‘A great weight and responsibility’: Colman Domingo felt under pressure making Rustin

OHMYGOSSIP — Colman Domingo felt “great weight and responsibility” on the film ‘Rustin’.
The 54-year-old actor plays civil rights activist Bayard Rustin – who helped Martin Luther King Jr. and others to organise the historic 1963 March on Washington – in the biopic and felt under pressure to bring the relatively unknown historical figure to life in the picture, which is produced by former US President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama’s company Higher Ground.
In conversation with Jacob Elordi for Variety’s ‘Actors on Actors’ series, Colman said: “I thought it was such a travesty that we didn’t know anything about Bayard Rustin, his story and his influence on the Civil Rights movement.
“Then the idea that someone like President Obama and Michelle Obama were making sure this story is told, there’s a great weight and responsibility.”
The ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ star continued: “You want to do all you can to show a living, breathing soul, an ordinary human being trying to do something extraordinary.
“It’s my first leading role in a film. I wanted to do all that I could to get the nuances of his body, his voice and his mind, but also his soul.”
Jacob and Colman have both featured in the TV series ‘Euphoria’ and the ‘Saltburn’ actor gushed about his colleague’s “transformation” to play Rustin.
Elordi said: “Your transformation was everything. Starting with your voice. There’s not many videos of him talking, but you nailed it.”

‘Little nods to everything I’ve worked on’: Sam Esmail made references to old work in Leave the World Behind

OHMYGOSSIP — Sam Esmail made references to his previous work in ‘Leave the World Behind’.
The 46-year-old director has helmed the new Netflix apocalyptic thriller that stars Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali and included nods to his previous projects – including the movie ‘Comet’ and the TV series ‘Mr. Robot’ – in the film’s plot.
Sam told The Hollywood Reporter: “It felt pretty natural, and to be honest with you, I didn’t just do it with ‘Mr. Robot’. There are little nods to everything I’ve worked on, from ‘Homecoming’ and ‘Comet’ to ‘Robot’.
“I fancy myself as creating my own little universe whenever I make a film, so I thought to myself, ‘Why not connect them all?’ It’s more fun that way.”
The movie tells the story of the Sandford family and their disastrous weekend getaway at the Long Island home of G.H. Scott (Ali) where a gradual breakdown in technology points to a potential apocalypse and Esmail had real-life chaos on his mind when making the project.
He said: “Whenever I set out to do anything that’s fictional, and this is fictional… I sometimes feel like I need to repeat that. This is speculative.
“I am taking what’s out there in the world and shifting around some variables, and then asking that what-if question. But what gives me anxiety is when reality overlaps.
“It frightens me because I feel like the lines between reality and what I’m creating are a lot farther than what actually happens.”
Directors Guillermo Del Toro and Rian Johnson are mentioned in the credits and Sam was grateful for the pair’s assistance.
Asked if they lent some help, the director said: “One thousand per cent. Guillermo is a mensch. He’s a filmmaker’s filmmaker. He really cares, and the thing that blew me away about his feedback is that he’s really honest. So he gave notes and he gave criticisms, but they never once felt disrespectful or hurtful. It was just about being a cheerleader for the movie.
“And same with Rian. I feel so honoured that these two masters were able to watch the film and give me feedback. They’re really just out to support filmmakers and to support watching good movies, and so it was pretty flattering to get their support.”

King of the Jungle Sam Thompson received 57 percent of the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! vote

OHMYGOSSIP — Sam Thompson received 57 per cent of the vote in the ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’ final.
The 31-year-old ‘Made In Chelsea’ star was in the final three with retired boxer Tony Bellew and Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage, but managed to charm audiences enough to be crowned King of the Jungle.
According to statistics released by ITV, Sam earned 57 per cent of the votes cast, whilst runner-up Tony trailed behind with 14 per cent less than the podcaster.
In an earlier poll, Sam took 43 per cent of the votes, with Tony and Nigel receiving 31 and 26 per cent respectively, leaving the GB News host in third place.
When presenters Ant and Dec announced the result, the podcaster was left “overwhelmed”.
He said: “I’m really overwhelmed, I didn’t think I’d even be invited on the show. I don’t know what to say.”
Fighting through tears, Sam thanked all of his supporters who made the effort to vote for him.
He said: “I’m so grateful, thank you so much. I’ve dreamed of doing this show for years and years and you’ve made a boy’s dream come true.”
Despite coming second, Bellew, 41, was over-the-moon that Sam had won, with the two becoming incredibly close during their time in the jungle.
He said: “I knew, 10 days ago. I knew when I first met him, I’ve never met a person like him … He deserves it more than anything and I couldn’t be happier.”

