Luke Littler is set to be at the forefront of Sky Darts documentary

OHMYGOSSIP — Luke Littler is set to feature in a new Sky documentary about darts.
The 17-year-old sporting sensation, who shot to fame after making history at the 2024 PDC World Darts Championship by becoming the youngest player to reach the final aged 16, is being lined up to appear in the broadcaster’s two upcoming programmes about the biggest stars on the oche – simply titled ‘Darts’
A TV insider told The Sun newspaper’s TVBiz column: “Producers have a canny knack of knowing which way the wind is blowing and quickly catching that to maximise viewers.
“The rise in popularity of darts is a classic example, and Sky are keen to make the most of it with these two documentaries.
“Even though a date has yet to be confirmed for the first show, bosses are so sure that it will be a success, they have another one in the pipeline.”
Littler’s fame and the popularity of the sport soared in January when he reached the final of the prestigious competition after a fairytale run at the Alexandra Palace.
However, Luke Humphries snatched the crown from him and became world number one.
Meanwhile, the teenager has also signed up to be the celebrity player throwing for charity in the ITV reboot of the iconic gameshow ‘Bullseye’ that will air this Christmas.
The news comes after it was confirmed that former cricketer and ‘Top Gear’ host Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff is stepping into presenting duties, which were previously held by Jim Bowen during the show’s initial run between 1981 and 1995.
A source told The Sun: “Luke wasn’t even born when ‘Bullseye’ was on our screens with original host, Jim Bowen. But Luke knows this is a plum role to have landed.
“As he steps up to the ‘Bullseye’ oche he knows he’s following in the footsteps of legends including Eric Bristow and Jocky Wilson who all threw darts on the programme in its 80s heyday.”

Georgia Harrison reveals romance news two years on from fighting ex Stephen Bear in court

OHMYGOSSIP — Georgia Harrison has started dating again.
The 29-year-old reality star shortly became the victim of revenge porn last year and her ex-boyfriend Stephen Bear was later jailed for posting an explicit video of themselves online without her consent but she has now revealed that she has started seeing someone, although it just “early days” at the moment.
She told OK! Magazine: “I’m sort of seeing someone but it’s early days so I don’t want to say much. I’m seeing where it goes.”
The former ‘Love Island’ star waived her anonymity so she could publicly fight on behalf of other victims of revenge porn, and former ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ housemate Stephen, 34, was initially sentenced to 21 months behind bars for voyeurism, disclosing private, sexual photographs and films with intent to cause distress, and harassment without violence in January 2023.
He was released in January 2024 after serving just over 10 months of his sentence.
Meanwhile, Georgia recently enjoyed victory on ‘Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins’, when she and boxer Lani Daniels became the only recruits to pass the tough military-style course but she has made some lasting friendships following her time on the programme.
She said: “For sure, and it was amazing to watch them overcome their fears. There were some really empowering moments but hilarious ones, too. At times we’d be in fits of laughter thinking, “What are we doing with our lives?” Since the show, Bianca [Gascoigne] has become like a sister. I know we’ll always be close. Then, of course, Bobby [Norris], Marnie [Simpson] and Pete [Wicks]. We’ve all got a group chat.”
The former ‘TOWIE’ star also noted that any injuries she sustained have started to heal now, but did admit that she felt like she had been “hit by a bus” for a long time after filming finished.
She said: “They’ve healed now, but I felt like I’d been hit by a bus for a long time [laughs]. My feet were in a terrible state and carrying the 15kg weight around was tough. I’m more of a yoga or running girl. I dreaded getting an injury. I didn’t want to go full throttle and then have to leave.”

