Prince Harry returns to his RAF roots for 75th anniversary celebration

OHMYGOSSIP — Prince Harry will present a new Colour to the ground fighting force of the RAF to celebrate its 75th anniversary.
The 32-year-old royal will be guest-of-honour when he visits RAF Honington, near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, to present the Colour to the RAF Regiment on behalf of The Queen on Thursday (20.07.17).
The RAF Regiment was formed in 1942 and is headquartered at RAF Honington.
The Prince trained at RAF Shawbury in Shropshire and served for 10 years in the Army, and will also meet families of servicemen and women on his visit to RAF Honington.
He will present The Firmin Sword of Peace to the RAF Police, give a short speech after the presentation of the new Queen’s Colour, and will officially open the station medical centre.
The prince will also tour the facilities at the airbase.
His visit will coincide with an afternoon at UK-wide brain injury charity Headway in a separate visit to launch a new Brain Injury Identity Card initiative and will meet brain injury survivors at the centre in Ipswich.
The events are part of Prince Harry’s royal duties to promote key causes, a responsibility he initially shunned in his twenties.
He said previously: “I spent many years kicking my heels and I didn’t want to grow up.
“I felt I wanted out but then decided to stay in and work out a role.”

Prince William promises Germany Brexit won’t ruin friendship

OHMYGOSSIP — Prince William has insisted the UK and Germany are the “firmest of friends” despite Brexit.
The 35-year-old future King said the two countries are “closely” linked and share the same traditional democratic values and he sees their cooperation with one another continuing when Britain leaves the European Union.
Speaking at a garden party hosted by Sir Sebastian Wood at the British Ambassadorial Residence in Germany, he said: “The United Kingdom and Germany proudly share the same values as open and democratic societies, and the same determination to champion those values and to defend them – not least through our very close defence and security partnerships.`’
He added: “Today, we share a fundamental interest in the peace and prosperity of the continent of Europe to which we both belong.
“This relationship between the United Kingdom and Germany really matters. It is the product of many years of working closely together.
“It will continue despite Britain’s recent decision to leave the European Union. I am confident we shall remain the firmest of friends.”
The Duchess and Duke are visiting Germany and Poland on the request of the Foreign Office, in a bid to show their appreciation for the UK’s European neighbours and back in May, Duchess Catherine kicked off what was dubbed the royal family’s ‘Brexit Tour’ charm offensive in Europe this year with a solo visit to Luxembourg.
Her visit also marked the 150th anniversary of the Treaty of London, which saw the European city confirm its independence in 1867.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to marry abroad?

OHMYGOSSIP — Prince Harry could “elope” with Meghan Markle to avoid a “showy wedding”.
The flame-haired Prince and the ‘Suits’ actress have avoided the spotlight as much as possible since they got together last summer but speculation is rife that they will get engaged soon and it’s believed they could shun a traditional royal wedding in a location like Westminster Abbey, London, and jet off abroad instead.
A source told US Weekly: “They could get married somewhere private and elope rather than have a showy wedding.”
Meghan was married before to talent manager Trevor Engleston and the couple said their vows in Jamaica in 2011 before they split in 2015.
She’s due to turn 36 years old in August, which will also mark the 20th anniversary of Prince Harry’s mother Princess Diana’s death, and it’s thought that he will also propose to his American girlfriend in August so that the month becomes a happier one in his life.
The source added: “He feels getting engaged will lift that gloom forever because he will be able to associate August with something joyful.”
And Harry is said to be keen on starting a family once he’s a married man.
The source said “He wants to get married and have kids. He’s smitten.”
Regardless of where the wedding takes place, Harry’s friends are convinced the pair will wed and his good pal Kirstie Ennis, a former US marine, dropped a hint about them getting married.
Asked whether she would be attending the “upcoming” wedding, Kirstie nodded and then said: “I don’t think I’m worried about the wedding. I’m worried about the after party.”

