Jack Dee among new line-up of comics on upcoming 18th series of ‘Taskmaster’

OHMYGOSSIP — Jack Dee is among the line-up of comics on the upcoming 18th series of ‘Taskmaster’.
The stand-up, 62, will be joined by comedian Andy Zaltzman, 49, ‘Celebrity Gogglebox’ regular Babatunde Aléshé, 37, ‘Ghosts’ actress Emma Sidi, 33, and comic Rosie Jones, also 33.
It comes as Jack announced he will be touring with a new show ‘Small World’ from November 2024 to November 2025, which will see him pick apart inanities of life including Zoom etiquette, the latest radiator developments and careers advice offices.
Even though the new ‘Taskmaster’ line up has been confirmed, there is no release date for the show.
‘Taskmaster’ appeared on Channel 4 in 2020, after five years on Dave.
Its creator, 45-year-old comic and musician Alex Horne – who fronts the show alongside comic Greg Davies, 56 – told at the start of the year one of his dream ‘Taskmaster’ panellists would be “old school” stand-up Jasper Carrott.
He said on the ‘Always Be Comedy’ podcast about wanting to recruit the 79 year old: “There’s a few old school people who I’d love to have, like Jasper Carrott.
“I think he’s fine, he’s not chasing things, but I think Joe Pasquale would do it and I think he would be great.
“But it’s a big conversation because if you’re having Pasquale, you’re not having someone else and it’s 10 weeks – do you want 10 weeks of Pasquale?
“I don’t know Pasquale.”
‘Taskmaster’ is also launching a virtual immersive experience.
The attraction will be available in London from 18 September and will feature hosts Alex and Greg appear by video to competitors.
A website for the experience says: “You can compete to be crowned ‘Taskmaster’ champion. Based on the multi-award-winning hit TV show, this is your chance to step inside the iconic ‘Taskmaster’ house and take part in brand new ludicrous and infuriating tasks just like your favourite comedians.”
It adds competitors can pit themselves against friends and family “to battle for points and be crowned the winner” in a contest “led by bespoke video instructions from Little Alex Horne himself”.

Mad Max was created through limitations, says George Miller

OHMYGOSSIP — The ‘Mad Max’ franchise was borne out of “limitations”, according to George Miller.
The 79-year-old director has enjoyed huge success with the film franchise, and George has now admitted that it’s been shaped by a lack of resources.
George – who helmed the original ‘Mad Max’ movie back in 1979 – told Sky News: “The first ‘Mad Max’ was definitely borne out of limitations. It ultimately turned out to be very key to it.”
The acclaimed director explained that the first movie was originally written as a “contemporary story set in the city of Melbourne”. However, a lack of money meant that it was ultimately set in a “dystopian future”.
George added: “We couldn’t afford to have car chases in the middle of the street.
“We couldn’t afford [to have] the extra cars or put stuntmen in those cars. We couldn’t have extras in the street, trams or busses and we couldn’t use the buildings so we decided to set it a few years in the future.”
‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ – which is the latest movie in the money-spinning franchise – stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth.
Anya, 28, recently admitted that it was difficult to follow in the footsteps of Charlize Theron, who played Furiosa in 2015’s ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’.
The actress told Sky News: “I tried not to take on the pressure, only because you get paralysed with fear, like you can’t do anything, but I fell in love with Furiosa through Charlize and I feel like the character is so important that it just made me more adamant to fight for the humanity of her.”