Nigel Farage told I’m A Celeb bosses to ‘go to hell’ over shower plea

OHMYGOSSIP — Nigel Farage told ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’ bosses to “go to hell” after they said he couldn’t shower naked.
The 59-year-old former politician – who was one of the main campaigners for Brexit, which saw UK citizens vote to leave the European Union in 2016 – caused a stir due to his penchant for washing himself in his birthday suit in the camp’s shower facilities.
Despite being asked to cover his modesty, Nigel – who finished in third place – ignored pleas, citing it would be unhygienic to wear trunks the whole time.
Speaking to The Sun newspaper, he said: “I was told that I shouldn’t be naked. And yet the doctor said, personal hygiene really matters in the jungle, checking yourself for horrors like leeches matter.
“You’re not going to do that unless you are naked so I ignored what ITV said. And I continued to shower naked every day.
“Interestingly, many other campmates did the same. Only I got the publicity, but you know something? I couldn’t care less.
“The only fight I had in the jungle with the producers was over that.
“I had a huge row. I was told in interest of taste and in respect for the cameramen and women that I shouldn’t be doing it.
“I said, ‘Go to hell!'”
The GB News host’s reservations were proven to be correct, as the new king of the jungle Sam Thompson had woken up to find a leech in a very intimate area.
He said: “The day I did it [showered nude] it was lashing with rain. Leeches will crawl up your leg and embed themselves in the warmest part of your body.
“Sam did not shower naked and Sam did not check himself. Sam woke up one morning screaming – the leach was huge. It was on his a*** and the sleeping bag looked like a murder scene.
“So there were very good reasons. Afterwards, my other campmates did the same, four other blokes stripped naked.”

Ncuti Gatwa got told off by Russell T Davies for swearing in Doctor Who costume

OHMYGOSSIP — Ncuti Gatwa got told off for swearing in his ‘Doctor Who’ costume.
The 31-year-old actor takes full control of the TARDIS from the Christmas Day special ‘The Church on Ruby Road’, and his first full season as the Fifteenth Doctor airs in 2024.
Ncuti has revealed that he was called into showrunner Russell T. Davies’ office after using foul language whilst dressed as the Time Lord.
Speaking to Radio Times magazine, he said: “The only time I’ve ever gotten in trouble for anything was when I swore while wearing a ‘Doctor Who’ costume.
“I got called into Russell’s office. Woo! And he let me know that that’s not acceptable. He said, ‘Do what you want when you’re out of costume, but when you’re in costume, do not let us catch you swearing.'”
Despite having to remind Ncuti about his responsibilities to the BBC sci-fi show’s younger fans, Russell emphasised that both he and newcomer Millie Gibson – who plays new companion Ruby, a girl who was abandoned at a church on Christmas Eve – are “incredible performers” who have a special chemistry.
Speaking to SFX magazine, screenwriter Russell said: “They’re both completely incredible performers, they just have a brilliant charisma.
“There’s a real spark, a real crackle of energy between the two of them when they’re performing, it’s electric.”
As well as praising the two new lead stars, Russell, 60, teased what fans can expect in the upcoming Christmas special, which follows the trio of 60th anniversary specials which saw David Tennant return as the Doctor and Catherine Tate as companion Donna Noble.
The ‘It’s a Sin’ creator said: “It’s completely a reinvention. Reinvention of the show, brand new, but not a reboot, it’s the same old show, everything starts again, everything’s seen through the eyes of Ruby Sunday and it’s that lovely feeling of here we go, a new era beginning.
“It [the episode] kind of goes into territory we’ve never touched before.”

