Russell T Davies: It was a dream come true to cast Emma Thompson

OHMYGOSSIP — Russell T Davies says it was a “dream come true” to cast Dame Emma Thompson in ‘Years and Years’.
The 59-year-old actress will play Prime Minister Vivienne Rook, who is described as a mix between the former Mayor of London Boris Johnson and leader of the Brexit Party Nigel Farage, who users her celebrity and social media to gain popularity.
The former ‘Doctor Who’ screenwriter has revealed he took inspiration from real-life politicians for the new series, and said he felt it was important to show the “new breed” of politicians out there who are doing everything they can to be popular.
Speaking at the Radio Times BFI Festival, he said: “She’s using all those tricks that modern politicians do.
“The inspiration was all around me. I think it’s time to take these people seriously, really.
“There’s a whole new breed of politician who uses the media and uses public opinion and social media to become popular and to get votes.”
Davies says the fact that it’s a female politician gives the show a “complete new energy”
He continued: “There’s a bit of (Boris) Johnson in there, there’s a bit of (Nigel) Farage in there, but her being a woman gives it completely a new energy.
“She knows how to talk nonsense, when to tell the truth, she knows how to get a vote, she’s looming over the whole thing.
“Our lives are full of those people now and they’re terrifying and fascinating at the same time.”
Davies is honoured to have Thompson in the leading role.
He added: “Emma Thompson, you don’t just see her on television, and to cast her was a dream come true.”
The ‘Love Actually’ star will be joined by Anne Reid, Russell Tovey and Rory Kinnear in the saga, which is set in the future, something which Davies admitted was challenging with Brexit.
He said: “We are working so fast to get this transmitted. Thank you to BBC for showing it so fast. Episode one is the only one finished so far so we’re racing to get it.
“Because of the world. Because of the state of the world. I’ve been very nimble with it. Because it’s set five years in the future, I kind of refer to anything Brexity in the past.”
The first episode of ‘Years and Years’ will air on BBC One in May.

She wrote: “When I started EastEnders when I was 17years old. (I am now 26) I was lucky enough to be so well looked after and give the care that come with “fame” and what not. I went to therapy when I needed it and even when I didn’t feel I needed it and turns out, it always comes in handy and doesn’t mean you’ve lost the plot.
It means you are in control of your feelings and owning your stuff! Never be afraid to ask for help or even just go for a chat. You don’t need to be going through a terrible time to need guidance and help. (sic)”

The 30-year-old TV presenter – who won Celebrity Big Brother’s 11th series in 2013 and hosted ‘Big Brother’s Bit on the Side’ from 2013 to 2018 – is keen to front a programme which will explain what is currently going on in the news in simpler terms.
Rylan is quoted by the Daily Mirror newspaper as saying: “People have been saying, ‘You should do a politics show that is normal.’
“Not everyone is sitting around in suits discussing the Northern Ireland backstop, but a politics show a bit like ‘Bit on the Side’, where you explain what the backstop is.
“It’s the way you communicate it – I think there is an outlet for it.”
Rylan is captivated by the latest news and is currently hooked on getting Brexit updates from BBC Parliament.
He said: “It’s my new favourite reality show.
“Genuinely, BBC Parliament is my favourite. Now Brexit has changed to Halloween, which is laughable. I love it, it’s brilliant.”

Josh O’Connor says first day on The Crown was ‘the hardest’

OHMYGOSSIP — Josh O’Connor says his first day on the set of ‘The Crown’ was “the hardest” because he felt intimidated by the stellar cast.
The 28-year-old actor – who portrays Prince Charles on the Netflix show – says day one of filming was “physically demanding” and he was starring alongside “incredible actors” such as Olivia Colman, Helena Bonham Carter and Tobias Menzies.
Josh told RadioTimes.com: “There were more physically demanding scenes or emotionally demanding scenes, but the first day on set was the hardest because I walked into an unbelievable powerhouse of a series with incredible actors like Olivia and Helena and Tobias.
“There’s an endless list of brilliant actors. Walking in and feeling the weight of it, it was so difficult.”
But Josh admitted his nerves calmed when he realised everyone on set was very supportive and just encouraged others to do their best.
He said: “Then I opened my mouth and looked around and realised it’s just like ‘The Durrells’.
“A supportive team of creatives which makes such a difference and you get the best performances out of each other by supporting each other.
“That made the rest of the series a dream for that very reason.”
Josh also admitted everyone on set was delighted to see Olivia – who portrays Queen Elizabeth II on the Netflix drama – win a Best Actress Oscar for ‘The Favourite.’
He said: “We can’t stop talking about it.
“We’re so happy for her, it’s thoroughly deserved. It’s the first of many for her.”