George Lucas receives honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes

OHMYGOSSIP — George Lucas has received an honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
The 80-year-old filmmaker – who is best known for creating the ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Indiana Jones’ franchises – has been handed the prestigious accolade at the annual awards ceremony in Cannes, France, with George admitting that it’s “always great to be recognised”.
Speaking to French reporter Didier Allouch, George shared: “Obviously we have a lot of fans, but, in terms of ‘Star Wars’ and stuff, I don’t make the kind of movies that win awards.”
George feels proud that he decided to follow his own instincts as a filmmaker.
The acclaimed director – who served as chairman of Lucasfilm before selling it to The Walt Disney Company in 2012 – said: “I was just a student observer and I was bored to death. I said, ‘I don’t want to make Hollywood movies. I know how to do this.'”
Meanwhile, Sean Baker has won the Palme d’Or for ‘Anora’, the comedy-drama film that centres on an exotic dancer.
The 53-year-old filmmaker is actually the first American filmmaker to win the top prize at Cannes since Terrence Malick in 2011.
Sean accepted the award from Francis Ford Coppola, a two-time Palme d’Or winner.
He said in his acceptance speech: “Watching a film with others in a movie theatre is one of the great communal experiences. We share laughter, sorrow, anger, fear and hopefully have a catharsis with our friends and strangers. So I say the future of cinema is where it started: in a movie theatre.”
Elsewhere, Payal Kapadia has won the Grand Prix, the festival’s second-highest award, for ‘All We Imagine as Light’.

Anya Taylor-Joy loved the physicality of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

OHMYGOSSIP — Anya Taylor-Joy relished the “physical” elements of her role in ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’.
The 28-year-old star plays the titular character in George Miller’s prequel in the dystopian franchise and she was willing to push herself to the limit for the sake of the movie.
Speaking to SFX Magazine, Anya said: “The first conversation that George and I ever had was (him asking) how many of the stunts we want to do. I said, ‘Whatever you’ll let me do, I’ll do it.’
“I’ve always been very excited by the prospect of doing something as physical as this. My first day was being driven out to the middle of nowhere in California and being given a beaten-up car, and they’re like, ‘Have at it!'”
Anya explained that she was big fan of the film’s 2015 predecessor ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ and considered it an honour to take on such a special part after watching Charlize Theron portray Furiosa in the flick.
The ‘Queen’s Gambit’ actress recalled: “I saw that film as a fan. And I fell in love with it in that way. Genuinely, when I think back on my cinematic experiences, that one really stands out because I knew that I had seen a masterpiece. That film finished and I was like, ‘Wow, that’s really blown my mind.’
“Her arrival on our screens 10 years ago ushered in a very new era of the way that we represented women on screen and the kinds of roles that men decided that women could have, at the time anyway. So it feels wonderful to be able to continue her story and to have people care so much.”

