Strictly’ spin off show ‘It Takes Two’ on Monday (23.09.24), she said: “First of all I think we’ll sparkle this [sling].
“And we still have a perfect position on his right arm, and we’ve got to do perfect footwork.
“We might even do a lift on (his right) arm. So I think I’ll work around it. I’ll make it work.”

Lady Gaga’s pop persona helped create Joker character

OHMYGOSSIP — Lady Gaga used her experience of reinventing herself within the music industry to create her role in ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’.
The singer plays Lee- aka Harley Quinn – in the new movie opposite Joaquin Phoenix as Batman’s nemesis the Joker and she’s revealed creating characters in her music helped her when it came to pulling together ideas for her latest onscreen role.
Speaking to Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Gaga explained: “I think that for me, this idea of dual identities was always something that was a part of my music-making.
“I was always creating characters in my music, and when I made Lee for Joker, she just really had this profound effect on me.
“The film had so much music in it, so much music that I love, and I was able to discover the character through the story, through the music that we did live every day as well as dance and the costumes and the make-up.”
The pop star went on to explain the character of Lee didn’t “leave” her after the cameras stopped rolling – so that’s why she was inspired to record a companion album to the film called ‘Harlequin’.
She added: “So I kind of had this deep experience with the character and she just didn’t really leave me creatively, and I decided I wanted to make a whole album inspired by her … ”
It comes after Gaga revealed she used her experience with “mania and chaos inside” to inform her performance of the comic book character.
She told the new issue of America’s Vogue magazine: “Harley Quinn is a character people know from the ether of pop culture.
“I had a different experience creating her, namely my experience with mania and chaos inside — for me, it creates a quietness.
“Sometimes women are labeled as these overly emotional creatures and when we are overwhelmed we are erratic or unhinged. But I wonder if when things become so broken from reality, when we get pushed too far in life, what if it makes you…quiet?
“I would say that I worked from a sense-memory perspective: What does it feel like to walk through the world and be … braced, in an intense way? And what happens when you cover up all of the complexities beneath the surface?”
‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ hits cinemas on October 4 and ‘Harlequin’ lands on Friday (27.09.24).

Samuel L. Jackson amazed at how quickly he completed nine-picture MCU deal

OHMYGOSSIP — Samuel L. Jackson finds it “crazy” how quickly he completed his nine-picture deal with Marvel.
The 75-year-old actor first appeared as Nick Fury in 2008’s ‘Iron Man’ and admitted he expected the long-term contract he’d signed would take years to fulfill, only for him to make his ninth appearance as the superspy just over a decade later in 2019’s ‘Captain Marvel’.
He told GQ magazine: “I knew I had a nine-picture deal.
“[Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige] said that, ‘We’re going to offer you a nine-picture deal.’ How long do you have to stay alive to make nine movies?
“It’s not the quickest process in the world. I didn’t know they were going to make nine movies in like two and a half years.
“It’s just kind of crazy! Oh s***, I’m using up my contracts. It worked out.”
Despite his original deal expiring, the actor has no plans to retire his character and has also appeared in 2019’s ‘Spider-Man: Far from Home’, 2023’s ‘The Marvels’ and his own Disney+ series ‘Secret Invasion’.
Elsewhere in the interview, in which he looked back on some of his most iconic roles, Samuel admitted studio bosses had to splash out a “bunch of money” on reshoots for 2006’s ‘Snakes on a Plane’ in order to add more swearing.
He said: “They were trying to make a PG-13 movie, and you can only have one ‘f***’ or some s*** like that in it.
“And I told them, ‘Look, I gotta say motherf**** in this movie. There’s motherf****** snakes all over this plane.’ They’re like, ‘Aw Sam, come on! No.’ I said ok fine, they were out.
“They test the movie and test the movie. All of a sudden, we gotta do a reshoot. It cost them a bunch of money to get that ‘motherf*****’.”

