Toby Jones and Monica Dolan to star in ITV drama Mr Bates vs. The Post Office

OHMYGOSSIP — Toby Jones and Monica Dolan are to star in new ITV series ‘Mr Bates vs. The Post Office’.
The ‘Detectorists’ actor will play titular character Alan Bates in the four-part ITV1 and ITVX drama series, which will also feature Julie Hesmondhalgh, Lesley Nicol, Will Mellor, and Katherine Kelly.
It will tell the story of what is widely regarded as one of the greatest miscarriages of justices in British legal history, when hundreds of innocent sub-postmasters and postmistresses were wrongly accused of theft, fraud and false accounting due to a defective IT system.
Toby said: “I am proud to be a part of this shocking, unsettling but ultimately inspirational drama.”
Alan said: “This is one of the most egregious scandals the country has ever seen and a major corporation has managed to keep it covered up for years.
“Thankfully this has now been exposed and the victims are finally on their way to finding the justice they deserve.”
Shaun Dooley, Amit Shah, Alex Jennings, Ian Hart, Lia Williams, Clare Calbraith, and Adam James will also star in the drama, which has been written by screenwriter Gwyneth Hughes.
Executive Producer Natasha Bondy said: “Despite this being a scandal that is now widely regarded as the biggest miscarriage of justice in our country’s legal history, it’s still a story that many people don’t know about. We hope this series changes that.”
ITV Commissioning Editor Helen Perry said: “We are so grateful to the extraordinary cast that have come together for this show.
“Their talent will help shine a spotlight on one of the most important and unbelievable stories of injustice in recent British history.”
Some of the wronged workers ended up being imprisoned for crimes they never committed, ruining their lives.
However, following the landmark Court of Appeal decision to overturn their criminal convictions, dozens of former sub postmasters and postmistresses have been exonerated on all counts as they battled to finally clear their names.
They fought for more than 10 years to finally prove their innocence.
The drama will tell the story of how in 2009, a group of sub postmasters from across the UK formed the Justice For Subpostmasters Alliance.

Frankie Sims ‘had to do a lot of explaining’ to her parents about filming an OnlyFans reality show

OHMYGOSSIP — Frankie Sims “had to do a lot of explaining” to her parents about filming a reality show for OnlyFans.
The ex ‘The Only Way is Essex’ star is on a mission to clear up the misconception that the website, which allows people to share content for a monthly subscription free, is not just for “raunchy” material as she prepares to drop her family’s new show, ‘The House of Sims’, in which she takes Hollywood with her siblings, Chloe, Demi and Charlie.
The 28-year-old reality television personality told Heat magazine: “People were really confused about the concept. We’ve had to do a lot of explaining at the beginning and to our parents!
“There’s a taboo around OnlyFans, but people are starting to understand the streaming platform is completely different to the app. The app is used for other things – fitness, cooking and workouts – but all anybody talks about about is the raunchy content that gets posted.
“OnlyFans do have a bit of a thing they’re labelled with, but we’re hoping to change that.”
Frankie detailed how she moved Stateside with dreams of “falling in love” with an American man, but she might have found what she wants when she returned to the UK.
She said: “I didn’t date for a year. When I knew the show was coming up, I had my heart set on going to America, meeting an American man, falling in love and getting married.
“I actually do follow that on the show – I meet up with a matchmaker and she sets me up with somebody but it doesn’t work out.
“I’ve been single so for long, so I was disappointed. I came back to England last month and I was here for two days and I met somebody from London. So, now I’m in a bit of a pickle, because I’ve spent every day with them for the past month. I’m like, ‘How does this happen?’ ”
Frankie has extended an invitation to him to go to America with her, and it would be “exciting” if he accepted.
She said: “I’m going back in June, and I’ve invited him. It’ll be exciting if he does come.”