Ekin-Su Culculoglu regrets appearing on Celebrity Big Brother

OHMYGOSSIP — Ekin-Su Culculoglu “should never have gone into the ‘Big Brother’ house”.
The 29-year-old beauty endured a disastrous run on ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ following her acrimonious split from Davide Sanclimenti, and Ekin-Su now acknowledges that she should’ve rejected the opportunity.
The reality TV star – who shot to fame on ‘Love Island’ in 2022 – told The Sun on Sunday newspaper: “I should never have gone into the ‘Big Brother’ house. I was angry, hurt, maybe a bit bitter, definitely insecure – ‘Big Brother’ is not where you go to heal heartache, let me tell you.
“I went into the show thinking that I could rebuild myself after everything that happened with Davide, but I came off worse. My guard was up.
“I blame myself for making a poor choice in my career. People could see that I wasn’t myself, and I can understand why they thought I was being fake.
“I never wanted to believe the allegations against Davide but people would tell me I was being cheated on all the time. I was so scared of being alone, and I didn’t know who the hell Ekin-Su was meant to be without him.”
Ekin-Su claims to have seen proof that Davide cheated on her.
The TV star also admitted to feeling emotionally broken by their break-up.
She said: “Did he actually cheat on me? Yeah. I have messages from one girl who told me that she had hooked up with him when we were together.
“Another time he left his laptop open. I saw messages, quite explicit messages, sexual ones, between him and the girl I’d met on New Year’s Eve.
“The messages talked about how much fun they’d had together the other night. Seeing those messages, confirming my worst fears, it broke something in me.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Helen Skelton has said “one last goodbye” to her marital home.
The 40-year-old TV star – who split from rugby player Richie Myler in 2022 – has taken to social media to reveal that she’s sold their former home in Yorkshire.
In an Instagram video – which features a fox in the garden of her marital home – Helen says: “Hello, you. I know it doesn’t feel that long ago I can remember the sound of foxes mating in those trees. Now we’ve got a little friend. Bye then! Saying bye to the house. (sic)”
Helen – who married Richie in 2013 – captioned the post: “One last goodbye old friend.”
Helen announced her split from Richie via a social media post in April 2022.
The TV presenter – who has Ernie, eight, Louis, five and 16-month-old Elsie with her ex-husband – revealed in her message that Richie had “left the family home”.
The former ‘Blue Peter’ presenter said on Instagram: “Very sad to say that Richie and I are no longer a couple. He has left the family home. We will be doing our best to co parent our small children. [broken-heart emojis] (sic)”
Helen subsequently confessed to feeling shocked by their break-up.
In her autobiography, ‘In My Stride’, Helen shared: “I was in shock.
“I know that following break-ups, people often say they didn’t see it coming and it sounds like a cliche, but that was me.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Eamonn Holmes plans to discuss his split from Ruth Langsford during an upcoming TV appearance.
The 64-year-old presenter and Ruth recently announced their split after 14 years of marriage, and Eamonn will address their break-up during an appearance on the GB News breakfast show.
A source told The Sun on Sunday newspaper: “Eamonn is always frank on camera and knows it will be odd for him to discuss the day’s news without mentioning his split so he’ll say a few words.
“He is putting on a brave face and will be the true professional he always is. Focusing on work will be a welcome distraction.”
Eamonn and Ruth, 64, announced their split on Saturday (25.05.24).
The celebrity duo – who previously co-hosted ‘This Morning’ together – are already in the process of finalising their divorce.
A rep said: “Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes have confirmed their marriage is over and they are in the process of divorcing.”
Meanwhile, Ruth previously revealed the origins of her romance with Eamonn, explaining that the TV star spotted her on an episode of ‘Countryfile’.
Ruth and Eamonn came face-to-face “a couple of years later” and the duo eventually fell in love.
She said on ‘Loose Women’ “He was at home watching ‘Countryfile’ and he said that ‘This woman popped up doing a piece to camera’, and I was doing a piece to camera on the back of a boat. When I met him a couple of years later, he asked me if I was on the back of a boat on a red jacket.
“So he spotted me!”

Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford ‘lived separate lives for two years’

OHMYGOSSIP — Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford reportedly lived separate lives for two years before their split.
The TV couple – who were together for 13 years before they tied the knot in 2010 – have started divorce proceedings and a new report now suggests the pair drifted apart over the last couple of years following the end of their stint presenting ITV’s ‘This Morning’ together in 2021 with The Sun newspaper reporting Eamonn has been keen to spend more time in his native Belfast.
A source told the publication: “Eamonn and Ruth’s relationship changed when they left ‘This Morning’. They started moving in different directions in their careers and their priorities started to change.
“Eamonn was desperate to return to Belfast, which he thinks of as home, but Ruth would never move. It became a bone of contention. As her ITV career continued, Eamonn went down another path and they became ships in the night.
“For the past two years they had led separate lives, professionally and personally.”
Eamonn and Ruth tied the knot in 2010 and have son Jack, 22, together. They announced their split via a representative on Saturday (25.05.24) in a statement which read: “Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes have confirmed their marriage is over and they are in the process of divorcing.”
The pair have yet to make any further comment on the news, but Eamonn, 64, is said to be planning to discuss the split during an upcoming TV appearance on the GB News breakfast show.