Monty Don reveals reason why he always wears scarf on Gardeners’ World

OHMYGOSSIP — Monty Don always wears a scarf on ‘Gardeners’ World’ for continuity.
The 69-year-old horticulturist has presented the long-running BBC gardening show since 2003 and has given fans an insight into filming show and explained why he’s always got a scarf off on.
Speaking on the ‘BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine’ podcast, he said: “We film out of sequence. That’s the reason I always wear a scarf when filming. Because if you see me in a crowd, even if I get the other things a bit wrong, if I’ve got the scarf the same, you overlook the face, the shirt might have a collar or not have a collar, or might be a different shade of blue.”
He added: “It was a trick that someone told me about 20 odd years ago, that if you have a hat, a bag or a scarf that’s what people notice.”
The broadcaster also recalled having to be hosed down so it didn’t look like he was suddenly dry when they filmed after a downpour of rain.
He recounted: “We were filming and the rain was pouring down. The camera got wet so we had to stop, luckily the electronics were OK. The producers said ‘we’ve started this shot, we’ve got to finish it’. So we set the camera back up, got a hose out and someone stood there and hosed me down because of the continuity. Otherwise I would have gone in wet and come out dry.”

Shayne Ward forced to wear slippers outside as Strictly leaves his feet ‘in bits’

OHMYGOSSIP — Shayne Ward has been wearing slippers outside as ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ is taking its toll on his feet.
The 39-year-old former ‘X Factor’ winner shared a video of him donning knee pads and slippers on a “quick break” from rehearsals this week, and revealed the constant dancing has left his feet “in bits”.
In the Instagram update, he said: “Hey everybody, hope you’re all well. So, I’m heading back to rehearsals now with Nancy.
“Just finishing my quick break. She told me it’s a quick break. She said, ‘get out there, get back’.
“And this is my getup today, look, knee pads and slippers. Thank god it’s not raining.
“My feet are in bits. So, I’m trying to keep them as comfortable as possible.
“Because when I get back into that room… it’s murder.”
Shayne and his professional dance partner Nancy Xu, 33, scored 21 points for their Samba on the first live show last week, and this week they will dance a Tango to ‘The Door’ by Teddy Swims.
Meanwhile, Shayne recently addressed criticism that he is too cocky on the BBC one dance show, and insisted his nerves are being mistaken for “overconfidence”.
Reacting to the social media comments on his Instagram Story, he said: “Strictly is amazing and I love being part of it.
“But through my smile on TV I’m as nervous as the next person.
“Not cocky or overconfident… I’m nervous!
“I just gotta work hard and listen to my wonderful teacher Nancy Xiu. All I can do is my best!”

Jack Whitehall reveals his ‘big wake-up call’ after gout scare

OHMYGOSSIP — Jack Whitehall had a “big wake-up call” when he was told he had “pre-gout”.
The 36-year-old comedian has transformed his lifestyle and diet since being told by a doctor that he could develop the painful arthritic condition if he didn’t change his ways.
Jack admits he developed a “dad bod” after welcoming his first child into the world – a daughter named Elsie – with girlfriend Roxy Horner, a year ago, but he threw himself into getting into shape for his upcoming psychological thriller series ‘Mallice’, and he subsequently avoided gout.
He told Jamie Laing on his ‘Great Company’ podcast: “The dad bod had set in and I was drinking wine every night. I went to a doctor and he told me I had pre-gout – that was a big wake-up call.
“My dad had gout and I have made jokes about him having gout relentlessly on our shows.
“But now I am post pre-gout, I am proud to say. And I didn’t have gout.”
Meanwhile, it was recently revealed that Jack has become one of the UK’s richest comedians.
The ‘Fresh Meat’ star is said to have pulled in £2 million last year alone – taking his total net worth up to £11.4 million – mostly thanks to his string of Netflix shows he hosts alongside his dad Michael such as ‘Jack Whitehall: Travels With My Father’.
An industry insider told The Sun newspaper’s TV Biz column: “There is no stopping Jack. Even becoming a dad hasn’t slowed down his earnings — and the commissions keep coming.
“He remains hugely likeable, and crucially his comedy appeals to advertisers as it’s safe and clean.
“Leaning on the relationship he has with his grouchy dad Michael and fun-loving mum Hilary has helped take him from laddy topics to more relatable ones, too. It’s hard to see a time when Jack won’t be popular.”