Emma Thompson urges better treatment of writers in Hollywood

OHMYGOSSIP — Dame Emma Thompson wants better treatment for writers in Hollywood.
The 60-year-old actress explained that many big budget movies begin shooting before the screenplay is finished because they want to start filming immediately once a big star is attached to the project, and says writers often receive “lip service” about the quality of their work.
However, the ‘Sense and Sensibility’ star shared that “after 30 years of doing this” she believes writing the script during shooting “makes things so much more difficult” and insisted that she doesn’t want to make movies “with unfinished scripts”.
In an interview with the Guardian newspaper, she said: “One of the reasons is that they need stars – big stars – who work all the time and have to be fitted into timescales. What happens is there’ll be an idea for a story.
“It will be in development, and then suddenly two of the big stars come free, and everyone says, ‘right, let’s shoot it, we’ll work it out as we shoot’.
“One thing I know, after 30 years of doing this, is you can’t work it out while you shoot … It always ends up just making things so much more difficult in post-production.
“This is a tradition – and yet, when there is a good screenplay, and everyone recognises that it’s a good screenplay, there’s a lot of fuss and a tremendous amount of what can only be described as lip service to the value of good writing.
“And then everything continues as before. That’s what happens, and I don’t know how to change that. But I know that I don’t want to make films with unfinished scripts.”

Russo brothers say Endgame concludes ‘grandest experiment in movie history’

OHMYGOSSIP — Anthony and Joe Russo say ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is the “conclusion of the grandest experiment in movie history”.
The acclaimed directing duo – who helmed ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ – boasted that the highly-anticipated flick, which wraps up the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was a “unique opportunity” as filmmakers to “wrap up 11 different franchises”.
In an interview with the Upcoming, Joe said: “We knew it was gonna be probably the conclusion of the grandest experiment in movie history which is the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“There’s people all over the world who are so connected to these characters and they’ve spent so much of their time and their thought and their energy you know going on this journey for 11 years.
“It felt like a really, really unique opportunity as a storyteller to tell a story wrapping up you know 11 different franchises.”
As for how the directors dealt with the pressure of 22 films cumulating in this movie, Anthony revealed that it’s important the brothers “defer from our own excitement” and “block out the noise around the films.”
He said: “It’s interesting we can’t really – because these movies have become so significant to audiences and that’s something we certainly respect obviously and we value greatly – but for Joe and I we can’t get lost in that.
“We really have to defer from our own excitement, our own passion, our own fandom to help us, to guide us through this process in terms of the choices that we make as filmmakers and the narrative that we design so for us.
“We have to block out a lot of the noise around the films and really focus on the story that we’ve been telling, especially together on our own work that we started together on ‘Captain America: Winter Soldier'”.

The 31-year-old reality TV star was “extremely nervous” ahead of the ITV show, on which several stars, including Tom Parker, Jeff Brazier and Ashley Banjo, bared all to raise awareness of male cancers, and he was particularly “worried” about what people might say to him on social media.
He said: “I was extremely, extremely nervous but I can honestly say I think it was one of the best things I’ve ever taken part in.
“All the boys were petrified but once we did it we were so proud of ourselves.
“And the feedback we got, I was worried about the trolls and stuff like that, but even the trolls got behind and said, ‘You know what, fair play – respect, like that took a lot to do that.’ Do you know what I mean?”

Natalie Cassidy ‘fortunate’ for ‘strong’ Barbara Windsor during early career

OHMYGOSSIP — Natalie Cassidy feels “so fortunate” she had “strong women” such as Dame Barbara Windsor and Wendy Richard to look up when she was starting out on ‘EastEnders’.
The 35-year-old actress has portrayed Sonia Fowler on the BBC One show since 1993, and she has paid tribute to the soap matriarchs ahead of going to visit 81-year-old Barbara – who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2014 – today (15.04.19) for the first time since her diagnosis was made public.
She said: “I’ve seen her a couple of times, but I didn’t know then, it [her diagnosis] was still hidden.
“But after this I’m going round for a cup of tea, I can’t wait to see her. We’ve made this a morning to go and see her.
“I don’t really know what to expect, I just can’t wait to see her.
“But it has been on my mind at the weekend, ‘Will it upset me?’ Because she is a wonderful woman who helped me.
“We had those matriarchal women at work, Barbara and also Wendy Richard.
“They taught us to be professional, to know our lines. Strong women. I’m so fortunate that I had those women to teach me. It’s amazing.”
Natalie will join forces with her ‘EastEnders’ co-stars Jake Wood (Max Branning), and Adam Woodyatt (Ian Beale) to take part in the London Marathon on April 28th.
The group – who also include Barbara’s husband Scott Mitchell and ‘EastEnders’ star Emma Barton (Honey Mitchell) – are part of the running team Barbara’s Revolutionaries, who are running the 26.2-mile race on April 28 for Barbara to raise money for Dementia Revolution – and Natalie can’t wait for the big day.