Bruce Jones speaks out after news that Les Battersby is being killed off: ‘They told me via email’

OHMYGOSSIP — Bruce Jones is “pleased but sad” his ‘Coronation Street’ character is being killed off.
The 71-year-old actor found fame as Les Battersby in the ITV soap opera and played the role from 1997 until 2007 but after bosses notified him via email that the character will die off-screen, he admitted that even though he is “sad” about the whole situation, it will also put a stop to members of the public constantly asking him when he is going back.
He told MailOnline: “[Show bosses] already emailed me a over a fortnight ago to tell me what was happening.
“I actually thought, well fine, I played him for ten years. It gives me closure. Maybe it will stop people asking me all the time when I’m going back, if I’m going back.
“People want me back, but it’ll stop all that, in shopping centres, wherever I go. I’m pleased it’s happening but I’m also sad about losing a character I played for ten years. I’m grateful to the street for that.
Bruce noted that he is still stopped multiple times a day by fans, but noted that the programme – which has been on air since 1960 – is “dead” in its current state.
He said: “I went out the other day and people asked four times that day, ‘when are you coming back? The street is dead.”
Throughout his time on the show, Les was famously married to Janice Battersby (Vicky Entwistle) and was father to Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) with her, as well as stepfather to Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor).
Their marriage came to an end in 2001 when it was revealed that Janice had been having an affair with Dennis Stringer (Charles Dean) in 2001 and he later tied the knot with Cilla Brown (Wendi Peters).
But Bruce was suspended from the show in May 2007 after reportedly getting drunk with an undercover journalist and it was later stated that the character had moved to Dublin.
And the actor thinks that the public reaction will be one of “real upset”, but noted that some fans seem to prefer watching the classic episodes on ITV2 rather than brand new ones and he has ultimately made peace with the broadcaster’s decision.
He said: “The reaction will be strange at first, once it breaks. It will be really strange to see how people react to it.
“I can imagine some people being really upset and annoyed, other people will be, ‘well you did your time, it was time to go, we’ve still got you on classic, so there are memories of you there, so that’s fine.
“I think a lot of people will be upset, a lot of people will be, ‘I’m not watching it again because I watch classic (the old episodes.” I’m just waiting for the reaction when it breaks, when I go shopping or to football with my mates. It’ll be a sad time for everyone. I don’t watch it.
“You get told, ‘I don’t watch it any more, we could do with you going back in’. But I’m not going back. He was a very popular person, Les. I can’t wait to see what the reaction I get, I can’t wait to see what reaction ‘Coronation Street’ gets.
“I wouldn’t mind betting they get a big reaction to it, but that’s the end of Les. I had a great time playing him. I’m going to move on and we’ll see what happens.”

Shaun Wallace fears losing his role on The Chase

OHMYGOSSIP — Shaun Wallace refuses to take his role on ‘The Chase’ for granted.
‘The Dark Destroyer’ has featured on the ITV teatime quiz show since it started back in 2009 but the barrister fears that he could end up being replaced if he stops being able to compete with fellow Chasers Anne Hegerty, Jenny Ryan, Darragh Ennis, Mark Labbett and Paul Sinha.
Shaun is quoted by The Sun newspaper’s TVBiz column as saying: “There’s never been a timeline for the show because you could be on the most successful series in the world and then it can go tomorrow.
“I’m only as good as my last speech as a lawyer, and as a Chaser, so never take anything for granted.
“I am the world’s first Chaser, so am comfortable. But if they don’t think I’m good enough, I’m not bigger than the show – end of story.”
Shaun previously explained that he “always plays to win” in episodes of ‘The Chase’ but will always go and see his opponents after filming no matter if he has won or lost.
The 64-year-old star told ITV’s ‘This Morning’: “As far as we’re concerned, we play to win. And my best victory is when I win by about a second and I love that.
“I will go and see the contestants afterwards whether they win or lose. I will always say if they’ve beat me then its fair play, but if they don’t then I’ll say, ‘You came here with nothing, you’ll leave with nothing!'”
Wallace also features on spin-off show ‘Beat the Chasers’ – in which all six brainboxes work as a team against members of the public – and explained that they always “win or lose” together even though others are “quicker” than him when it comes to answering questions.
He said: “Especially when we do ‘Beat the Chasers’, that’s the first time we get together, the team. Sometimes, we don’t get to see each other on a regular basis and it’s wonderful that we all come together as a formidable force. There are certain Chasers who are quicker than others, I’m like Timmy the tortoise with pressing the buzzer, but we win and we lose together.”