Stephen Tompkinson breaks silence on trial after not guilty verdict

OHMYGOSSIP — Stephen Tompkinson has broken his silence on his grievous bodily harm trial, and believes it should’ve been “investigated a lot sooner”.
The 57-year-old actor was found not guilty of causing GBH last week after he was accused of punching a drunken man outside his home in Whitley Bay, north-east England, in May 2021.
Karl Poole had alleged that Stephen’s actions caused him to fall and fracture his skull, which the ‘DCI Banks’ star denied.
Stephen has now told how he thought it could’ve been “dealt with there and then” rather than two years later.
Speaking on ‘Lorraine’, he said: “I thought myself it could’ve been investigated a lot sooner and dealt with there and then, rather than waiting two years.”
During his conversation with host Lorraine Kelly on Friday (19.05.23), Stephen admitted the case “had to be answered”, but he also questioned whether it was worth bringing after deliberations took “less than an hour”.
When asked how long it took to throw out his case, he said: “Less than an hour. You have to wonder, was it worth bringing it in in the first place.
“They were trying to prove a punch that never happened, there was no physical evidence on my hand or the guy’s face, he was just incredibly drunk and he fell.”
When the verdict was announced at Newcastle Crown Court last week, he nodded but showed no visible emotion.
As he left the court, he told reporters at the time: “I just want to go home.”
During the trial, the star insisted he wasn’t responsible for Poole’s injuries.
He said: “I didn’t apply any excessive force that would have caused any sober person to fall over … I am not responsible for Karl Poole’s double skull fracture.
“He went off due to his own instability. He fell in a completely different direction.”

Rob Marshall slams ‘archaic’ response to Halle Bailey’s casting in The Little Mermaid

OHMYGOSSIP — Rob Marshall has hit out at the “archaic” backlash to Halle Bailey’s casting in ‘The Little Mermaid’.
The 62-year-old director’s decision to cast the Chloe x Halle star as Ariel in the live-action remake of the Disney classic was met with a negative response because of Halle’s skin colour but Rob cannot understand the anger.
Speaking to Deadline, he said: “I didn’t think it was that big a deal, casting a woman of colour. I thought, that’s an archaic way to see the world.
“When that controversy arose, from narrow-minded people, I thought, wow, that really feels like it’s coming from another century. Are we really still there?”
However, Rob is proud that the casting will leave an impression on young girls and boys of colour.
The ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ director said: “But the bonus that came with this casting, and I wasn’t aware of it at the time, is seeing these young girls of colour and young boys of colour looking at her and thinking, wow, I’m represented. It was very, very moving to me.”
The live-action picture required a lot of technical work but Rob was determined to ensure that emotion was at the centre of the story.
He explained: “As technically challenging as this film was… it was the most challenging of my career and I certainly couldn’t have done it without having done all the films I’d done to date… I really didn’t want the technical aspect of the film to lead it.
“I didn’t want people to see that. I wanted to make it feel seamless. So the most important thing is the emotion, the story, the characters, the acting. That had to lead the film so that you’re invested in it.
“Otherwise, who cares, because it would be a technical exercise.”

Jason Momoa is glad that Fast X resisted showdown temptation

OHMYGOSSIP — Jason Momoa is pleased that ‘Fast X’ withheld a dramatic showdown between himself and Vin Diesel.
The 43-year-old actor plays sadistic villain Dante Reyes in the new ‘Fast and Furious’ movie and is pleased that film bosses held back on a confrontation between Dante and Vin’s character Dominic Toretto.
Jason told Screen Rant: “We had a big fight scene planned for me and (Dom), and we’ve seen that we’ve done that. They don’t need to get into the showdown of fighting each other.
“He constantly has the upper hand on Dom. And it’s not true that we don’t want to see them fight because that showdown’s going to come and that’ll be violent, especially with someone who just adores pain and is probably already dead inside.
“It’s scary when someone’s getting off on that pain. I wanted that to be there and, through that, his humour.”
Momoa also delved into Dante’s backstory and his motivation to destroy Dominic Toretto.
The ‘Aquaman’ star said: “You come from a crime family. My father was taken from me and then everything was taken from me. Not only that, but all our money. He was left to fend for himself in Brazil.
“He just spent a good part of his life obsessing about Dom and having that revenge, so someone who’s had everything taken from them just wanted to hurt him in the worst way and take away that legacy of his. Obviously, it’s his child and to break his family apart.”
Jason added: “I feel like if you studied someone that much, you actually want to be them. You love them, and you want to wear their skin and become that. You just kind of play it that way and, emotionally, anything can come out. It can be funny; it can be sexy; it can be scary. But at the root of it, I’m going to wear your skin.”

