Steve Coogan being sued for libel over ‘weasel-like’ role

OHMYGOSSIP — Steve Coogan is being sued for libel by a university official over a “weasel-like” role in the actor’s film about the discovery of Richard III’s remains in a car park.
The Alan Partridge creator, 58, was a writer and producer on ‘The Lost King’, which tells the real-life story of amateur history sleuth Phillipa Langley’s quest to unearth the ruler in Leicester in 2012, 500 years after he was killed.
Richard Taylor, a former deputy registrar of the University of Leicester, is suing Steve, his production firm Baby Cow and Pathe Productions.
A High Court hearing in London on Thursday (29.02.24) was told by William Bennett KC the university administrator was unfairly portrayed in ‘The Lost King’ as a “suited bean-counter” who was “patronising and misogynistic” to Phillipa, played by Sally Hawkins, 22, in the 2022 movie.
Andrew Caldecott KC, representing Steve, insisted the firm was “based on a true story” rather than a literal portrayal.
He stated: “It would be clear to the ordinary reasonable viewer that the film is not a documentary, it is a dramatisation of events. The concept of fictional films based on real events is not a new one.”
Mr Bennett KC said in his written submission: “The relevant context is the ‘good versus bad’ narrative, which runs through the film.
“Ms Langley is portrayed as the gutsy underdog heroine struggling against opposition and the claimant as the arrogant villain. He takes the credit, which was rightfully hers, for himself and the university.”
Richard Taylor is now chief operating officer at Loughborough University, and the court also heard he was shown in Steve’s movie as a “devious, weasel-like person” and a “suited bean-counter” who mocked Richard III’s disability.
Richard is played in ‘The Lost King’ by Lee Ingleby, 48, with Steve playing the estranged husband of historian Phillipa.
Steve and the two production companies are defending the libel claim, and the case continues.

Death in Paradise star Genesis Lynea lands role in new series of Doctor Who

OHMYGOSSIP — Genesis Lynea has been cast in the new series of ‘Doctor Who’.
The 34-year-old actress plays Andrina Harper in ‘Death in Paradise’ and has also had starring roles in ‘Casualty’ and ‘Silent Witness’, but she will now be joining the upcoming series of the BBC sci-fi show, in a part which has been described as “very different” to anything she has ever done before.
In the latest issue of the Doctor Who magazine, showrunner Russell T Davies wrote: “As the heat rises and May gets closer, it’s exciting to reveal even more cast names. Bear in mind we’ve still got big surprises to come!
“To ramp up your anticipation, it’s a joy to welcome Genesis Lynea on board. It was a great delight for me to work with Genesis on an ITV series called ‘You and Me’ in 2023, and so much fun to work with her again, so soon, in a very different role.”
Genesis – who also originated the role of Anna of Cleves in the megahit West End musical ‘Six’ – will be seen on the upcoming series alongside Gwïon Morris Jones, who is also joining for a guest stint.
The 14th series of ‘Doctor Who’ will air from May, with former ‘Sex Education’ actor Ncuti Gatwa in the leading role following a series of Christmas specials that saw David Tennant – who initially starred as the titular Time Lord from 2006 until 2010 – make a brief comeback.
Ncuti recently admitted David’s return was “a nice little lead-in” before him, because David was “a great inspiration” to a young Ncuti, when he used to dream of working as an actor while growing up in Scotland.
He told The Big Issue magazine: “A nice little lead-in for me! It feels like it’s come full circle – because David was my Doctor and such a great inspiration to me as an actor.
“I would have been 13 – a pivotal time. And firstly, he’s Scottish. Plus he was so charismatic and fun – I mean all the Doctors have been fun, all the way back.
“Well, I don’t know if you can say that about William Hartnell. Maybe he wasn’t fun. But David had such a Scottish almost feral-ness to him, which is what I liked. I felt an affinity to that. So for him, of all people, to be handing the baton over – it just feels really surreal.”