Stacey Solomon says she might give up her TV career one day and decide to become a stay-at-home mum

OHMYGOSSIP — Stacey Solomon might one day decide to become a stay-at-home mum.
The 34-year-old TV star – who has Zachary, 16, and Leighton, 12, from previous relationships as well as son Rex, four, and daughters Rose, two, and 15-month-old Belle with husband Joe Swash – believes that she is a “phenomenal” parent and that would remain that same if she decided in the next few years to give up her whole career.
Speaking on the ‘Glad We Had This Chat’ podcast, she told host Caroline Hirons: “I’m a phenomenal mum. I’m done with mum guilt. If you’re the mum who loves to be out at work, and I’m the mum who’s like, oh, I love playing at home. They’re both good mums. I don’t understand why one is better than the other in my opinion.
“Whatever phase of life I’m at, I might be this mum right now. But in two years time, if, let’s say, I’ve decided to stay at home and never work again, I might be like, I want to go back to work. Does that make me a bad mum? No, no, it makes me a human that my children can see that I am still a human being. Not just mum.
“I’m not a mythical creature with no feelings and no ambitions.”
The ‘Loose Women’ panellist was then asked if she has ever thought about having more children and failed to give a definitive answer but explained that Belle was a complete surprise anyway.
She said: “Oh, no. I have. I have and I haven’t [thought about more kids.] But even we were shocked at Belle because we weren’t planning to have another baby. We were definitely planning a break.
“Rex and Rose were only a couple of years apart and Rose was like six months old. But yeah, well, apparently you only need to have sex once and you’ll get pregnant.”

BBC to screen brand new Gavin and Stacey special alongside series finale

OHMYGOSSIP — The BBC will screen a behind-the-scenes documentary about ‘Gavin and Stacey’ when the sitcom returns for its finale.
The comedy was last seen in 2019 for a festive one-off, and writers James Corden, 45, and Ruth Jones, 57, recently confirmed a Christmas special is on the way, but the broadcaster will also air a special that will look back on the entire history of the show since it began in 2007.
A source told The Sun newspaper’s TVBiz column: “The Beeb view this as a momentous occasion and wanted to give Gavin Stacey a suitably auspicious send-off. The fact that the documentary will be made by Fulwell 73, which is co-owned by James and is a co-producer of the sitcom, means they’ll enjoy full access on set and get all the biggest chats.
“It is likely to be made in tandem with the show itself, filming the creative process of delivering the finale from the first to the last day.”
The much-anticipated episode of the sitcom – which also stars Mathew Horne, Joanna Page, Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb – will air on Christmas Day and it is expected that the documentary will air around the same time.
The news comes after it was claimed that Ruth and James had turned down a “tempting offer” from Netflix in honour of keeping the sitcom on its original broadcaster.
A source said: “They held conversations with Netflix who threw everything at them to land what is seen as a gem of British comedy.
“James, Ruth and the team were effectively offered a multi-million pound one-off deal, and were promised it would open the show up to a whole new international audience.
“Obviously it was tempting, but they felt ‘Gavin and Stacey’ belonged to the BBC — and the nation, really.
“The optics wouldn’t have been great had they ‘sold out’ so they went with their hearts, not the cash.”

Emilia Pérez director insists he was ‘completely unaware’ of Selena Gomez’s fame when he cast her

OHMYGOSSIP — Jacques Audiard was “completely unaware” of Selena Gomez’s social media fame when he cast her in ‘Emilia Pérez’.
The 72-year-old director is at the helm of the new musical crime comedy in which Selena – who is the most-followed woman on Instagram with 430 million followers – stars alongside Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Édgar Ramírez but insisted that he was “not familiar” with social media and was just keen to work with the world-famous actress.
He told Collider: “I was completely unaware of it. I’m not familiar at all with this social network, Instagram, TikTok generation. I have no access to all of that. I knew her from ‘Spring Breakers’ and the Woody Allen film she played in, [‘A Rainy Day in New York’].
“I just wanted to work with her for that. And when I met her in New York one morning in a cafe, I just knew instantly that I wanted to work with her.”
The movie – which premiered at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival – follows a woman asked to assist an escaped Mexican cartel leader undergo sex reassignment surgery to both evade the authorities and Jaques explained that his “intention” with the project all stemmed from a chapter of Boris Razon’s 2018 novel Écoute.
He said: “My intention, as I was saying, was about the transition identity, which was the chapter in the novel that gave me the idea for this film. I wanted the film to be set in Mexico, which I believe is a bit of a schizophrenic country, and these two elements, somehow the transition of Manitas Del Monte was Emilia Pérez, the change of gender was to be matched, in my opinion, with a change in the genre.
“Because I wanted it to be a soap opera and a musical comedy, a narcos film, something where you could not really grasp a label, something that was still very fluid. I really tried to do that in a film that was selected in Cannes, a drama that kept on changing and not being labeled.”