Ben Elton rules out Blackadder reboot

OHMYGOSSIP — Ben Elton has ruled out a ‘Blackadder’ reboot.
The ex ‘Friday Night Live’ host and co-creator of the iconic BBC comedy series has axed hopes of a revival as nothing has topped its original run.
The 64-year-old comedian told the Daily Star newspaper: “‘Blackadder’ isn’t coming back.
“We’re all still very good friends, all of us, genuinely, and I think one of the reasons for that is because we don’t do a ‘Blackadder’.
There’s been a couple of half-a**** bits and pieces of revivals and I think they’re all pretty s*** to be honest so I don’t think so.”
Ben admitted himself, co-creator Richard Curtis, and cast members Rowan Atkinson, Sir Tony Robinson, Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry – never envisaged the programme being so popular.
He said: “We did something surprisingly special; nobody has the slightest idea that it would resonate in the way it did.
“Of course, you can’t you can’t plan for any of your successes or failure, I certainly didn’t plan for any of my failures but they come all the same.
“And I think it’s best to leave it where it was you know were all a lot older and doing a lot of other things and you know it’s hard to get Ryan out of the house you know it takes a long time to make any decision.”
The programme’s 40th anniversary will be marked on UKTV Gold with talking heads speaking about their experience.
Tony – who played loveable fool Baldrick – said: “Blackadder holds a special place in the nation’s heart and in mine too. I’m delighted to be part of its 40th Birthday celebrations on Gold. It’s been wonderful to journey back to where it all began and chat to some of the biggest names in comedy who made it all happen.”

Cynthia Erivo to star in Prima Facie film adaptation

OHMYGOSSIP — Cynthia Erivo is to star in a film adaptation of ‘Prima Facie’.
The 36-year-old actress has been cast as Tessa in the big-screen adaptation of Suzie Miller’s one-woman play.
Jodie Comer won an Olivier Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Tessa in London’s West End and is currently starring in the production on Broadway.
‘Prima Facie’ tells the story of Tessa – a confident young lawyer who prides herself in successfully defending individuals who have been accused of sexual assault.
However, her view of the legal system changes after she is sexually assaulted by a colleague and has to go through the court process herself.
The film version will be directed by BAFTA-winning filmmaker Susanna White with Miller adapting the screenplay for the film.
Erivo will serve as an executive producer on the picture with producers Participant and Bunya Productions.
She said: “I am thrilled to be joining Suzie, Susanna, Participant, Bunya and the rest of the team on this journey with ‘Prima Facie’. Tessa’s experience sheds such vulnerable light on the complex conversations around consent and sexual abuse and the law that surrounds it, which is all too relatable for so many and timely for all.
“Jodie Comer’s powerhouse exploration of the struggle on Broadway is nothing short of beautiful and heart-wrenching. When I read this script I knew it was important work to do. I look forward to getting to know who Tessa is to me as ‘Prima Facie’ goes from stage to screen.”
Miller said: “I am thrilled to have the brilliant Cynthia Erivo join this incredible team; she is a highly talented and nuanced actor who will create a bold and dynamic Tessa for the screen.”

Andy Serkis would return for new Lord of the Rings movies

OHMYGOSSIP — Andy Serkis is open to returning in the new ‘Lord of the Rings’ films.
The 59-year-old star voiced Gollum in the original fantasy trilogy and is willing to reprise the part for the “multiple” new movies that are in the works at Warner Bros.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Andy said: “I adore those guys and they are a second family to me.
“I’ve spent so many years making films with them. I love their sensibility and their take; it’s filmmaking on a different kind of level. You live and breathe it. And so, yes, if some opportunity were to come up, it would be an amazing thing.”
Warner Bros. co-chairs and CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy revealed last year that they are “honoured” to be working on the new projects based on J.R.R Tolkien’s books as they believe that the author’s universe “remains largely unexplored” on the big screen.
They said in a statement: “Twenty years ago, New Line took an unprecedented leap of faith to realise the incredible stories, characters and world of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ on the big screen.
“The result was a landmark series of films that have been embraced by generations of fans.
“But for all the scope and detail lovingly packed into the two trilogies, the vast, complex and dazzling universe dreamed up by J.R.R. Tolkien remains largely unexplored on film.
“The opportunity to invite fans deeper into the cinematic world of Middle-earth is an honour, and we are excited to partner with Middle-earth Enterprises and Embracer on this adventure.”
Elijah Wood starred in the franchise as Frodo Baggins and admits that he has concerns about the new films and hopes that those making them have a passion for Tolkien’s work.
He told GQ: “I’m fascinated and I’m excited. I hope it’s good. I’m surprised—I don’t know why I’m surprised because, of course there would be more movies. Obviously at the core of that, is a desire to make a lot of money. It’s not that a bunch of executives are like, ‘Let’s make really awesome art.’ And, again, not begrudging anybody because, of course, it is commerce. But great art can come from commerce. So those two things are not mutually exclusive.”

