Claudia Winkleman’s The Piano coming back for a 2nd season

OHMYGOSSIP — Claudia Winkleman’s ‘The Piano’ has been renewed for a second season.
The ‘Traitors’ presenter, 51, is to lead another series and a Christmas special of the heartwarming Channel 4 reality show, which sees train passengers take their turn of playing the instrument in train stations up and down the country.
Ian Katz, the network’s chief creative officer, told The Sun newspaper’s TV Biz column: “In a world full of wannabes seeking their moment in the limelight, The Piano was a breath of fresh air.
“It celebrated ordinary people doing something extraordinary for the sheer love of it.
“From 94-year-old widower George who played in Glasgow station to Lucy, the blind 13-year-old who stole the nation’s hearts.”
The show features judges pop singer Mika, 39, and classical pianist Lang Lang, 41, who both enthused about the programme and how it “touches hearts”.
Lang Lang told The Guardian newspaper: “TV has never really had a piano competition accessible to everyone.
“We’ve had professional contests or series for vocalists but never just piano. This instrument really is for everybody. Piano connects people, it touches hearts. This is the sort of show I’ve always wanted to do.”
The ‘Spring Wind’ star noted that the setting of busy railway hubs as opposed to stuffy concert halls added a “much more casual and spontaneous” vibe to the impromptu performances.
Lang Lang said: “I’m pretty sure more people will be interested in playing piano after this show. It shows the sheer joy of music, no matter who you are.”
‘Grace Kelly’ hitmaker Mika enthused about the format’s “honesty” compared to other talent show he has been a part of like the Italian edition of ‘The X Factor’ and the French version ‘The Voice’.
Mika added: “They wear their heart on their sleeve in a way professionals just aren’t able to do.”

She told the magazine The Line of Best Fit: “We clicked straight away … And, you know, his mother also survived breast cancer. We just really connected on our families and our work ethic.
“It was like there was no one else at the party, and then it was like, ‘Oh my gosh, the sun’s coming up. What’s going on?’ We remained really good friends, but I had butterflies – it was a surprise, but I felt comfortable. Safe.”
The ‘Praising You’ hitmaker gushed about how working professionally alongside Taika – who has kids Te, 11, and Matewa, seven, with his ex wife Chelsea Winstanley – is the “easiest thing ever” because they are “both fire signs”.
Rita said: “I love him in all aspects of the word … But, you know, I really respect him and admire what he does and how he has created his own style. Matt Damon lauds Christopher Nolan for making ‘morally complex’ Oppenheimer

OHMYGOSSIP — Matt Damon has praised Christopher Nolan for taking on a “morally complex” film with ‘Oppenheimer’.
The 52-year-old star plays US Army Lieutenant General Leslie Groves in the new movie about J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) – the physicist behind the atomic bomb – and praised the filmmaker for taking on such an emotive historical subject matter.
Speaking at the movie’s UK premiere in London on Thursday (13.07.23), Matt said: “I think everybody wants to see Chris’s movies anyway. I felt like ‘Dunkirk’ was devastating in many ways and I was the first in line to see it.
“I think it’s great that he’s covering something that is so morally complex and important to all of our history as something like this.”
Matt – who walked out of the premiere with co-stars Murphy and Emily Blunt due to the announcement of the SAG-AFTRA strike – had previously collaborated with the director on the 2014 flick ‘Interstellar’ and hailed Nolan for his “perfect process” of putting a blockbuster together.
The ‘Invictus’ star said: “He’s just such a badass. I don’t want to say he gets better because I feel like he’s been at the top for a really long time. If anything I guess he’s refining what was already a perfect process. He’s just really something else.
“I just wanna be in the stable. I’ll do anything, big, small, whatever he wants. I hope I get a call again. It’s just the best place to work there is.”

‘I’ve loved every minute’: Cillian Murphy takes centre stage in Oppenheimer

OHMYGOSSIP — Cillian Murphy “loved every minute” of being the leading man in ‘Oppenheimer’.
The 47-year-old actor finally takes centre stage in Christopher Nolan’s new blockbuster as J. Robert Oppenheimer – the father of the atomic bomb – and relished his latest collaboration with the acclaimed director.
Speaking at the movie’s UK premiere in London on Thursday (13.07.23) – which he and fellow cast members left early following the announcement of the SAG-AFTRA strike – Cillian said: “I’ve loved every minute of it. It’s a dream job to work with all these astonishingly talented actors, the best actors in the world.
“Myself and Chris have been working together for 20 years now and it feels like we were working towards this point the whole time.”
Cillian has worked with Nolan on movies such as ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘Inception’ but considers the director’s latest picture – which also features stars such as Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh and Robert Downey Jr. – to be his most accomplished work yet.
Asked how the filmmaker’s style has changed, the ‘Peaky Blinders’ actor said: “I think he’s just focusing on refining his vision the whole time, I think this might be his magnum opus.
“I’ll be there for any part he wants, you know sword carrier or whatever, I’ll be there.”
The much-anticipated film’s powerful subject matter has provoked strong reactions from those who have seen the movie and Cillian believes that the project contains everything that an audience wants on the big screen.
He said: “People are devastated, people are overwhelmed. People want to see it two or three times. People are moved, it’s all of the things that you want from cinema really.”