Paddy McGuinness makes This Morning hosting debut and jokes he’d be taken off air within ‘minutes’

OHMYGOSSIP — Paddy McGuinness thought he would be taken off air after just 20 minutes during his ‘This Morning’ debut.
The 50-year-old comedian took on hosting duties for Friday’s (01.03.24) episode of the ITV1 magazine show alongside Alison Hammond, and joked at the top of the programme that his time on-air would be short-lived.
Paddy also quipped he had regular host Dermot O’Leary and forthcoming host Ben Shephard “tied up” behind-the-scenes.
He said: “I’m giving us 20 minutes before we’re taken off air. I’ve had to put another T-shirt on because my nipples have got a mind of their own and I’ve got Dermot O’Leary and Ben Shephard tied up in my dressing room. That’s how I like it! We’ve got a corker for you today.”
The former ‘Take Me Out’ star’s debut as a presenter of the programme came just hours after businessman Martin Lewis will be at the helm of the show next week after telling producers that it had always been a dream of his to front at least one episode.
The 51-year-old businessman is normally seen on the ITV1 magazine programme dishing out financial advice to viewers but on Monday (04.03.23), he will join former ‘Big Brother’ star Josie Gibson, 39, to present a full episode of the show.
He wrote on X: “I’ve been expert-ing on
@thismorning for 21yrs – in recent times usually from home. Well I’m going in on Monday… because having mentioned off-hand to the producers last week that I’d like to present it ONCE (bucket list thing), they said come on and give it a go! ”
Martin joked that he has “no idea” if he will be any good in his new role but thinks it will be “fun” to give it a go just before Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley take over as the full-time hosts.
He said: “No idea if I’ll be any good at it, especially the less serious bits, but it’ll be fun to try – before the proper new dynamic duo of Ben and Cat get going.”
Ben and Cat will soon be seen from Monday to Thursday on the ITV Daytime show, while Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary will continue in their roles as Friday presenters and holiday cover.

‘Nothing is scripted’: Karren Brady dismisses claims that Lord Sugar has a joke writer on The Apprentice

OHMYGOSSIP — Karren Brady has rubbished claims that Lord Sugar has a gag writer on ‘The Apprentice’.
The 76-year-old business mogul has notably increased his wisecracks in the latest series of the BBC One reality show but his long-serving aide is adamant that the one-liners are as a result of his natural gift for comedy.
Karren told The Sun newspaper’s TVBiz column: “His jokes are all off the cuff. Nothing is scripted.
“What you see actually happens. There’s no autocue, no retakes, no nothing.
“None of us know what’s going to be said or come out in the boardroom until he starts asking the questions.”
The 54-year-old businesswoman insists that Lord Sugar is “incredibly witty” despite adopting a “stern and grumpy” persona when dealing with candidates on the show.
Karren said: “His persona on television is that he’s quite stern and grumpy. But actually I’ve spent a lot of time with him and we’re friends – and he’s an incredibly witty and funny individual.”
The West Ham United vice-chairman has served as one of Lord Sugar’s aides on ‘The Apprentice’ since 2010 and insists that it is the only TV show she will do, despite being offered the opportunity to take part in ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.
She said: “I do ‘The Apprentice’ not because I want to be on TV. I love the ethos, which is to show how to run a business and be an entrepreneur and build resistance. I love the outcome.
“Alan’s invested millions of pounds into business through this show and many of them are hugely successful and it changes the winner’s life.
“They’re turning over millions of pounds and they employ hundreds of people. It’s a show with a real purpose – it’s not a glittery ball you win.”

‘I’m 61 – it’s no surprise I’m a bit overweight’ Nick Knowles doesn’t worry about his look