Lee Mack says the studio sitcom is ‘worth protecting’

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Not Going Out’ creator Lee Mack says the studio sitcom is “worth protecting”.
The 55-year-old comedian has written and starred in the BBC comedy series since 2006, but the show has received criticism for being old fashioned.
Lee insists he’s proud that his show is compared to the classic sitcoms from the 1970s and he insists the format is “uniquely British thing” that should be cherished.
Speaking at a screening of the upcoming ‘Not Going Out’ Christmas special – which will be the programme’s 100th episode – he said: “It’s a very unique thing, the studio sitcom and I think it’s worth protecting, it’s important to keep it going.
“It’s almost uniquely British thing. I know the Americans do it. But the way we do it is uniquely British, so I like the idea of trying to keep that going. But I’m also very lucky that it’s very unfashionable, because no younger, up-and-coming comic is trying to take my place…
“The critics often say, ‘Is this type of sitcom from the ’70s?’ That’s an odd thing to say because if you ask people to list their favourite sitcoms ever, they’re all from the ’70s – ‘Fawlty Towers’, ‘Dad’s Army’, ‘Steptoe And Son’.
“The critics are basically saying ‘Not Going Out’ is too much like all of those brilliant shows!”
Lee also cannot understand why ‘Not Going Out’ is lambasted for including laughter from the studio audience who watch it being filmed.
He added: “When some critics say and they often do, ‘Do we still need to hear people laughing in the background?’ I always think, ‘how do they cope when they’re watching a play?’ Are they constantly going ‘shush, stop laughing at this comedy, I’m trying to watch this.’
“That’s the joy of it! We’re filming a live theatrical event… I like the idea that you’re filming something that’s happening on that night. And that’s what I think is different. I’m the first say we’re not a realistic sitcom, the language is not realistic. So without the laugh, it just sounds odd, because all the characters are quite often knowingly telling a gag. To have that to absolute silence would be weird. You need that laugh constantly for it to make sense.”

Tony Bellew almost quit I’m A Celebrity

OHMYGOSSIP — Tony Bellew almost quit I”m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!’ but his wife Rachael talked him out of it.
The former boxer competed on the ITV show alongside stars including JLS singer Marvin Humes and politician Nigel Farage and he ended up coming second to winner Sam Thompson, but Tony has admitted he almost gave up and walked out after Rachael made a surprise visit to the jungle camp.
During an appearance on ‘Good Morning Britain’ on Monday (11.12.23), he explained: “I’ll never quit no matter how hard it gets. It was difficult. I was going through a lot before I went in there with my personal life, losing my nan and I missed my son’s birthday which I promised him I’d never do again after I retired.
“When Rachael appeared in the jungle it broke me for a good 10 minutes. I wanted to walk out and leave with her.
“She told me I couldn’t. It would have been such a disappointment for the kids. It broke my heart to leave her again.”
He added of the difficult times in the jungle: “You’re alone with your own thoughts and my mind isn’t the best, it wasn’t easy. It was very very difficult and you think to yourself: ‘What am I doing here?'”
Tony went on to admit he doesn’t feel disappointed about coming second – because he’s convinced Sam was a worthy winner. He said: “10 days ago, I knew. I knew when I first met him, I’ve never met a person like him … He deserves it more than anything and I couldn’t be happier … Everyone was amazing … I know this is called ‘I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!’ but I’m not one of them, a celebrity, and no one felt like a celebrity, they were just normal.
“It’s the first time in my life I’ve sat with a bunch of strangers and just thought, ‘You’re all sound people’.”

The ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ contestant – who is partnered with Nikita Kuzmin, 25 – has opened up about all the online hate he has been getting since joining the BBC talent show and insisted he lucky to have a “thick skin” as he attempts to brush off all of the negativity ahead of competing in the grand final next weekend.
After a fan told haters to leave Layton alone, the 29-year-old actor replied in a post on X – formerly known as Twitter – writing: “Luckily I have thick skin but it’s so draining that so-called ‘Strictly fans’ go out of their way to drag me down to lift others up.
“Their fave couples would be SO embarrassed by their comments and so should they. They’ll never dim my shine, Big love.”
Layton also revealed on social media that his grandmother had no clue he was in a same-sex partnership on the show and when she found out, she insisted she’s just pleased he’s “happy”.
He posted: “Just rang my Nan in Jamaica and she managed to watch some of Strictly at a friends house on the computer.