Catherine Tate starring in a new West End play

OHMYGOSSIP — Catherine Tate has landed a new West End role in play ‘The Enfield Haunting’.
The ‘Queen of Oz’ star is “thrilled” to be treading the boards in the production – which is directed by Angus Jackson at London’s Ambassadors Theatre – as single mother Peggy Hodgson, who attempts to save her three children from a poltergeist.
Catherine will appear alongside David Threlfall, 69, who is playing Maurice Grosse, an out-of-his-depth ghosthunter.
The 53-year-old actress said: “I’m thrilled to be part of ‘The Enfield Haunting’ and can’t wait to start working with the first-class creative team and the brilliant David Threlfall.”
The play – which will have a limited London run before transferring to Brighton – is based on a real-life testimony from ghost hunters, heard by the writer Paul Unwin about the spirit hunting that took place in the North London suburb in 1977.
The 65-year-old playwright said: “Before Guy Lyon Playfair, the poltergeist expert, died in 2018, I spent a long afternoon with him in his basement flat in Earls Court.
“He and Maurice Grosse had spent months with the Hodgson family trying to protect them, but also make sense of what was going on. What Guy told me was terrifying. So much of what appears to have happened was impossible to fake and yet at the centre of the whole thing were real people trying to make sense of their lives.”
Catherine previously deemed it “just rude” that Netflix didn’t tell her that her mockumentary ‘Hard Cell’ had been cancelled last month.
She told Zoe Ball, 52, on her BBC Radio 2 show: “I believe … well, do you know Netflix never actually told me? So I’ve never actually had the call to say … nothing.
“Isn’t it just rude? I heard from someone else’s agent. That was nice.”

‘Thank you, Sarah Lancashire’: Jamie Lee Curtis is a huge Happy Valley fan

OHMYGOSSIP — Jamie Lee Curtis is a big fan of BBC drama ‘Happy Valley’.
The Academy Award-winning actress has heaped praise on Sarah Lancashire and the show’s creator and writer Sally Wainwright for their “gorgeous portrait” of an “amazing woman” in former ‘Coronation Street’ star Sarah’s character Sergeant Catherine Cawood.
She wrote on Twitter: “Just finished @happyvalleybbc THANK YOU @SarahLancsUK @sallywainwrigh8 for a gorgeous portrait of an amazing woman.”
The BBC One drama finished after three series over nine years in February, with 7.5 million fans tuning in to see Catherine and villain Tommy Lee Royce’s final showdown.
The show has proved so popular in the UK, it is to be taught as part of a university TV writing course.
Professor Ann Marie Di Mambro from Glasgow’s Caledonian University is planning to use Sally’s show in lectures for the MA in TV Fiction Writing course, as she says it broke so many rules of television script writing.
She previously told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “It’s the perfect marriage of brilliant perfect casting. It’s so deeply, deeply emotional. It’s raw from start to finish.
“It goes against a lot of what we teach – that’s what is so wonderful about it. The penultimate episode ends with a phone call between two people (Tommy Lee Royce and son Ryan.)
“You tend to teach people not to over-write the dialogue. Phone calls can be quite dull.
“Don’t have scenes that are too long, but because it’s so unique and so original (it works.)
“I would imagine that it’s written from the heart and these are characters that the writer really believes in, who are so flawed.”

‘I was finally given the trust and the platform’: Hayley Atwell praised Tom Cruise for taking a chance on her

OHMYGOSSIP — Hayley Atwell is “eternally grateful” to Tom Cruise and Christopher ‘McQ’ McQuarrie for bringing her into the ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise.
The 41-year-old actress plays master thief, Grace, in ‘Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One’ and Hayley relished the opportunity to show off her skills.
She told The Hollywood Reporter: “I was finally given the trust and the platform … to show more range and to show more emotional depth in a franchise or something of this size, which I hadn’t been afforded before. And so I have this eternal gratitude to Tom and to McQ, who provided the resources and the support system every day on set so that I could thrive. It’s been a deliverance of a long time coming. After 17 years in this industry, I’ve finally been able to do something at this level, with this quality of filmmaking, and I’d never been afforded that before.”
And, Hayley has many memorable moments from the shoot, including one car chase with Tom handcuffed to her.
She said: “There’s about 20 minutes of footage of us [drifting] over and over again. And then Tom led a round of applause from the crew, and McQ said, ‘Tom put his life in your hands just then and he wouldn’t have allowed you to do that had he not believed that you could look after him, too.’ So they’re never short on their praise for when actors come in and deliver for them. That’s a moment I’ll never forget.”