JB Gill still does daily morning school run before heading to Strictly training

OHMYGOSSIP — JB Gill still does the morning school run “every day” with his children before heading to ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ training.
The 37-year-old pop star – who is best known for being part of boy band JLS – is competing on this year’s series of the BBC Latin and ballroom competition, and admitted it’s important to him that he can still fulfil his responsibilities as a dad, while juggling his hectic schedule.
JB – who has Ace, 10, and Chiara, six, with backing dancer wife Chloe Tangney – told the BBC’s ‘Tiny Happy People’: “Family is everything to me. Chiara has already made cards and little tokens for me to put in my dressing room for the live shows and then my wife will be there every single week for as long as I’m in it.
“Ace wants to watch all the shows live but he has football the following morning so we’ll watch with the kids after football on Sunday.”
When asked about how he plans to balance his time between training and his brood, JB – who is partnered with pro Amy Dowden – shared that Chloe is a great support system and he plans to still be a part of the children’s daily routine.
He said: “Chloe is the best. She will literally hold down the fort for me while I’m in rehearsals, but I’m planning to do the morning school run every day.
“And once the kids have finished school and all their activities, we’ll hopefully be able to have dinner together most days which is an important time for us to debrief about training and chat about the days that we’ve had.”
JB – who previously won the Christmas special of ‘Strictly’ 10 years ago – also revealed that his family thought he was announcing a pregnancy when he told them the news he was joining this year’s series.
He said: “I invited all my family over for a BBQ and announced that I was on Strictly there!
“They all thought I was announcing a pregnancy with my wife Chloe, so they were expecting different news, but the whole family are fans of the show and they’re looking forward to watching me on TV and even coming down to the studio to cheer me on.”

Riley Keough and Callum Turner replace Kristen Stewart and Josh O’Connor in Rosebush Pruning

OHMYGOSSIP — Riley Keough and Callum Turner are to replace Kristen Stewart and Josh O’Connor in ‘Rosebush Pruning’.
The upcoming movie – which is being helmed by Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz – was initially going to see 34-year-old Stewart and O’Connor, also 34, in the leading roles, though it has now been revealed the ‘Daisy Jones and the Six’ actress, and the ‘Masters of the Air’ star have taken the former pairs’ parts.
The two actors will be joining the likes of Elle Fanning, Pamela Anderson, Jamie Bell, Lukas Gage, Tracy Letts and Elena Anaya in the flick, which is currently filming in Spain.
While exact plot details about the picture are unknown at the moment, Aïnouz teased that the project would challenge audiences’ preconceived concepts of “the traditional family and the patriarchy”.
He told Variety: “I’m so excited to bring this audacious and delicious script to life, which challenges our notions of the traditional family and the patriarchy, with this brilliant ensemble of actors who I have long admired.”
Keough – who is the granddaughter of music icon Elvis Presley – made a name for herself after appearing in 2012’s ‘Magic Mike’ alongside Channing Tatum and the 2015 blockbuster ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, though previously admitted she didn’t think she would be “taken seriously” in Hollywood.
She told The Guardian newspaper: “[I had] amazing opportunities! I walked into agencies, met with agents.”
However, she admitted: “I felt that I wouldn’t be taken seriously.”
Meanwhile, Turner will be coming off his role as rower Joe Rantz in 2023’s ‘The Boys in the Boat’.
The movie – which was directed by George Clooney – followed the true story of the University of Washington rowing team that won gold at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, though the actor admitted he and his co-stars were “awful” with their oars to begin with.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he said: “We were awful. and I could see behind the smile and the thumbs up, the pain and the fear in George’s soul.”