Glen Powell reflects on playing ‘a lot of different characters’ in Hit Man: ‘It’s the greatest joy’

OHMYGOSSIP — Glen Powell got to play “a lot of different characters” in ‘Hit Man’.
The 35-year-old actor stars in the leading role of Gary Johnson, college professor and tech guy turned undercover mole, in the new action romcom and explained that the role gave him the “greatest joy” because of how many different dynamics he got to explore on set.
He told ScreenRant: “I get to play a lot of different characters in this movie. It’s obviously for an actor, it’s the greatest joy to just show up and literally do what you do when you’re a kid, which is just put on costumes and accents and big teeth and play pretend.
The ‘Anyone But You’ star is joined on screen by Adria Arjona as his character’s love interest and noted that it every day he got to work with her had been made a “better day” when they got to be on camera together.
He said: “I think the one that obviously is the wish fulfillment of the movie is Ron. When you get to act across from Adria Arjona every day, she seemed to be really into Ron.
“So when you can have that effect on her, it really makes it a better day. But a lot of those characters were pretty bizarre and it was always fun. ”
Glen didn’t even get the chance to show his many characters to the director or the crew before the cameras started rolling.
He said: “I never got a chance to show it to Rick [Richard Linklater, director] or the crew before I got to perform them. So it was always a fun day because that always felt like I was getting to do a show and tell day for the crew on all those characters.”

Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn role is ‘mine’ and ‘authentic’

OHMYGOSSIP — Lady Gaga has declared her role as Harley Quinn is “completely brand new and really fun”.
The pop star takes on the part – previously played onscreen by Margot Robbie – in new comic book movie ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ opposite Joaquin Phoenix as the supervillain and the singer has now declared she’s determined to make the role her own.
She told Access Hollywood: “You know my version of Harley is mine, and it’s very authentic to this movie and these characters. And I don’t want to give anything from the movie away. I think it’s really something you have to experience in the theatre.”
Gaga went on to add the film will make the most of her pop star talents, explaining: “This film has music, it has dance, it has amazing acting in it … I’ve never done anything like I’ve done in this movie before, so it’s all going to be completely brand new and really fun.”
Robbie previously played Harley Quinn in three films – ‘Suicide Squad’ (2016), ‘Birds of Prey’ (2020), and ‘The Suicide Squad’ (2021) – and she previously admitted she’s thrilled to see Lady Gaga take over the part from her.
She told MTV News: “It makes me so happy because I said from the very beginning, all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, the way like Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor.
“It’s such an honour to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing. I think she’ll do something incredible with it.”
‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ is a sequel to 2019 movie ‘The Joker’ which featured Phoenix as Batman’s nemesis. It’s due to land in cinemas in October.

John Waters was ‘always making fun of his culture’ with his movies

OHMYGOSSIP — John Waters “always made fun of [his] culture” with his movies.
The 78-year-old director and screenwriter made his name with underground cult films in the 1970s before finding further success with the 1980s films ‘Hairspray’ – which featured drag queen Divine and made a star out of famed talk show host Ricki Lake in the years before it was adapted into a record-breaking Broadway musical – as well as ‘Cry-Baby’ and admitted that his work was always meant to be a parody of the world around him.
He told Flickering Myth: “What we did was make fun of the rules outsiders lived by. Divine was thought up to be Godzilla and Elizabeth Taylor put together.
“I always made fun of the culture I lived in, not my parents. Now the culture I live in has more rules than what my parents had. It’s a whole new world, it’s a surprising world.”
The ‘Pink Flamingos’ director noted that he had had some high school struggles and that his themes of teenage angst often come from that time but insisted that those who had an easy adolescence went “down hill” after graduation.
He said: “The first rebellion you ever see and then participate is the most exciting ever in your life. The first time you do culturally against your parents that they don’t approve of is what rock ‘n roll, teenage angst…everything is about.
“Perfect prom queens, football stars in high school, their life goes down hill [after that]. That’s it. That’s their peak.
“All the future leaders of the arts always had trouble in high school. But I’m also against home schooling, I think you have to learn to be out there and how to get through it.”