Craig’s colleague Motsi Mabuse, 42, added: “There is nothing that has been better, and this is a testament to your hard work and anyone around you, well done.”
Layton is set to compete in the final alongside Ellie Leach, 22, and Bobby Brazier, 20.

Kerry Katona’s daughter hospitalised

OHMYGOSSIP — Kerry Katona was left frantic after her nine-year-old daughter was hospitalised and placed in isolation.
The former Atomic Kitten star’s youngest child DJ fell ill last week and was admitted to hospital where doctors diagnosed her with a nasty bout of flu – and Kerry had to take time off from her panto rehearsals so she could stay by her side.
In her column for new! magazine, the mother-of-five explained: “I’ve had a nightmare this week as DJ was taken into hospital for tests after having a really high temperature for a couple of days.
“It turned out she had really bad influenza, so they had to put her in isolation. I took some days off work to stay with her.”
DJ has since been discharged from hospital and is receiving home visits from nurses while Kerry’s fiance Ryan Mahoney looks after her.
Kerry, 43, added: “She’s home now, but nurses are still coming to us to visit. It’s been scary and she’s still full of cold, but she’s on the mend. Ryan is looking after her while I go back to work.”
It comes after Kerry admitted she has “health anxiety” about DJ – whose dad was Kerry late ex George Kay – after the youngster experienced a number of “fainting spells”.
In a previous column for the magazine, Kerry wrote: “I have health anxiety when it comes to DJ. I worry about her, especially recently as she’s had a few fainting spells.
“We took her for an MRI and the doctor found something. We’re waiting as her results have been sent to a neurosurgeon, but the doctor seems to think she’s alright. “He said that lots of us could have what she has but we’ve just not had MRIs.”
Kerry is also mother to Molly, 22, and 20-year-old Lilly-Sue with first husband Brian McFadden, and Heidi, 16, and Max, 15, with second husband Mark Croft.

Hugh Grant given a picture of naked Oompa Loompa by ‘Wonka’ director

OHMYGOSSIP — Hugh Grant was given a picture of a naked Oompa Loompa by ‘Wonka’ director Paul King.
The ‘Four Weddings And a Funeral’ actor, 63, plays an 18-inch tall Oompa Loompa in the new ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ prequel, which arrived in cinemas on Friday. (08.12.23)
Hugh told People about its maker playing a prank on him: “Paul, quite early on in the editing process, sent me a mock-up of the Oompa Loompa stark naked.
“And my little children were a little alarmed at that.”
When asked why Paul had sent the image, Hugh added it was “to amuse him”.
Paul explained to People the film’s effects team were still figuring out “the colour of the skin and the way the hair works and on all the kind of details of it” and said at that stage of animation the Oompa Loompa “had no clothes”.
But Paul, 45, admitted about the naked image of the Oompa Loompa: “It was one of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen in my life. If it ever leaks out, a generation of children will be scarred.”
He added the figure “was very delicately pixelated”, and said: “There was nothing untoward. It’s just something once you’ve seen, you can’t unsee it.”
Hugh, who previously worked with Paul on ‘Paddington 2’, in which he played villain Phoenix Buchanan, added he signed on to play an Oompa Loompa because he’s “into my freak phase of my career, sort of circus freaks” with characters who are “weirder and weirder”.
Paul said: “I think he has a very pleasing lack of vanity. He’s very happy to look as ridiculous as I ask him to – I got him in a dog suit eating dog food in ‘Paddington 2’.
“So I think once he’d done that, he’d already hit bottom. This was coming back up in the dignity state.”