OHMYGOSSIP — Nick Knowles has insisted it is “no great surprise” he is “a bit overweight”, but he doesn’t “worry” about what he looks like.
The 61-year-old TV presenter recently filmed an adventure for his new travel series ‘The Mighty Mississippi with Nick Knowles’, and while he admits there are “young” and “super fit” adventurers around such as Bear Grylls, he doesn’t lose sleep over appearing on TV in a wetsuit.
He told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “There are lots of people making adventure programmes and a lot of them, like Bear Grylls, are young, they’re super fit.
“I’m 61 now and it’s no great surprise that I’m a bit overweight.
“Even putting on a wetsuit and appearing on telly … you can’t worry.”
The ‘DIY SOS’ star doesn’t worry about “what [he] looks like”, and was inspired by a man he met on one of his travel series who told him: “You shouldn’t have to wait for a terminal diagnosis to go and make the most of your life.”
He added: “I met a chap who cycled from Mexico down to the bottle of Argentina.
“He said to me, ‘You shouldn’t have to wait for a terminal diagnosis to go and make the most of your life’.
“I couldn’t agree more. You’ll be amazed at what you’re capable of if you push yourself. You can’t worry about what you look like or failing.
“Rather than sit on the sofa or going on a cruise or a package holiday – they’re all good things to do, don’t get me wrong – but I want to get up every day and challenge myself and do something a bit more extraordinary. I will say if I’m terrified or that I don’t fancy this, but then I do it anyway.
“You have to push yourself and try new experiences.”
Nick recently revealed he pays for “helicopter extraction cover” when he’s out filming his wild TV adventures, because his antics are so dangerous.
He told The Sun newspaper: “You can’t get insurance because a lot of the programming I’m doing, they are such big adventures.
“I actually now pay an enormous amount to ensure I have helicopter extraction cover instead.”

Sting offered Austin Butler his underwear from Dune

OHMYGOSSIP — Sting has offered Austin Butler his underwear from the original ‘Dune’ movie.
The 32-year-old actor plays Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in the sci-fi epic sequel, and his character was first portrayed by the ‘Fields of Gold’ hitmaker in the original 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel.
The pair met at the premiere in New York City over the weekend, and Butler told ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’: “It was so surreal. My mind was blown.
“He’s the best… He came up afterward, and he was so, so, lovely and just debonair.
“I asked him about [starring in the original Dune movie] and he said he still has the codpiece from the original [Dune], he said he’s going to dry clean it and let me wear it if I want to.”
The character didn’t appear in 2021 movie ‘Dune: Part One’, but he’s set to serve as a main antagonist in the sequel.
When it came to bringing Feyd-Rautha to life, his version is a totally bald and utterly ruthless killer.
He added: “The thing with a villainous character — I’d never played a character quite like him, and I didn’t want to judge him, so it was a lot of imagining what his childhood was like.”
However, Butler made sure to tone down his method acting for the role, having previously thrown himself all in for ‘Elvis’.
He told the Los Angeles Times newspaper: “I’ve definitely in the past, with ‘Elvis’, explored living within that world for three years and that being the only thing that I think about day and night.
“With Feyd, I knew that that would be unhealthy for my family and friends.”
He continued: “So I made a conscious decision to have a boundary. It allowed for more freedom between action and cut because I knew I was going to protect everybody else outside of the context of what we were doing.
“That’s not to say that it doesn’t bleed into your life. But I knew that I wasn’t going to do anything dangerous outside of that boundary, and in a way that allowed me to go deeper.”

Mila Kunis will star and produce new romantic comedy The 47 Night Stand

OHMYGOSSIP — Mila Kunis is set to star in ‘The 47 Night Stand’.
The 40-year-old actress will also produce Skydance’s new movie, which is being written by ‘Friends’ and ‘How I Met Your Mother’ writer Greg Malins.
As reported by Deadline, the film is still in its early stages with a synopsis and logline being kept closely under wraps for now.
However, the outlet noted that it’s been described as a “fresh and funny take on romance in the tradition of classic favorites”.
Kunis will serve as producer through her Orchard Farm Productions, along with Ruben Fleisher and Skydance trio David Eillson, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger.
It won’t be former ‘That 70s Show’ star’s first foray into a big screen romantic comedy, having previously appeared in the likes of ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ and ‘Friends With Benefits’.
Her next movie role will be in indie comedy ‘Goodrich’, alongside Andie MacDowell and ‘Beetlejuice’ actor Michael Keaton, as she plays art dealer Andy Goodrich’s daughter Grace.
The movie will tell “the story of art dealer Andy MacDowell (Keaton), a man whose life is upended when his younger second wife leaves him and enters a 90-day rehab program while also threatening divorce”.
The synopsis continues: “Goodrich takes charge of their nine-year-old twins, thrusting him into the world of modern parenthood for which he is deeply unprepared.
“With his career falling by the wayside, he leans on his grown and pregnant daughter Grace for support, and ultimately evolves into the father Grace never had.”
‘Home Again’ filmmaker Hallie Meyers-Shyer – whose parents are Nancy Myers and Charles Shyer – is serving as director and writer.
Last year, Kunis reprised her role as Jackie Burkhart for a guest role in ‘That 90s Show’ – a spin-off based on the series which turned her into a star – while recent film credits include 2022’s ‘Luckiest Girl Alive’ and 2021’s ‘Breaking News in Yuba County’.