Paul Merson’s Strictly dreams

OHMYGOSSIP — Paul Merson is determined to fight for his place on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.
The 56-year-old former footballer revealed he has already shed two stone and while he knows he is not the best dancer in the competition, he will fight hard to remain on the show with professional dance partner Karen Hauer.
He told The Sun newspaper’s TV Biz column: “I’m 100 per cent in a relegation battle because the standards on this year’s show are through the roof. Some of the other dancers are just amazing.
“And now Toyah Willcox has gone, it will be hard for me and I am up against it. But I don’t look that far ahead. I live in the moment.
“I’m used to just putting my boots on and getting the job done. I won’t be big-headed but that was my job — I was good at football.”
And, Paul admitted he was pleasantly surprised to discover he has some dance skills.
The thrice-married sports star said: “That surprised me immensely. Honestly, I wasn’t exaggerating when I said I’d danced three times — once at each of my three weddings.
“I’ve improved a hundredfold. But that’s the whole idea of the show — people come on who have got two left feet and they try to get better and better.
“Also, my aim was to get well under 14st before I went out of Strictly, and I’m 14st right now — I haven’t been that light for 20 years.
“So when I was in the dance-off I was like, ‘I’m 14st 3lb — I need to stay!’ So it’s not about staying in to win, I just want to lose more weight.
“If I work hard this week I should get under 14st.”

Luca Guadagnino to direct new American Psycho film

OHMYGOSSIP — Luca Guadagnino will direct a new ‘American Psycho’ film.
The 53-year-old filmmaker is working on a new movie version of the Bret Easton Ellis novel, which was previously adapted for the big screen in 2000 with Christian Bale in the starring role.
Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson in a statement: “We are thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming slate. Luca is a brilliant artist, and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scott Z. Burns is working on the script for the new movie, which would not be a remake but is said to be a new take on the novel.
Frenesy Films will produce the movie, while Sam Pressman of Pressman Films — whose father, Edward R. Pressman, produced the 2000 movie — is executive producing the new version.
‘American Psycho’ tells the violent story of an image-obsessed investment banker who is also a serial killer.
Guadagnino’s most recent release is ‘Challengers’, starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Fast. ‘Queer’, starring Daniel Craig will be released next month and he is currently in postproduction on ‘After the Hunt’, with Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield.
Last year, Guadagnino was linked to a miniseries adaptation of Ellis’s recent novel ‘The Shards’ for HBO but he reportedly exited the project.

Olivia Bowen’s secret to a happy marriage

OHMYGOSSIP — Olivia Bowen believes the key to her successful marriage is making time for yourself.
The 30-year-old star met her husband Alex, 33, on ‘Love Island’ in 2016 and tied the knot in 2022 and Olivia believes their relationship has thrived because they both have their own interests.
She told MailOnline: “I think the secret is to have your own life. You need to be there for each other and support each other, but also have your own stuff, because that’s what you’re going to get enjoyment out of.
“‘You can’t rely on someone else to make you happy. You need to make sure you’re making yourself happy. Then if you’re happy, you’ll make the other person happy.
“We’ve had hard times, it’s been difficult at times , but we just enjoy each other’s company. We’re friends.”
The pair have son Abel, two, and Olivia revealed they want to expand their family.
She said: “We do want another child. It’s just a matter of when. If it happened now, we’d be happy, but we’re just letting it happen as it happens.
“It’s hard, though, because you get into the swing of it and then it’s like, ‘right, let’s add another one! Let’s blow it all up!’ But actually we would love to have a family of four.
“So if we’re lucky enough to conceive again, then yeah, it would be amazing.”