Two stars ‘will play James Bond in next 007 instalment’

OHMYGOSSIP — Two stars will reportedly play James Bond in the next 007 instalment.
A pair of A-listers are said to be in the frame to play younger and older versions of the spy in the upcoming Bond flick – with insiders adding Paul Mescal is top of the list for producers to play the more youthful Bond.
The Sun reported the film “will star two 007s – one younger and one older”, and added: “Bosses have begun lining up actors to play both roles and among their top targets is Oscar-nominated Paul Mescal.”
Paul, 27, is understood to be in talks to play the younger MI6 spy in the next flick, which will be the 26th in the franchise.
The star shot to fame in 2020 in BBC Three’s sex drama ‘Normal People’, and he’s playing Lucius Verus in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel due out in 2024.
Paul told Digital Spy in 2020: “Would I play Bond? Yeah? I don’t know. If it ever came my way, we’d discuss it.”
‘No Time To Die’ Bond girl Ana de Armas, 35, has said Paul should replace Daniel Craig, 55, who played 007 from 2006 to 2021 – but 007 producer Barbara Broccoli, 63, has said her team have not “even begun” the process of deciding how to update the Bond franchise.
A spokesman for the producer said about the rumours Paul will play a younger 007: “We do not comment on speculation.”
Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan has said he thinks it would be an “amazing privilege” to direct a James Bond film – but only if he could choose the next 007 star.
The ‘Oppenheimer’ director, 53, whose blockbusters include ‘The Dark Knight Trilogy’ as well as ‘Interstellar’ and ‘Dunkirk’ has previously been in talks with Bond producers, and has now said he would be willing to make one of the spy movies if it felt like the “right moment” creatively.
He told the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast with Josh Horowitz: “It would be an amazing privilege to do one. It has to be the right moment in your creative life where you can express what you want to express.
“I love those movies. The influence of those movies on my filmography is embarrassingly apparent.”
Host Josh, 47, asked Christopher: “I would imagine you’d want to be involved in casting your Bond?” – with the filmmaker replying: “You wouldn’t want to take on a film not fully committed to what you could bring to the table creatively.
“So as a writer, casting director, everything – it’s the full package.”

Greta Gerwig still amazed Barbie was green lit

OHMYGOSSIP — Greta Gerwig is still in “disbelief” that ‘Barbie’ got made.
The 40-year-old writer-and-director’s movie about the Mattel doll – which starred Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling – was this year’s biggest movie and the filmmaker is still astonished it was greenlit because the script she and Noah Baumbach wrote was so “bananas”.
She told Empire magazine: “I share your disbelief that this ever got made.
“The script we wrote was outlandish and bananas and really just unlike anything else.
“The fact that they signed on even initially was sort of incredible.”
Greta acknowledged some parts of her vision for the film were “strange” but she was determined to carry on regardless, even when it took some time to get others on board.
She added: “Then once we were making it, it was totally bold and outrageous, even in the execution.
“When we were first talking to department heads, they said, ‘Oh well, surely we’ll need to shoot in Australia or in California so we can get the beaches.
“And I said, ‘Oh no – everything’s interior. We’re gonna shoot this all inside. They’re all going to be builds.’… I was like, ‘Oh yeah, no, we’re going to have painted skies and fake oceans…’
“In that moment, no-one knows what’s in your head, nobody knows that’s what you want to do.
“It’s such a strange, constructed thing. That was a bold choice.
“There were many moments throughout the making of it that I thought, ‘I just need to keep going. I’ve already committed to so much strangeness on the screen. There’s no walking back now.’ “

‘Slow Horses’ showrunner declares its new season is ‘huge step up’ in ‘scale and action’

OHMYGOSSIP — The ‘Slow Horses’ showrunner says its new season sees a “huge step up” in its “scale” and “level of action”.
Will Smith, who also wrote for ‘The Thick of It’ and ‘Veep’, stressed despite the change of pace, it was essential the Apple TV series “felt like the same show” and it “didn’t suddenly go off into feeling like it was just generic action”.
He told NME: “We still felt like it was our characters involved in it, and it still had the humour and the drama: it still felt like our show.”
The show sees its group of disgraced MI5 rejects return, including Gary Oldman’s cranky old spy Jackson Lamb.
Will added he loves writing outrageous lines for Gary, 65, in the same way he did for Peter Capaldi’s Malcolm Tucker in ‘The Thick of It’.
He said: “It gives you license to do and say all sorts of things… you also get to know how the actors deliver things, what they like, what they want more of. “You start to write to their rhythms… I know Gary wanted the scene in the show where he’s washing in the sink, squirting Fairy Liquid in his armpits.
“Gary will go for it because he’s got no vanity about it. He just loves inhabiting that character and being that guy.
“I’m waiting for the moment he tells me you can’t give me any more food to eat because he really commits to the eating.”
He said Gary had to eat close to “12 ice creams” during various takes for one scene featuring his grubby spy character.
Will added: “I don’t know where he puts it.”
The showrunner also said he and Gary are huge fans of the books by Mick Herron on which the show is based.
He said: “(Gary) is hugely collaborative. He’s probably absurdly deferential towards me in terms of his input.
“We get together and we talk and it’s small things like, ‘I could say that quicker, change that word.’
“A lot of his notes will be like, ‘Oh I can do that with a look.’
“Hopefully he feels that we have a great creative relationship in that regard.”