Danny Dyer hints his EastEnders journey isn’t over yet

OHMYGOSSIP — Danny Dyer has hinted he could return to ‘EastEnders’.
The ‘Scared of the Dark’ host doesn’t “regret” saying goodbye to his longtime role of Mick Carter in the BBC One soap, but he suggested that despite his alter-ego’s death, he could return to Albert Square.
The 45-year-old actor told the Radio Times magazine: “I don’t regret leaving, but it was really emotional for me.
“Mick’s exit felt like a real ‘full stop’, but maybe it was a ‘dot, dot, dot’.”
Danny’s character is survived by his onscreen ex-wife Linda (Kellie Bright), who is struggling to come to terms with the death of her former spouse and also trying to keep the Queen Vic boozer – her family’s home, which she ran with him – after his jailed wife Janine Butcher got Mick’s share after his death.
And the new co-owner was recently revealed to be Linda’s mother, Elaine Peacock (Harriet Thorpe), after Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) and Nish (Navin Chowdhry) and Suki (Balvinder Sopal) were misled.
Announcing his exit last year, Danny said: “The big news is I’ve decided not to renew my contract. That’s all. That’s not because I’ve fallen out with anybody, I love everybody.
“I am leaving EastEnders. I’m very lucky, I’m very grateful.
“When you’re in a job like a soap your contract comes up for renewal, and every time it has, they’ve asked me to stay, and I’m very grateful for that. Because I’ve seen a lot of people come and go. It’s very tough.”
Meanwhile, the ‘Vendetta’ star recently spoke about how “intrigued” he was to travel to Australia to shoot the new film ‘Heat’ alongside the rest of the cast, including ‘Neighbours’ stars Olympia Valance and Richie Morris.
Danny told The Sun newspaper: “I can’t wait to get amongst this beautiful piece of work in Australia. I’ve always been intrigued about working there.
“It’s my first gig since ‘EastEnders’. Heat has a powerful, dark script and strong Australian cast and crew. Let’s have it!”

The BAFTA-Award winning star previously worked with the Italian restaurant chain on the Big Zuu’s Zillionaire Rustica pizza last year and he was delighted to be asked to craft something sweeter this time round, coming up with the Big Zuu Big Apple Cal’ZUU’ne.

The chef’s dessert is a sweet, Calzone-style folded pizza crammed with cinnamon spiced apple, caramel and marscapone, topped with vanilla gelato, honeycomb, toffee popcorn and salted caramel sauce.
Big Zuu’s culinary creation has already proved to be a hit with diners, with the likes of AJ Tracey, Katya Jones, Laura Anderson and Woody Cook tucking into the sweet treat at a special launch party at Zizzi, The Strand, in London last month.