Dakota Fanning cast in new horror film Vicious

OHMYGOSSIP — Dakota Fanning has been cast in new horror film ‘Vicious’.
The 30-year-old actress will team up with director Bryan Bernito – who has previously helmed the likes of ‘The Strangers’ and ‘The Dark and the Wicked’ – on the upcoming film, which is set to be released by Paramount Pictures in August 2025.
As reported by Variety, Fanning will play a young woman who receives a strange gift from a light night visitor.
However, the present leads her down a rabbit hole as she finds herself finding for her life.
It comes as the star is set to hit Netflix screens in ‘Ripley’ before appearing in M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter Ishana’s debut supernatural thriller ‘The Watchers’.
She also recently finished work on Nicole Kidman’s movie ‘The Perfect Couple’, which is also coming to Netflix.
In ‘The Watchers’ she will play Mina, a 28-year-old artist who gets stranded in an expansive, untouched forest in western Ireland.
When she finds shelter, Mina unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers who are watched and stalked by mysterious creatures every night.
Ishana wrote the movie that was acquired by New Line after a competitive bidding war for the picture – which is slated for release in June 2024.
Ishana served as a writer and director on the acclaimed Apple TV+ series ‘Servant’ which has her father as showrunner, while she also worked with her dad on the films ‘Old’ and ‘Knock at the Cabin’.
Night previously explained how he couldn’t wait to see his daughter get to work behind the camera.
The 52-year-old director said: “It’s been beautiful, you know? I’ve been around long enough now. I started when I was 21, and it’s so wild. My daughter is going to start her career, at 23, in filmmaking.
“I’m like, ‘Wow, what a journey you’re about to go on!’ And of course, her journey is tied to mine in some ways. It’s a different one.”

Hayden Christensen asked his agent for different Star Wars character

OHMYGOSSIP — Hayden Christensen thought his ‘Star Wars’ role was so “unattainable” he asked for another part.
The 42-year-old actor made his debut as Anakin Skywalker – who becomes Darth Vader – in 2002’s ‘Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones’, and he wasn’t convinced he’d get the job.
He told Empire magazine: “I was 18, and I got a call from my agent saying that they were casting for Anakin Skywalker in ‘Star Wars’ and I thought, ‘Wow, how cool.’
“But it just seemed too big. And I remember asking my agent, ‘Is there maybe another role that they’re also casting right now that you can put me up for? Because Anakin sort of seems unattainable.’
“And there was not. So I threw my name in the hat like everyone else.”
Hayden was aware of other big names up for the role – including Leonardo Di Caprio – which added to his belief he would miss out on the iconic role.
He added: “I had heard that they’d met with Leonardo and a bunch of other actors. That just confirmed my thought that the role would go to another actor.
“Through the entire auditioning process I had told myself, from day one, that I wasn’t going to get the part. It just wasn’t a possibility.
“And I think that probably helped me a lot, because it just freed me up in a lot of ways. And so it really came as a surprise to me when I got the part.”
The star – who went onto reprise the role in ‘Episode III – Revenge of the Sith’ and more recently ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ and ‘Ahsoka’ – was delighted to be working so closely with franchise creator George Lucas.
He recalled: “The scope of the opportunity — the enormity of it all — was exciting to me. It was obviously a little daunting too, but there’s a saying: ‘Pressure is privilege.’
“I just felt very lucky to have it. I was really thrilled that I was gonna get to express George’s mapping out of how someone goes from good to bad.”