Alan Tudyk added to James Gunn’s Superman in mystery role

OHMYGOSSIP — Alan Tudyk will appear in James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ in a mystery role.
Although filming on the upcoming DC superhero movie has finished, the 53-year-old actor – who voices the villain Doctor Phosphorus in the studio boss’ Max TV show ‘Creature Commandos’ – has been added to the cast of the blockbuster in an undisclosed part.
In July, Gunn, 58, confirmed shooting on the film – which stars David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, Rachel Brosnahan, Isabela Merced and Milly Alcock – had been completed and the project had entered post-production.
Reflecting on his time working on the picture, the director said he felt “forever grateful” for the “goodness and kindness and love” he experienced while making the flick.
He wrote on Instagram: “And that’s a wrap. God bless our cast and crew whose commitment, creativity, and hard work have brought this project to life.
“I set out to make a movie about a good man in a world that isn’t always so much. And the goodness and kindness and love I’ve encountered on a daily basis on the set has inspired me and thrust me forward when I felt too spent to move on my own. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It has been an honour.”
The filmmaker added: “The destination has been ‘Superman’, but the journey has been the toil and the laughter and the emotions and ideas and magic we’ve shared together on set – and for that I am forever grateful.”
Meanwhile, Hoult revealed he had been “working out” to play the Man of Steel’s arch-enemy Lex Luthor in the picture, which is slated to hit cinemas in July 2025.
During an appearance on the ‘Inside of You’ podcast, the 34-year-old actor explained the idea stems from a Superman comic, saying: “I have been working out. There’s that bit in ‘All-Star Superman’ [comic book] where he [Lex] talks about his muscles being real and hard work and all that. I kind of took that as a little bit of fuel for the fire.”

Michael Mosley’s widow accepts posthumous podcast award for late husband

OHMYGOSSIP — Michael Mosley’s widow thanked everyone for the “outpouring” of love for her late husband as she accepted a posthumous award for his BBC Radio 4 podcast ‘Just One Thing’.
Dr. Clare Bailey Mosley gave an emotional speech as the late TV doctor was inducted into the British Podcast Awards’ Hall of Fame in London this week.
She said: “I wish more than anything that Michael was here himself to be collecting this award.
“Michael knew that Just One Thing had really connected with people, he loved the simplicity of the format and being able to genuinely help people.
“The outpouring to me and my family in the last three months has shown us that it wasn’t just the podcast they loved, it was Michael too.”
She said the much-loved star – who was credited with popularising the 5:2 diet – spent “many happy hours” recording the series from their “cupboard”.
She continued: “He spent many happy hours recording in our cupboard, making Just One Thing. My role was to supply coffee and sound effects.”
The ‘One Show’ regular passed away at the age of 67 in June on the Greek island of Symi after he vanished during a walk in sweltering temperatures whilst holidaying with his spouse.
She added: “Life can be shorter than you ever imagine, and so if there’s one thing you do today, hug your loved ones, tell them they are loved, don’t ever take time for granted.”
In July, the BBC honoured his memory with ‘Just One Thing Day’.
It involved everyone doing ‘Just One Thing’ in tribute to the health podcast’s host across BBC radio and TV.
His widow previously vowed to continue his work as she paid tribute to her husband.
She again thanked the public for their “outpouring of love” in the wake of the health expert’s death.
Clare posted on Instagram: “Thank you all for your wonderfully supportive messages. The outpouring of love from so many people has meant a huge amount to me and my family.
“I’m going to be quiet for a while. I’m sure you will understand. But I will be back here soon. I very much want to continue with the work that gave Michael and myself so much joy and such a sense of purpose.
“Once more thank you so much for respecting my family’s privacy so kindly.
“Michael was an amazing man. Thank you for seeing that too. We miss him so much.”