Kelsey Grammer hints he wants Glenn Miller’s ‘In the Mood’ played at funeral

OHMYGOSSIP — Kelsey Grammer has hinted he wants Glenn Miller’s ‘In the Mood’ played at his funeral.
The ‘Frasier’ star, 68, who played radio psychiatrist Frasier Crane from 1993 to 2004 – and who is reprising the role in a reboot of the show that started in October – added he is moved to tears every time he hears Luciano Pavarotti’s version of ‘Nessun Dorma’.
He told NME about his choice of song for his funeral: “I was working on stage with Christopher Plummer years ago when Peter Sellers died – and he had flown out to the funeral.
“And I asked, ‘How was it?’ And he said, ‘Oh Peter, you know, crazy Peter.’ “But the song he selected for his funeral was ‘In The Mood’.
“That was great. Actually, my grandmother always wanted her epitaph to be, ‘I haven’t finished my drink yet.’”
Kelsey added about tearing up over ‘Nessun Dorma’: “Holy moly, every time I hear it man. I’m just weeping when he hits that note.
“I met Pavarotti once, when I was 18. I’d just started going to Juilliard, and I was walking out past the security table and as I stepped out of the elevator, this big guy in a black mouton overcoat said, ‘Excusé, do you know, where is the theatre department floor?’
“And I said, ‘Sure man, follow me, I’ll take ya.’
“So I walked him to the third floor and a couple of kids had seen me walking by.
“Afterwards, they ran up to me and said, ‘Oh my God! Do you know him?’ But I had no idea!”

How ex-‘EastEnders’ hardman actually loves kids’ TV shows

OHMYGOSSIP — Former ‘EastEnders’ actor John Altman loves watching children’s TV favourites.
Despite his character Nasty Nick on the BBC One soap being renowned as one of its most vicious, the 71-year-old star said in reality he is a fan of shows including ‘Peppa Pig’ and ‘Igglepiggle’.
John – who was also in ‘An American Werewolf in London’ and ‘Quadrophenia’ – said about how he loves watching the children’s TV shows with his young granddaughter Lily: “When I had pneumonia I sat back and watched ‘In The Night Garden’.
“I found it quite soothing. I watch ‘Peppa Pig’ with my granddaughter.”
Dad-of-one John, who is currently starring as pantomime baddie Abanazar in ‘Aladdin’ is best known for portraying Dot Cotton’s drug-addicted son Nick in ‘EastEnders’ for 30 years from the first episode in 1985.
The character died from a heroin overdose in 2015 after he tried to kill his mum Dot, played by the late June Brown.
‘In The Night Garden’, which features hyperactive cuddly character Igglepiggle, and ‘Peppa Pig’ are crowd-pleasers for nursery age children.
John recently said he thought Dot’s ‘EastEnders’ funeral episode was too short.
He was left devastated after his onscreen mum died aged 95 in 2022 and was among the viewers who tuned in to see her character’s memorial service on the BBC soap when it aired in December last year.
But he told the Daily Star: “It seemed to be quite quick. They should have done an hour-long episode to pay homage to her. They could have put in some old scenes from over the years.
“But I do think they did June justice. I liked the cigarettes being thrown onto the coffin. June would have liked that.”
John attended June’s real-life funeral after her death and said it was strange subsequently watching her character’s memorial on TV.
He added: “It was quite bizarre. I went to her real funeral and then I watched the one on TV. I was quite moved by it. I found it very emotional.”