Esther Rantzen’s daughter backs assisted dying campaign to avoid mum’s ‘traumatic awful demise’

OHMYGOSSIP — Dame Esther Rantzen’s daughter is backing her mother’s assisted dying campaign, because she doesn’t want the memories of her mum to be “destroyed” by a “traumatic awful demise”.
Rebecca Wilcox remembers “in vivid detail” the demise of her TV producer father Desmond Wilcox, 69, who died of heart disease in 2000, and she doesn’t want the same to happen to her mother.
Esther, 83, is demanding a debate and a free vote by MPs on assisted dying, after being told she has stage four lung cancer.
Speaking on ‘Good Morning Britain’, Rebecca said: “We would want mum to have the option of assisted dying so that our memories of her are not replaced by this traumatic awful demise. It’s all about her for us.
“Yes our memories would be destroyed and they were destroyed with my father.
“I can’t remember the last time I spoke to him but I remember in vivid detail everything that happened in the hospital before he died.”
Rebecca insisted her mum – who founded charities Childline, a helpline for children, in 1986, and The Silver Line, to help combat loneliness for older people, in 2012 – wants to have a “dignified death”.
She added: “Mum has been this person who has changed laws and who has campaigned for other people. This is the first campaign really that is about her and she wants to have a dignified death that reflects a dignified life.
“A bad death is something that a patient doesn’t choose so that is what we are talking about.
“We are talking about a good death for a patient that has chosen their death. And that death can be anything you want it to be. Doesn’t everyone want to die in bed?”
Esther – who presented the BBC’s ‘That’s Life!’ for 21 years – previously revealed she had joined Swiss euthanasia group Dignitas, which claims to offer a dignified death to terminally ill people, as a precautionary measure “if the law does not change in time”.
Assisting someone to die is illegal and prohibited by the Suicide Act 1961 and carries a 14-year jail term.

Heartbroken Paul Hollywood and Karen Hauer pay tribute to Dave Myers after Hairy Bikers star’s death

OHMYGOSSIP — Paul Hollywood and Karen Hauer are among the stars who have paid tribute to Dave Myers.
The TV chef’s sidekick, fellow chef Si King, has confirmed the sad news that his best mate “passed away peacefully” on Wednesday evening (28.02.24) aged 66, and several celebrities have sent their condolences to Dave’s family and Si.
‘Great British Bake Off’ judge Paul wrote on Instagram: “Gutted Si, this is terrible news! Love to all mate xx (sic”)
Pro dancer Karen Hauer, who partnered Dave in 2017’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, wrote in an Instagram comment: “Heartbroken”
Former ‘Bake Off’ star Candice Brown posted: “So sorry Si. Thinking of you all”
TV presenter and ‘This Morning’ fashion expert Lisa Snowdon admitted she was “absolutely heartbroken” to hear of Dave’s passing.
She wrote: “Dear Si, I’m absolutely heartbroken to hear this. Sending you and everyone who knew Dave and his beautiful family so much love and strength at this horribly sad time. Hugs (sic)”
Singer and TV presenter Robson Green wrote: “Sending all my love to you brother at this incredibly challenging time. The spirit of David will always continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
Bearded celebrity cooks Dave and Si were well known as the Hairy Bikers.
They have presented numerous motorcycling travelogues together, in which they would travel around the UK, and further afield, on motorbikes and stop off to sample some local delicacies, as well as cook up some tasty treats themselves.
The pair’s first BBC show was ‘The Hairy Bikers’ Cookbook’, which was a mixture of cookery and travelogue, in 2004, and they went on to star in the likes of ‘The Hairy Bikers’ Food Tour of Britain’, ‘The Hairy Bikers: Mums Know Best’, and ‘The Hairy Bikers’ Asian Adventure’.
Dave revealed in May 2022 he had been diagnosed with cancer, and in June last year the star revealed he was “going the right way”.
He told The Times magazine: “I’m doing all right. It’s a work in progress. We’ve had some hard years but this one’s been… I’ve had 30 lots of chemo, spread over three weeks and then a week off. It’s going the right way.
“I’ve got one little bit [of chemotherapy] left. They seem to use this phrase now in cancer, ‘It’s ‘turned off.’ ’ So nobody says you’re in remission or anything. So everything is turned off apart from one little bit.
“And they think that they can turn that last bit off with radiotherapy. So the plan is I start radiotherapy next Tuesday. So that’s five sessions every other week.
“And then I go film in Scotland for two weeks, then go back on chemo. But that’ll be twice a month.”
Dave never disclosed which type of cancer he had, and admitted that was a deliberate move.
He only reluctantly went public with his diagnosis because of the impact of his treatment.