Rudolf Walker was ‘saddened’ when Pat Butcher was killed off EastEnders

OHMYGOSSIP — Rudolph Walker was left devastated when Pat Butcher was written out of ‘EastEnders’.
The 84-year-old soap legend, who plays Patrick Trueman on the BBC One show, built up a strong rapport with Pam St Clement, 82, whose iconic character Pat was killed off in 2011, and was “saddened” when she filmed her tragic final scene.
Sharing his fond memories of working together in his memoir ‘Walking With Dignity’, Rudolph penned: “Working with Pam was a joy – her timing, the twinkle in her eye in our flirting scenes, and her support from day one was invaluable. I was saddened when such an iconic character was written out of the series.”
Pam quit the soap after 25 years and compared retiring her role to “a bereavement”.
She said at the time: “I have enjoyed 25 and a half wonderful years in EastEnders creating the character of Pat but feel it’s time to hang up her earrings. Leaving the EastEnders ‘family’ will be akin to a bereavement. But I’m looking forward to the other work and life opportunities that I will have the time to pursue.”
However, she did make a brief return in 2014, for a Children in Need special, after Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) knocked his head and had a vision of Pat.
And she was brought back from the dead again, in 2016, when she appeared in her character’s signature giant earrings and shocking pink lipstick alongside the late Dame Barbara Windsor’s iconic character Peggy Mitchell as she said her final goodbye to Walford.
Rudolph has been on the long-running programme for 23 years, and finally put pen to paper to tell his life story with ‘Walking With Dignity’.
As well as his stint in ‘EastEnders’, the star is also known for portraying Bill Reynolds in ITV sitcom ‘Love Thy Neighbour’, which ran for eight series from 1972 to 1976.
In 2021, Rudolph was awarded a CBE for his services to drama and charity through his Rudolph Walker Foundation.

ITV reportedly shelves Saturday Night Takeaway spin-off Ring My Bell

OHMYGOSSIP — ITV has reportedly shelved ‘Saturday Night Takeaway’ spin-off ‘Ring My Bell’.
The format for ‘Ring My Bell’ was based on the popular segment from ‘Ant and Dec’s ‘Saturday Night Takeaway’ – which aired its final series earlier this year – and involved Ant and Dec taking over live Ring video doorbell feeds from unsuspecting members of the studio audience and audience members trying to recognise whether the doorbell was their own in an attempt to win a cash prize.
The pilot for the show was hosted by comedy and podcasting duo Chris and Rosie Ramsey.
However, despite the segment being a hit on the programme, TVZoneuk.com reports that there are no plans for a full series in the immediate future.
ITV is yet to comment on the future of the show.
It comes after popular quiz show ‘Tenable’ was axed by the broadcaster.
The show – which offered a cash prize of up to £125,000 to groups of contestants tasked with filling in lists of 10 items each – was hosted by ‘Harry Potter’ actor Warwick Davis and former ‘Coronation Street’ star Sally Lindsay.
An ITV Spokesperson said: “Tenable has been a much loved ITV game show since it launched in 2006. Whilst there are no brand new episodes currently planned, fans of the show can still watch over on ITVX.”

Phillip Schofield shed 13 pounds during 10-day desert island stint for Cast Away

OHMYGOSSIP — Phillip Schofield has revealed he dropped 13 pounds during the 10 days he spent on a desert island for ‘Cast Away’.
The scandal-hit former ‘This Morning’ host is making his TV comeback on the brand-new three-part Channel 5 series next week, and since filming the show, he’s been trying to build muscle after shedding the weight.
Alongside a video of him lifting in the gym, he wrote on his Instagram Story: “Leg day. Putting back the 6kg I lost on the island with muscle… not carbs.”
Phillip has teased that he won’t hold back on the programme.
Speaking in a trailer for the upcoming show, he said: “I’ve been cast away on a desert island, completely on my own, all I have is camera gear, and I can say whatever I want about whatever I want.
“It’s my chance to tell my side of my story.
“I know what I did was unwise, but is it enough to absolutely destroy someone?”
The disgraced star is said to have been inundated with TV offers since he quit the brunchtime show last year, but 16 months on he will return to the small screen in the new series, which will see him based on a desert island for 10 days with nothing but camera equipment to document his time.
Phillip, who quit ‘This Morning’ and later ITV entirely when he admitted to having lied about an “unwise, but not illegal” affair with a younger male colleague, insisted ‘Cast Away’ is the only project he felled “compelled” to take part in.
He said: “This is most definitely a first for me and the only thing I felt compelled to do. It appealed to me on so many levels.
“I’ve recently had a lot of time to think about my life, what went right and what went wrong, but I’ve always had the safe arms of friends and family wrapped around me.
“This time it’s just me, no ‘phone, no comforts, no crew and only lip balm as a luxury. I’m looking forward to exploring the island, trying to tie knots to secure my shelter and foraging and fending for myself in the wild … with no help.
“Maybe I’ll be Robinson Crusoe, or maybe I’ll just be Tom Hank’s Wilson and quietly drift off into the wild blue yonder!!”
‘Cast Away’ kicks off from 9pm Monday on Channel 5.