Leigh Francis insists Bo Selecta! reboot will never happen

OHMYGOSSIP — Leigh Francis has insisted a return for ‘Bo Selecta!’ will “never happen”.
The 51-year-old comic – who played celebrity-obsessed Avid Merrion in the sketch show from 2002 until 2009 – has insisted the controversial series has gone for good due to “society”, despite regular calls from fans for it to make a comeback.
Answering questions from fans on an Instagram Live, he said: “It’ll never happen. I guess that’s because of society, but it will 100% never happen. It’s a shame.”
And while Leigh admitted it was possible another of his creations, panel show ‘Celebrity Juice’ – which aired from 2008 to 2022 and he presented in his guise of Keith Lemon – could return to TV one day, he won’t be back as host.
He said: “Will ‘Celebrity Juice come back? It might do but it won’t with me.
“TV and comedy [are] exactly like fashion I think. It all comes back round.”
But the star isn’t disappearing from TV screens for good as he’s got other projects in development.
He said: “If the show I hope will happen happens, it will be early next year.”
Leigh previously claimed ‘Celebrity Juice’ was axed because “nothing is acceptable any more”.
He told The Sun newspaper: “Just as fashion and flared trousers have come back round however many times, comedy tastes change.
“Now, nothing is acceptable any more — we had ‘the rules were the rules’ in past times, and they’re different now, so of course there are things back then that you wouldn’t do any more.
“You don’t set out to offend anyone, you just set out to make people laugh, but for me, now when I come up with an idea, it has to be a straight one, with just a bit of silliness.
“Quite a lot of comedians are now presenting straight shows, entertainment programmes that are funny, just maybe not as funny as a sketch show.
“And I think it’s a shame for the viewers who still want to see the comedy stuff that we made back in the day, even when we’ve got to change with the playing field and stick to the rules of the time.”

Larry Lamb expects Gavin and Stacey to return after Christmas special

OHMYGOSSIP — Larry Lamb doubts that the ‘Gavin and Stacey’ Christmas special will be the end of the sitcom.
The beloved BBC comedy will return on Christmas Day (25.12.24) for what has been billed as the last-ever episode of the show but Larry – who plays the part of Mick Shipman – thinks that creators James Corden and Ruth Jones will be unable to resist the temptation to revive it as he likened them to ageing rock stars who keep going on tour.
Larry, 77, is quoted by the Daily Star newspaper as saying: “It’s like those old rock ‘n rollers who go round the world on their ‘last tour’.
“What are you going to do, kill it? What’s the point? They’re too canny, those two. We could be rocking this thing out when I’m about 104.”
Although he thinks the show could return, Larry recently described how filming the finale was “so emotional” and had extra poignancy as the “beautiful” closing scenes were shot during the last days of filming.
He told ‘Good Morning Britain’: “It was a trip down memory lane. Because suddenly there we are, and we’re facing the fact that effectively this is the end of this adventure – it’s the end of this journey and it was so emotional.
“On the last day of filming, we were filming the end of the story which is so unusual because nine times out of ten you find that you’re doing the end on the first day and you’re doing the beginning right at the end of it all.
“So what we were filming was the end of the story on the very last day and there was just this mental tick, tick, tick going on all the time and the emotions just kept building and building and building … [the ending] is just beautiful.”