The 30-year-old actress – who is best known for playing Sinead O’Connor on ‘Hollyoaks’ – has been cast as Courtney Vance, the glamorous wife of Darren, one of Dev Alahan’s business associates.
Stephanie – who left ‘Hollyoaks’ in 2019 – said in a statement: “I am absolutely delighted to be joining the cast of ‘Coronation Street’, playing the part of Courtney Vance.
“Growing up I have always watched and loved the show, so to be part of the biggest TV soap in Britain, which is in the hearts and homes of so many people, is an honour.”
Stephanie is being joined on the set by Ryan Early, who has been cast in the role of Darren Vance.
The actor has also revealed that he’s a long-time fan of the ITV soap.
He said: “I am so thrilled to be playing Darren Vance on ‘Coronation Street’ and joining the most iconic soap. I grew up watching the show with my grandmother so to walk on the cobbles is such an honour.”
Stephanie and Ryan start filming this week and will make their ‘Coronation Street’ debuts in July.
‘Coronation Street’ producer Iain MacLeod has already promised viewers that the new recruits will be at the centre of a “fun, fiery storyline”.
Looking forward to the summer, Iain shared: “In Stephanie and Ryan, we have cast two fantastic actors as the catalyst for this fun, fiery storyline.
“Aadi will quickly find himself way out of his depth as he risks everything for Courtney. And while it is the best time he’s ever had in his life, he stands to end up in a whole heap of trouble!”

Cliffhanger 2 won’t be a remake, says Ric Roman Waugh

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Cliffhanger 2’ won’t be a “remake” of the original movie.
Ric Roman Waugh is set to helm the follow-up to the 1993 action movie and he’s insisted that he’s “not interested in remakes”.
He told Collider: “It was a little bit of a dogfight of like, ‘What do you call it?’ And I was like, ‘What you call it is, I don’t wanna make a remake.’ I’m not interested in remakes.
“I think that what cable television has done for us is, it’s made us, as an audience, embrace serial storylines even more, where we really get to create storylines that we can carry forward and into multiple chapters.”
Sylvester Stallone is returning to star in the upcoming movie.
Ric is hopeful of replicating the success of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, which introduced a number of new characters while also showing respect to the original movie.
He explained: “‘Top Gun: Maverick’ was just a brilliant execution of nostalgia from the original movie, carrying that stuff forward, giving us a new identity.
“We are gonna be doing a very similar thing with ‘Cliffhanger’, but what I think also makes this unique is, this guy named Sylvester Stallone, who’s created some of the most iconic characters of all time, but he’s also been really gracious in passing the torch.”
Stallone will reprise the role of mountain climber Gabe Walker for the upcoming movie, and Ric previously revealed that he’s looking forward to working with the Hollywood icon.
He said in a statement: “Growing up with the biggest action films of the 80s and 90s, working on many of them myself, ‘Cliffhanger’ was by far one of my favourite spectacles. To be at the helm of the next chapter, scaling the Italian Alps with the legend himself, Sylvester Stallone, is a dream come true.”

I’m done with The Terminator, says Arnold Schwarzenegger

OHMYGOSSIP — Arnold Schwarzenegger is “done” with the ‘Terminator’ franchise.
The 75-year-old actor thinks the franchise could have a successful future – but Schwarzenegger insists that he won’t be a part of it.
Schwarzenegger – who starred in 2019’s ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’ – told The Hollywood Reporter: “The franchise is not done. I’m done.
“I got the message loud and clear that the world wants to move on with a different theme when it comes to ‘The Terminator’. Someone has to come up with a great idea.”
Despite this, Schwarzenegger will always have fond memories of the franchise.
The actor – who starred in the original ‘Terminator’ movie in 1984 – explained: “‘The Terminator’ was largely responsible for my success, so I always would look at it very fondly.
“The first three movies were great. Number four [‘Salvation’] I was not in because I was governor [of California]. Then five [‘Genisys’] and six [‘Dark Fate’] didn’t close the deal as far as I’m concerned. We knew that ahead of time because they were just not well written.”
Meanwhile, Schwarzenegger has also revealed that he remains open to making a ‘Conan’ sequel.
The actor made his Hollywood breakthrough in 1982 with ‘Conan the Barbarian’, and Schwarzenegger is keen to reprise the role.
He shared: “It’s been pending for the last ten years.
“[Fredrik] Malmberg owns the rights. He comes to me and says, ‘Oh, I have a deal with Netflix’ and when we ask Netflix, they don’t know anything about it. It’s one of those crazy things. I hope he figures it out.
“I think you do it like ‘Unforgiven’, where you play the age.
“There’s a great script out there that John Milius wrote, and others have written one. The story is there. There are directors who want to do it. But he has the rights, and until he sells the rights for one or two movies, or for the franchise, there’s nothing you can do about it.”