Red One director Jake Kasdan promises that Christmas movie will be ‘epic’

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Red One’ director Jake Kasdan has teased the movie will be “a little more kick-a**” than other festive flicks.
The picture follows a rag-tag team of special forces as they try to save Christmas after Santa Claus is kidnapped from the North Pole, and the 49-year-old filmmaker has now said the movie will be a “more aggressive kind of action-comedy” that is usually seen in the season, while retaining some more traditional festive elements.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said: “You don’t do this if you don’t love Christmas movies.
“So a big part of it was trying to figure out how to bring in all of those Christmas elements, even in this slightly edgier, more aggressive kind of action-comedy and let them resonate on their own.”
The upcoming film – which hits cinemas in November – sees Kasdan reunite with Dwayne Johnson, 52, in what is the first project for the pair since they worked together on 2019’s ‘Jumanji: The Next Level’, and the director stressed he wanted to collaborate with the actor again because “he’s able to do things that really nobody else can do”.
Kasdan explained: “I believe that he’s a singular film presence.
“And if it’s the exact right thing for him, then he’s able to do things that really nobody else can do, and you can’t picture anyone else in a part that he’s played.
“The Bravestone character in the ‘Jumanji’ movies was like that, and in a completely different way, Cal, his character in this movie, is also like that.”
The ‘Bad Teacher’ moviemaker added that the tone of the picture – which also stars Chris Evans, J.K. Simmons, Lucy Liu and Bonnie Hunt – and its plot was inspired by producer Hiram Garcia’s original story, which Kasdan described as a “wild Christmas action movie that takes place partly in the world as we know it, and then partly in this mythological realm”.

Joker: Folie a Deux director Todd Phillips reveals sequel was motivated by sadness

OHMYGOSSIP — Todd Phillips decided to make ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ after finding that he and Joaquin Phoenix were “really sad” after finishing the first movie.
The director, 53, and 49-year-old actor – who plays the Joker/ Arthur Fleck in the picture – have returned to the dark DC universe with the follow-up to the acclaimed 2019 flick, and Phillips has now revealed he and Phoenix agreed to develop a sequel once the pair found they “didn’t want it to end”.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the filmmaker said: “After the first ‘Joker’, Joaquin and I were really sad. Like, really sad. We didn’t want it to end.
“Not only because we like working together, but because we didn’t want to leave Arthur. We loved Arthur and became attached to that character. Simply put, it was to spend more time with Arthur.”
The movie follows the criminally insane Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) as he falls madly in love with Lady Gaga’s Arkham Asylum music therapist Lee – a version of DC Comics’ Harley Quinn – and the director explained he wanted to explore the titular character’s “light” and internal “romance” in the picture.
He said: “He had issues. Clearly. But, there’s a light, a beauty, and a romance inside of him.
“It was something Joaquin and I talked about early on; yes, he’s out of step with the world. However, there’s a romance inside of him, and there’s music inside of him.”
Even though the romance can be “kind of violent”, the filmmaker stressed the budding relationship between Arthur and Lee still had an element of warmth to it.
He said: “What happens when a guy who hears music inside his head finds love for the first time in his life? Maybe the music that he hears inside his head starts coming out. Why wouldn’t that music come out when he meets somebody who gives him the time of day?
“His biggest issue in the first movie, outside of childhood trauma, was a severe lack of love.”
While both Phillips and Phoenix were desperate to reunite for ‘Folie a Deux’, the filmmaker previously hinted the movie would be the final instalment in the franchise because the team felt like they’ve explored all that that world has to offer.
He told Variety: “It was fun to play in this sort of sandbox for two movies, but I think we’ve said what we wanted to say in this world.”