‘This is beyond a joke!’ Tony Blackburn furious as his favourite soap is replaced by football

OHMYGOSSIP — Tony Blackburn has been left furious after his beloved ‘Coronation Street’ was cancelled in favour of FA Cup football.
The 81-year-old legendary radio DJ took to X to let rip after he went to watch the ITV soap only to find it had been replaced in the schedule by a live FA Cup game between Liverpool and Southampton.
He wrote: “This is now beyond a joke for all us Coronation Street fans. More football this evening on BBC and ITV which means no Corrie (sic)”
Tony even had some helpful advice for TV schedulers, suggesting they put ‘Corrie’ on ITV2 for the die-hard fans to watch when there are big football matches on ITV1.
He added: “Why can’t they put football on other channels and leave us Coronation street fans alone or put Coronation street on say ITV2 we will follow it anywhere !!! (sic)”
While Tony shared his disappointment in the message, one ‘Corrie’ star was delighted to read Tony is such a soap super-fan.
Daniel Brocklebank, who plays Billy Mayhew in the soap, replied: “This has made my night! I grew up listening to you. I love it that you love us.”
Several other ‘Corrie’ supporters took to X to hit out at football replacing their beloved soap opera in the schedule.
One wrote: “Absolutely disgusting i was just getting ready to watch #corrie. Stuff footfall. (sic)”
Another posted: “Totally agree with you I’m sick of football on the main channels BBC as 3 channels and itv as 4 put it somewhere else (sic)”
One fan even branded Tony the “Ken Barlow of radio”.
Liverpool ran out 3-0 winners over Southampton on ITV1 on Tuesday night (28.02.24), while BBC One screened Manchester United’s 1-0 FA Cup win against Nottingham Forest, and ITV4 aired Chelsea’s 3-2 victory over Leeds United.

‘Waste of time’: Dame Joanna Lumley doesn’t own a mobile phone

OHMYGOSSIP — Dame Joanna Lumley does not own a mobile phone.
The 77-year-old actress explained that she has always “dreaded” the devices and chooses not to use them as they are a “waste of time”.
Speaking on The Radio Times Podcast, Joanna recalled: “Nobody had telephones or made telephone calls. You wrote letters. You waited for a letter and you wrote a letter back again. I dreaded telephones and I still don’t use the telephone now. I won’t use a mobile phone.
“No, I won’t receive calls. Won’t have it. Waste of life. Waste of time.”
The ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ star does have a landline at home for those who wish to get in contact with her but bemoaned how mobile phones stifle creativity as people are always “reacting” rather than coming up with original thoughts.
Joanna said: “I can’t stand being on call. I can’t see the point in it. How do you live your life if you’re always reacting? And how can you have your own fresh ideas and thoughts if you’re always responding to something?”
It is not the first time Lumley has spoken out against mobile phones as she previously admitted that she only owned one to allow her to pay for parking.
She told Prima magazine in 2017: “I think we are all trapped by technology into doing far more than we should. I do have a mobile phone, because I need it to pay for parking.
“But I will turn it on, let it warm up, use it to park, then switch it off.
“The thought of being called all day long and then coming home to 88 emails makes me shudder. We’ve all been turned into servants by technology.”

The ‘Hairy Bikers’ chef, who was best known for his TV partnership with best mate Si King, passed away “peacefully at home” on Wednesday night (28.02.24), two years after revealing he had been diagnosed with cancer, and his spouse Liliana Orzac has shared a series of photos of him in a heartfelt social media post.
She wrote on Facebook: “Rest in peace, my love. My wonderful, brave man! Till next time we meet!”
Shortly afterwards, Liliana – who married Dave in 2011 – changed her page’s cover picture to a photo of a single candle in tribute to the late star.