“Once you get through the training, I’m excited for the day. Everyone says the atmosphere is amazing.”

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Shazam!’ has topped the box office for its second weeks in a row.
The DC Extended Universe film dominated the international box office again this week, generating $35.9 million from 79 overseas markets, after pulling in over $53.5 million in its first week.
The movie has now grossed over $95 million domestically and a further $221 million worldwide.
The best showings this weekend were in China, where it earned $4.9 million, and by the United Kingdom which drew in $2.9 million, closely followed by Mexico at $2.7 million and Brazil with $2.6 million.
Four new movies hit theatres with ‘Little’ performing the best of the group – finishing second in domestic ticket sales as it pulled in $15.5 million during its opening week with a budge of $20 million, while the reboot of ‘Hellboy’ finished third overall after posting $12 million domestically.
‘Shazam!’ stars Zachary Levi as the titular hero and follows 14-year-old Billy Batson who can transform into adult superhero named Shazam by shouting his name.
Following the movie’s huge box office success, executive producer Dwayne Johnson recently announced he hopes to start shooting his ‘Black Adam’ movie – which would be based upon the eponymous character, who is a recurring enemy of superhero Shazam in the comic book series – in “about a year”.
Johnson has been developing the project for the past 10 years but he has now revealed that filming is set to begin in the next 12 months, and he can’t wait to get started.
He said: “Those who know the comic books and the mythology of the comics of ‘Shazam!’ know that Shazam is connected to Black Adam.
“Black Adam is an anti-hero, or villain, who I cannot wait to play. I’ve been developing this, and it’s been with me and my DNA for over 10 years now. We should start shooting that in about a year. Very excited about that.”

J.J. Abrams refused to replace Carrie Fisher in Star Wars: Episode IX

OHMYGOSSIP — J.J. Abrams says it would have been “impossible” to recast Carrie Fisher’s role in ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’.
The actress passed away at the age of 60 in 2016 after having filmed her role as General Leia Organa in just two of the latest trilogy of ‘Star Wars’ movies, and it was previously revealed that her character would be brought to life in the final instalment – now subtitled ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ – by using previously unused scenes from the previous two instalments which were shot before her passing.
And now, 52-year-old director J.J. has said there was no other option when it came to the character, as there was “no way” he was going to recast her, or write the character completely out of the story.
Speaking at the 2019 Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, he said: “As I’ve said we couldn’t [fill the void left by Carrie.] Chris Terrio, the co-writer and Kathy [Kennedy] … as we all talked about how to move on.
“I mean she was the best. She was glorious. She was amazing. We all just loved her. I knew her from many years before as well. In Episode VII she was the greatest.
“It was impossible, no way, what are you going to do? You don’t recast that part or certainly have her disappear.
“The weird moment of having had a number of scenes from Force Awakens that had gone unused. Looking at those scenes and starting to understand that there was actually a way to use those scenes to continue the story so that it would be her.”
‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ is set to hit cinemas in December, and will mark the end of the mainline series of movies, however more spin-off projects are in the works.