Ariana Grande’s Wicked halts filming due to SAG-AFTRA strike

OHMYGOSSIP — Ariana Grande has been forced to stop filming ‘Wicked’, due to the actors’ strike.
Although the 30-year-old pop-star is just days away from finishing filming on Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the musical, she is among the thousands of actors who have downed tools after their union Screen Actors Guild, voted to strike.
The strike comes after the union tried and failed to reach a deal over residuals from streaming services and an agreement that artificial intelligence wouldn’t replace actors.
SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher has said that the actors guild is ready for a long strike.
She said: “Right now, we discussed what it would cost if it went for six months, so we’re looking for the long haul. The gravity of a commitment like this is not lost on any of us. It’s major. But we also see that we have no future and no livelihood unless we take this action, unfortunately.”
Earlier this week, the cast of Oppenheimer left their London premiere early to “go and write their picket signs” in preparation for the strike by the actors’ union.
Cillian Murphy, Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt and Ramy Malek all walked out of the premiere with director Christopher Nolan revealing their reasons.
He told the audience: “You’ve seen them here earlier on the red carpet.
“Unfortunately, they’re off to write their picket signs for what we believe to be an imminent strike by SAG, joining one of my guilds, the Writers Guild, in the struggle for fair wages for working members of the unions, and we support them.”

Five Nights At Freddy’s is just the start, Jason Blum plans to bring more games to the big screen

OHMYGOSSIP — James Wan and Jason Blum want to make a series of movies based on video games.
The ‘Insidious’ director is a “big gamer” and with the merger of his company Atomic Monster with Jason’s Blumhouse Productions imminent their intention is to bring numerous console and PC titles to the big screen.
Horror game ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ is their first adaptation and it is being released in October 2023.
In an interview with website DiscussingFilm, Blum, 54, said: “Well, I think the right video games make great source material for movies. I mean, you saw that even with [‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’]. It’s a different genre, but it was an amazingly successful movie. And I certainly hope that’s the case [with ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’]. James is actually a big gamer and we have a games division of our company that we’ve been working on. I’m definitely looking forward to finding more games that are popular and that we could turn into horror movie.”
Blum insists that the merger of the two production companies is great news for horror fans because they will be able to release more movies more frequently.
He said: “For the fans, I think the good news is, instead of one movie every couple of years, it’ll be [new movies] every year. “Some movies will be more Atomic Monster, some movies will be more Blumhouse. But both of the company’s DNA will be in all of our movies. I think that will, ultimately, make for better movies for the fans and more of them.”
In the joint interview, Wan – who created ‘The Conjuring’ and ‘Insidious’ franchises – added: “I agree with that. You know, the fact that we can kind of help each other out on our separate projects and still come together on the ones that we’re working on together is what makes this a very interesting and unique sort of collaboration.”

Claire Sweeney: Brookside should never have been axed!

OHMYGOSSIP — Claire Sweeney thinks ‘Brookside’ should still be on air.
The 52-year-old actress shot to fame in 1991 when she took on the role of Lindsey Corkill in the now-defunct Channel 4 soap – which was noted for its hard-hitting depictions of rape, murder and was the first programme to show a lesbian kiss before the watershed – and admitted that she has no idea what happened that led to its demise in 2003.
Speaking on ITV’s ‘Lorraine’, she said: “I don’t think it should ever have been axed because it was so gritty. I don’t know what happened, it was a shame, such a shame. And ‘Hollyoaks’ kind of took over that place really and that went a lot more gritty. I don’t know if it would come back but there’s certainly an audience for it because when they showed the reuns on STV, it was the highest-rating shows.”
Meanwhile, the former ‘Loose Women’ panelist – who since coming runner up on the first series of ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ in 2001 has carved out a successful musical career with roles in West End hits like ‘Chicago’ and ‘9 to 5’ – has now joined the cast of ‘Coronation Street’ as the long-lost mother of established character Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) and explained that when she got the call to tell her she had won the part of Cassie Plummer, it was a case of history repeating itself from when she got her big break on ‘Brookside’ because she was informed on her birthday.
However, she was “sworn to secrecy” over her new role and often has to be “careful” what she tells her young son Jaxon – who she has with ex-partner Daniel Reilly – in case he blurts the news out.
She said: “I think everything happens at the right time for the right reason and it just takes that one person to believe in you and take a chance, and that was Ian McLeod. I got offered ‘Brookside’ on my 19th birthday, 17 April, and then I got offered ‘Corrie’ on my birthday, 52, this year. And I couldn’t tell anyone!
“So I was sat on the balcony, I was on holiday with my mum and Jaxon and I got the phone call was sworn to secrecy. And I had all my mates phoning me and I wasn’t allowed to tell anyone! I told my mum of course. I’ve got to be careful what I tell Jaxon though because he’s got a big mouth! He’s eight and he doesn’t really understand when you have to keep quiet, he’s just announcing it to everyone!”
“He loves it but I just want him to be happy and he’s a bright kid so I want him to get a good education.”