Chris McCausland sprained wrist before Strictly Come Dancing last weekend

OHMYGOSSIP — Chris McCausland sprained his wrist before last weekend’s episode of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.
The 47-year-old comedian has been a hit with fans on the BBC programme but revealed that he was in the wars during rehearsals for last Saturday’s (12.10.24) show which resulted in him accidentally “dropping” professional partner Dianne Buswell.
Writing in his ‘Strictly’ diary for The Daily Telegraph newspaper, Chris said: “As sprains go, it was a mild one and I was deemed fit to dance by the ‘Strictly’ physio, but I needed to wear a wrist support.
“On the Thursday I did actually forget to put this wrist support on an ended up dropping poor Dianne in a rather unflattering heap on the floor. Sorry Dianne.”
Chris’ preparation was made even harder as he was suffering from a “stinking cold”, which he made clear to his dance partner.
The star – who is the first-ever blind contestant on the series – wrote: “Last week I had a cold, a horrible stinking cold.
“I mentioned this several times to Dianne. Some would call that moaning. Dianne would call that moaning. Dianne did call that moaning, but I would simply say that I was keeping her up-to-date with what my body was telling me – and my body was moaning.”
McCausland continued: “I was feeling particularly bunged up on Friday and Saturday, and I performed all of our run-throughs and the live show struggling to breathe through my nose.
“If you were watching and you thought that I needed to close my big flappy mouth, let me assure you that if I had done so, I would have suffocated halfway through and Dianne would have had to drag me through the rest of it by my one good wrist.”

Craig Revel Horwood welcomes new duty-of-care measures

OHMYGOSSIP — Craig Revel Horwood believes the ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ contestants are “very happy” to have chaperones.
The BBC introduced new duty-of-care measures for the current series, and Craig believes they’ve already had a positive impact on the show.
The 59-year-old TV star – who serves as a judge on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ – told ‘Good Morning Britain’: “It seems to be working.
“We have that in the theatre all the time – when I was in ‘Annie’ we always had chaperones.
“They’re always there to look after people if you’ve got a problem or if there’s something that doesn’t feel quite right, you can go to someone and there’s someone to witness and go through it all.
“I think it’s working really, really well.
“We’ve got a very happy company and they’re a lot of fun which people can tell when they watch it on the telly.”
Craig is the longest-serving member of the ‘Strictly’ judging panel, and he doesn’t have any intention of quitting the TV show anytime soon.
Speaking about his future plans, Craig shared: “I do want to stay.
“It’s the best Saturday ever, I love it. I get a front row seat to the best show ever. For me, it’s irreplaceable.”
Craig is loving the new series of ‘Strictly’, and he’s revealed who has impressed him so far.
He said: “I am loving the cast.
“I think Chris [McCausland] is fantastic – I absolutely love his sense of humour, he answers me back the most. He’s brilliant.
“Tasha [Ghouri] is fantastic, absolutely gorgeous dancer.
“There’s people coming up, namely a footballer darling. It didn’t start particularly well but Paul [Merson] has come through and treating it really seriously. It’s wonderful because it’s what the show is about.”

Brenda Edwards ‘appreciates every day’ after cancer scare

OHMYGOSSIP — Brenda Edwards learned to “appreciate every day” following her cancer scare.
The 55-year-old TV star was diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2015, and Brenda admits that the experience has changed her entire outlook on life.
Brenda – who has been cancer-free for nine years now – told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “Having cancer changes anybody, because you face a life of uncertainty, so it does make you appreciate life every day.
“I’m very grateful for what life brings me. I’ve always been a go-getter but now I’m even more so. If you don’t try, you’ll never know. You might succeed, so I’ll try almost anything.”
Brenda has also overhauled her diet since her health scare.
She said: “Since my cancer I researched what I should eat.
“I was eating a lot of processed foods and not a lot of veg, so spinach is my best friend. I love broccoli, salmon and chicken, and I try to stay away from sugars and white wine and be sensible. Now I drink gin and tonic, which was Queen Elizabeth’s drink.”
What’s more, Brenda believes she’s managed to strike a healthy balance between her work life and her personal life.
The TV star refutes the idea that she’s a “workaholic” – but insisted that she’s fully committed to her career, too.
Brenda – who has been a regular guest on the ‘Loose Women’ panel since 2019 – explained: “I’m not a workaholic but there’s no point in doing a job if you’re not going to do it properly.
“My whole family are like that. Yet you’ve got to know when to switch off, because all work and no fun makes you a very dull person.”