Stephen Mulhern looked out for cops for ‘Del Boy’ dad on market stall

OHMYGOSSIP — Stephen Mulhern spent his youth “looking out for the police” for his market seller father.

The ‘Catchphrase’ host, 47, revealed he and his brothers would be kept on watch for his trader dad on the streets of London, and likened himself and his father to ‘Only Fools and Horses’ wheeler-dealer Derek ‘Del Boy’ Trotter and his younger brother Rodney.
He told The Sunday Times: “My dad was a flypitcher on Petticoat Lane in east London. If you’re not sure what a flypitcher is, my dad was Del Boy from ‘Only Fools and Horses’ and I was Rodney.
“Crack of dawn, dad was out there selling novelty toys or them slice-and-dice vegetable choppers – me and my brothers looking out for the police.
“Dad would let me have a go on the stall, and that’s where I learnt how to perform in front of the hardest kind of audience: real people.”
When he was aged 11, Stephen became infatuated by magic, and went on to become a Redcoat entertainer at Butlin’s six years later.
The ‘Deal or No Deal’ host insisted he “didn’t get into magic to be cool”, and was spurred on by his love for the hobby.
He added: “Magic is still a huge part of my life. I do a season at Butlin’s every summer, honing my magic skills. Even if I’m going shopping, I’ll have a pack of cards in my pocket. And if someone stops for a chat or a selfie I’ll try out a new trick.
“What with your David Blaines and your Dynamos, magic has acquired a certain amount of cool. But I didn’t get into magic to be cool, I did it because I loved it.
“Other kids watched ‘Match of the Day’ and got into football, I watched Paul Daniels and decided to learn magic. And it was the magic that led me to be a Redcoat at Butlin’s. It gave me a career.”

Michaela Strachan hopes ‘Springwatch’ will spark conservation boom

OHMYGOSSIP — Michaela Strachan hopes ‘Springwatch’ will spark a boom in wildlife conservation.
The 58-year-old presenter, who hosts the BBC Two programme alongside Chris Packham, 63, and Iolo Williams, 61, is gearing up for the next series – which begins on Monday (27.05.24) – and has revealed she and her colleagues want to use it to “inspire” viewers to see and care for wildlife.
She told the BBC: “Our aim is to inspire our viewers, inspire them to see wildlife, care about it and then protect it.
“If you don’t know about wildlife, you’re not going to be interested. You’re not going to care about protecting it.
“So I mean, I think that’s what we really want viewers to take home from any series of the Watches that we do.”
The host added she hoped to provide watchers with some “wow moments” about newly-discovered nature facts.
She said: “Every series we learn something fascinating and something that surprises the experts.
“And I love it when we show those things and people go away with a wow moment from something that they would have totally overlooked.
“We want them to go away with wow moments and wow facts about things that they would never know about never had the chance to see.”
Chris agreed, and said he wanted to “delve deeply into the new science” of nature, and emphasised viewers would definitely be getting a look at something “that we’ve not seen before”.
He added: “The thing about ‘Springwatch’, as ever, is it will be a challenge and a surprise.
“Our mission is to bring people new stories from the nest that we follow and the other stories that we bring in and obviously we’ll be delving into the new science and the only thing that we can guarantee, or that we can’t say what it is, is that we will see something that we’ve not seen before, as that always happens.
“And we will therefore delve deeply into the new science and we’ll come up with new stories for people and you know, I can’t tell you what they’ll be because who knows what will unfold.”