Jamie Lee Curtis teases ‘wacky’ Borderlands movie

OHMYGOSSIP — Jamie Lee Curtis has promised a “wacky” ‘Borderlands’ film.
The 64-year-old actress will play Dr. Patricia Tannis in Eli Roth’s movie adaptation of the video game series and says that the picture – which also features Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart – is weird and wonderful.
Jamie told Entertainment Weekly: “That was filmed during Covid in Budapest, and I believe it is being released next year.
“It’s a little over-the-top, it’s pretty wacky, it’s fun.”
The ‘Halloween’ star’s alter ego is an erratic researcher and she confirmed that the character maintains some key elements from the video games.
Jamie explained: “She has autism. She’s a strange woman who has objectum sexuality, where she falls in love with inanimate objects.
“(She is) the character that knew Cate Blanchett’s character’s mother, which is why I’m in the movie. I am the connection back to Cate’s early past.”
Roth previously suggested that the flick would appeal to both newcomers and “hardcore gamers”.
The 51-year-old filmmaker told Collider: “You do not have to have played the game to enjoy the film.
“I wanted, you know, ‘Fifth Element’, ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’, something totally fun. Like with ‘Tomb Raider’ if you didn’t play the game you could still enjoy the movie. We’ve been able to craft a story with all kinds of Easter Eggs for hardcore gamers, but also a movie that’s accessible for fans.”
The director also expressed a desire to make more than just a “great video game adaptation”.
Eli said: He said: “We want to make a great science-fiction movie.
“We don’t just want to make a great video game adaptation. We want it to be a great sci-fi movie period… we want this to be a gateway drug for the non-Borderlands fans.
“The great thing about the game is there’s so much to it that you’re telling 80 hours of story and people can live in the world. We have to create a different experience that has to be thrilling in a different way and has all the things that the fans love.”

Christopher Nolan snubbed CGI use in Oppenheimer scenes

OHMYGOSSIP — Christopher Nolan refused to use CGI for scenes in ‘Oppenheimer’.
The 52-year-old director has helmed the new movie that stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist behind the nuclear bomb, and explained how he required “the bite of real-world imagery” to portray the danger of the weapon.
Speaking to Collider, Christopher said: “There are no CGI shots in this movie.
“I think computer graphics, they’re very versatile, they can do all kinds of things, but they tend to feel a bit safe. That’s why they’re difficult to use in horror movies. Animation tends to feel a little safe for the audience.”
The ‘Inception’ filmmaker continued: “The Trinity test, ultimately, but also these early imaginings of Oppenheimer visualising the Quantum Realm, they had to be threatening in some way. They had to have the bite of real-world imagery. The Trinity test, for those who were there, was the most beautiful and terrifying thing simultaneously, and that’s where we were headed for this film.”
Christopher also detailed the painstaking editing process that goes into his blockbusters.
He explained: “Structurally, the films tend to be fairly disciplined, and things transform over time. The approach Jen Lame, my editor, and myself take is to view the film as a whole.
“So we’re watching it every week. We’re putting it up, usually inviting one or two people in who don’t know anything about the script to watch it with us and see it through their eyes.”
Nolan added: “Every film presents unique challenges. There’s a feeling of confluence at the end. But every film is different.
“Some films are improved in the edit suite through tightening and speeding things up a lot, and that’s very often our process.”

She said:: “Janette has been amazing, she called me straight away, as soon as she found out. She was like “yes I am so happy it’s you.” You know I’ve worked with Jeanette on the tour, I’ve spent a lot of time with her. She’s amazing, she’s a powerhouse, the thing she said to me was – what I’ve got on my side, is experience of being on the show. So I can identify with all the celebs who are going through it this year! So perfect!”

She said: “I think for anyone doing ‘Strictly’, you need to be prepared that it is going to be the hardest thing you’re ever going to do! At first, I thought I was just going to glide along the ballroom dance floor. And no, it’s very, very difficult. But as soon as you accept the challenge, the glitz, the glamour, the sequins. It is all as fabulous as it seems on TV – and you will have the best time.”