David Tennant loved smashing TV set for Rivals scene

OHMYGOSSIP — David Tennant found smashing a TV set for ‘Rivals’ to be “very therapeutic”.
The 53-year-old actor stars alongside the likes of Aidan Turner, Emily Atack and Danny Dyer in the new drama series, and David has revealed that he loved filming the scene in which his character smashed up a TV show set.
He told RadioTimes.com: “In some ways it’s very liberating, very therapeutic.”
On the other hand, David was conscious that he needed to get it right on the first take.
The actor – who is, perhaps, best-known for playing the tenth incarnation of the Doctor on ‘Doctor Who’ – explained: “In other ways, you’re very aware that you’ve got one take to not mess it up because there’s only one set and you’re only going to get one proper go at this. So, it’s a mixture.
“I think we did it last thing on a Friday so you were very aware that everyone wanted this to go well so they could all go home.”
‘Rivals’ has already been renewed for a second season.
The show is an adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s raunchy novel, and Dominic Treadwell-Collins has only reworked the first half of the book so far.
An insider told The Sun newspaper’s TVBiz column: “The feeling is that there is still so much more in the story that could easily be made into a sequel.
“Disney+ appear to be on board, even though they haven’t announced an official commission yet.
“Bosses at the streamer can see there is a huge amount of anticipation for this show, and having seen the episodes, they know it won’t disappoint.”

Dune director Denis Villeneuve ‘in the writing zone’ for Dune Three

OHMYGOSSIP — Denis Villeneuve has started work on a third ‘Dune’ movie.
The 57-year-old director helmed the 2021 sci-fi blockbuster and its sequel ‘Dune: Part Two’, and has now revealed he is currently immersed “deep” into novelist Frank Herbert’s space fantasy universe as he continues to work on the third instalment, even though he initially thought he would be stepping back from the series for a time to focus on other projects.
He told Deadline: “Let’s say that I thought that after ‘Part Two’ that I will take a break, that I will go back in the woods and stay in the woods for a while to recover. But the woods weren’t really suiting me, and I would go back behind the camera faster than I think. But that’s all I can say.”
Villeneuve revealed he was “in the writing zone right now”, though made an effort not to call the film ‘Dune: Part Three’.
He explained the first two movies felt like “one entity” to him, and added: “It’s a movie made in two parts. It’s finished, it’s done.”
The third instalment will be based on Herbert’s second novel in the franchise ‘Dune: Messiah’, and will follow Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) 12 years into his reign as emperor of the known universe as the religious sect he created around himself begins to spiral out of his control.
The filmmaker added he wanted to “do something completely different” with the upcoming blockbuster, while also sticking to the general story beats of Herbert’s book.
Villeneuve explained: “Like Herbert did with ‘Dune: Messiah’, I think it’ll be a great idea to do something completely different. The story takes place like 12 years after where we left the characters at the end of ‘Part Two’.
“Their journey, their story is different this time, and that’s why I always say that while it’s the same world it’s a new film with new circumstances.”
As well as Chalamet, the director confirmed Zendaya, Florence Pugh and Anya Taylor-Joy would be reprising their respective roles in the film, and hinted audiences could expect to see the movie in 2026.
The filmmaker said: “They have to return. They are with the main cast when it happens. And more worms. What can I say?”