Sean Gunn ‘knew’ his brother James was ‘cut out’ for Guardians of the Galaxy

OHMYGOSSIP — James Gunn’s brother Sean “knew from the beginning” that the director was “really cut out” for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’.
The 52-year-old director was recently re-hired by Disney to helm the third instalment in the Marvel trilogy after being fired when a string of controversial old Twitter posts resurfaced and Sean – who plays Kraglin in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films – insisted he always thought the franchise was “exactly the perfect kind of project” for his brother.
Speaking to ComicBook.com, Sean said: “I think I always knew from the beginning that my brother James was really cut out for the job.
“You know like I knew when he was hired that like, wow, this is exactly the perfect kind of project for him.
“So I had high hopes that we would make something good, you know? Then I read the script and I’m like, ‘This is fantastic!’
“If we’re able to actually make the movie as written on the page, make it pop the way that it does from reading the first script, we’re really going to have something here, and I think I was one of the most optimistic people on set from the word go.”
As for when he knew the ‘Guardians’ films were going to be a hit, the ‘Gilmore Girls’ star admitted that he was “always pretty confident” they “had something massive”.
He explained: “I always felt pretty confident that we would have something on our hands, at least that people liked, but I never ever imagined that it would be the massive, massive hit that it was.
“I never thought that they would be able to sell so much. That it would be marketed so well and that kids would identify so well to it and that people would compare it to their favourite 80s movies.
“All of the runaway success was something that I never really expected.”

The 62-year-old TV presenter “can’t remember” the last time he wore pants, and insists “a lot of blokes” also go commando.
During a discussion on ‘Good Morning Britain’, which he is co-hosting, about a new study which found 80 per cent of men kept their boxers for over 10 years, he said : “I have been [commando] forever. I can’t remember the last time I wore pants.
“I’ve said this a million times over the years. A lot of blokes don’t these days.”

Speaking about his fake tan fail last on the show last week, the silver fox added: “I could have walked around with my flies undone. That could have been seriously embarrassing.”
Last week, the presenter apologised for his “pumpkin-like” tan after a guest asked him if he had been on holiday to Barbados.
He trended on Twitter after he was seen on television with a vibrant orange glow.

Harry Redknapp had never been around gay man before John Barrowman

OHMYGOSSIP — Harry Redknapp had never “been around anybody who was gay” until he met John Barrowman on ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here’.
The 72-year-old football manager admitted that during his stint on the Australian jungle show, he spoke to people for the first time who “had nothing to do with football”, and confessed that prior to his friendship with the ‘Doctor Who’ actor he had never been around homosexual men.
In an interview with The Times Magazine, he said: “I met people for the first time who had nothing to do with football. For the first time I had to speak about things I had never spoken about before in my life. I had to understand their worlds.
“Well, I’ll be honest; I had never really been around anybody … I don’t know if we can say this, anybody who was gay.
“But then I met John Barrowman and I loved him. It was interesting to learn about his life.”
Despite the pair’s friendship, the star was taken aback during his time in the jungle when the actor revealed Harry’s son Jamie Redknapp was his “celebrity crush”.
John previously said: “He’s hot. He’s totally hot. When people say, ‘Who’s your celeb crush?’, I’d say, ‘Jamie Redknapp.’
“I actually told Harry in the jungle. I said, ‘I fancied Jamie when I was younger,’ and I don’t think he knew how to take it right away because he was just getting to know me.”
John and Harry’s fellow former campmate Emily Atack also confessed her love for Jamie during their time in the jungle, but the ‘Torchwood’ actor admitted it could’ve been “awkward” if the ‘Inbetweeners’ star ended up in a relationship with the football pundit, because John knows Jamie’s ex-wife Louise Redknapp, who has two sons, Charles, 14, and Beau, 10, with him.
He said: “If she [Emily] wanted to pursue that, she could. It could be awkward though because I know Louise.”

Ash Palmisciano’s Emmerdale nightmare

OHMYGOSSIP — Ash Palmisciano has been having nightmares about an ‘Emmerdale’ live episode.
The 29-year-old actor – who plays Matty Barton on the ITV soap – dreamt he had to say the opening line in a future live episode, but after missing his cue he had to climb through the window of the programme’s fictional pub, The Woolpack.
He wrote on Twitter: “Had a dream last night we were doing a Live Ep of Emmerdale I had the opening line, all I had to do was walk in the pub door but I missed the que & the guys were waiting in silence,so In panic climbed through the pub window, army crawled behind the bar & popped up!All on camera (sic)”
Ash recently admitted it is important for viewers of the ITV soap – which last aired a live episode in October 2012 to celebrate the show’s 40th birthday – to see the “highs, lows and vulnerability” his character Matty is going through to become himself.
The character – who was previously known as Moira Dingle’s (Natalie J. Robb) daughter Hannah Barton – is to undergo gender reassignment surgery, and Ash is hopeful the audience will learn a lot about his alter-ego in the scenes.
Ash – who is also transgender – said: “It’s extremely important for the audience to see the highs, the lows and the vulnerability it takes to become yourself.
“I hope they learn about his inner courage, and how he pushes himself to face his fears.”