Sebastian Stan ‘desperately wanted’ to play Captain Kirk in Star Trek reboot

OHMYGOSSIP — Sebastian Stan “desperately wanted” to play Captain Kirk in ‘Star Trek’.
Long before he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as James ‘Bucky’ Barnes, the 42-year-old actor revealed he had auditioned for the main role in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 sci-fi reboot and got “really close” to landing the part before Chris Pine ultimately signed on the dotted line.
During an appearance on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, Stan said: “Captain Kirk for J.J. Abrams; that was one of the first I got very close to.
“I remember I was really, really close, and I remember I had a screen test with [Abrams] at Paramount, and my manager had me do a separate photo shoot where I would try and replicate all these William Shatner pictures just to send to him, see how much I looked like him, but I didn’t get it.”
As well as ‘Star Trek’, Stan also revealed he had auditioned for the leading role in 2011’s ‘Green Lantern’, though admitted he knew the part likely would be won by someone else as he was up against stiff competition.
He recalled: “‘Green Lantern’ was another that I screen tested for.
“I remember getting there, and it was like me, Justin Timberlake, Jared Leto, Ryan Reynolds and maybe one other person, and I’m looking at these guys going, ‘There’s no way this is happening!’
“But you come close, and it wouldn’t happen, and in a way, I gotta tell you, looking back, I’m almost glad it didn’t. Because I don’t know if I could have handled that level of attention like some of those guys.”
Stan will be reprising his role as Bucky Barnes in ‘Thunderbolts*’, and previously said he was “excited” to be returning to the MCU after being absent from the franchise since 2021’s Disney+ show ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’.
‘The Apprentice’ actor – who will star opposite Florence Pugh, David Harbour and Wyatt Russell in the 2025 flick – told Variety in January: “I’m excited. I’m going to go back in a month or so. I’ve missed it. It’s a great cast.”

Andrew Garfield says Mel Gibson ‘deserves to make films’

OHMYGOSSIP — Andrew Garfield has come to the defence of Mel Gibson and insisted the director “deserves to make films” following his anti-Semitic scandal in 2006.
The 41-year-old actor – who is Jewish – worked with the Gibson, 68, on 2016 World War II drama ‘Hacksaw Ridge’, and he doesn’t agree that the ‘Mad Max’ star Gibson should continue to be shunned in Hollywood as he has learned from his past mistakes and is a “real empathetic guy”.
During an interview with PEOPLE, Garfield said: “He’s done a lot of beautiful healing with himself. And thank God. Because he’s an amazing filmmaker, and I think he deserves to make films.
“He deserves to tell stories, because he has a very, very big, compassionate heart. He’s the kind of director that would come from behind the monitors, just with his eyes wet.
“He knew when it was right and he knew when it wasn’t right. And I just really trusted him. And he’s a visceral storyteller so he can feel … He’s like he can’t help but feel everything. He’s a real empathetic guy.”
‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ star added he had had “deep, important conversations” with the director during their time working on ‘Hacksaw Ridge’, and emphasised everybody “deserves second chances”.
He added: “I learned a lot, actually. I learned that people can heal. I learned that people can change, that people can get help. I learned that everyone deserves respect. And that people deserve second chances, third chances, fourth chances. That none of us are infallible.”
Currently, Gibson is working on ‘The Passion of Christ: Resurrection’ – the sequel to the 2004 religious historical drama – and ‘Lethal Weapon 5’, though admitted he is unsure which film he will focus on first as the production schedules for both projects are up in the air.
When ComicBook.com asked the ‘Braveheart’ actor which movie he’d tackle first, he said: “I don’t know, and that’s the funny thing.
“I mean, there’s various obstacles to getting any film up on its feet, and not just budgetary, but there’s like, there’s 1,000,001 reasons why something goes and why it doesn’t.
“So it’s really kind of a c***shoot at this point what goes first and which came first, whether it’s the chicken or the egg.”
On July 28, 2006, Gibson was arrested by Sheriff’s Deputy James Mee of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for driving under the influence (DUI) while speeding in his vehicle with an open container of alcohol, when the arresting officer refused to allow him to drive home, Gibson ranted: “F****** Jews… the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world. Are you a Jew?”
In the aftermath of the incident, Gibson issued a public apology and said sorry again for his words and actions during a TV interview with Diane Sawyer. He also asked to meet with Jewish leaders to help him “discern the appropriate path for healing” and began receiving treatment for alcoholism.