Canada’s Governor General touches Queen in breach of royal protocol

OHMYGOSSIP — Canada’s Governor General David Johnston has blamed a “slippy” carpet for breaching royal etiquette in Queen Elizabeth’s company.
The governor lightly touched the 91-year-old royal’s elbow as she walked down the steps at an event in London to mark Canada’s 150th birthday, however traditional “protocol” dictates that you should not touch the monarch unless she offers her hand.
He told CBC News: “Well I’m certainly conscious of the protocol.
“I was just anxious to be sure there was no stumbling on the steps.”
The Queen visited Canada House with the Duke of Edinburgh and Johnston said he thought it was necessary to “breach protocol” and help them to avoid an accident.
He added: “It’s a little bit awkward, that descent from Canada House to Trafalgar Square, and there was a carpet that was a little slippy, and so I thought perhaps it was appropriate to breach protocol just to be sure that there was no stumble.”
According to the royal website, there are “no obligatory codes of behaviour when meeting the Queen or a member of the Royal Family, but many people wish to observe the traditional forms”.
Some of those include a traditional form of greeting a royal, which for men is to bow from the head only while women carry out a small curtsy.
And the Queen should be adressed firstly as ‘Your Majesty’ and subsequently in conversation as ‘Ma’am’.
In addition, when a monarch offers their hand and you should return this not with a firm handshake, but just a touch.
Queen Elizabeth likes to adhere to royal tradition and once told Lewis Hamilton off for his bad table manners.
The 30-year-old Formula 1 champion was invited to dine with Her Majesty, but has revealed that he was reprimanded for not knowing the correct protocol.
Lewis said: “I got invited to a lunch and was sitting next to The Queen. I was excited and started to talk to her but she said, pointing to my left, ‘No, you speak that way first and I’ll speak this way and then I’ll come back to you.'”
Despite this telling off, Lewis went on to say that The Queen is “really cool”.

Prince Harry to present BBC Radio 4’s Today show

OHMYGOSSIP — Prince Harry is set to appear on BBC Radio 4’s news programme ‘Today’.
The 32-year-old royal will become the first member of the royal family to have a role in a news programme when he steps up to discuss a range of different news topics alongside day-to-day editor Sarah Sands over the Christmas period later this year.
The flagship current affairs programme runs from 6am to 9am six days a week, and the flame-haired royal reportedly made a secret visit to BBC’s Broadcasting House in London last week to meet with presenters Justin Webb and Sarah Montague in preparation for his broadcast.
A source told the Daily Mail newspaper: “This is being regarded as a major coup for the programme. Harry will be in charge of all three hours and so will have lots of time to fill with his various topics of interest.
“Harry wants to understand how the media works, just like his mother Diana did, so he got in touch and asked if he could come and sit in on some shows. Then it was suggested that he guest edits the whole thing down the line too. It’s like having royal work experience.”
Despite being the first royal to have a key role in a news programme, he isn’t the first to appear on radio, as his father Prince Charles read out the daily Thought For The Day segment during the same show last year, and his brother Prince William – along with his wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge – recently appeared on Scott Mills’ BBC Radio 1 show, where he promoted mental health charity Heads Together.
As of the time of writing it is unknown exactly when Prince Harry’s episode of ‘Today’ will air, but it is expected to be during the festive period of 2017.

Duchess Camilla named patron of loneliness charity

The 70-year-old royal marked the occasion of celebrating her milestone birthday on Monday (17.07.17) by officially become the royal patron of the charity, which aims to eliminate loneliness in older people by offering information, friendship and advice via its 24-hour confidential phone service.
The Silver Line Helpline was set up by Dame Esther Rantzen in November 2013, and the 77-year-old journalist is “thrilled” to have Camilla on board.
Speaking in a press release, she said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have Her Royal Highness’s support for our work and we would like to wish her a very happy 70th Birthday.
”The Duchess has an understanding and empathy for older people who are so often forgotten and undervalued in today’s busy world. She cares about them, and values them as we do. It is a real accolade for a young charity which is not yet four years old, and a tribute to the work of our team that we have been recognised in this way.
“We know that we transform the lives of people, many of whom spend their lives in solitary confinement in their homes, never asking for help from anyone else because they have too much pride, and don’t want, as they tell us, to become a burden.”
Meanwhile, the charity’s Chairman Professor Patrick Geoghegan has said the patronage of the Duchess will help to “strengthen” the charity’s work by raising awareness for the important cause.
He said: “I have spent my career working to help older people, firstly in the NHS and now as Chair of this crucial new charity. We at The Silver Line believe that there is no ‘sell-by date’ for older people, we treasure them as a crucial resource of life experience and unique memories.
“The Patronage of The Duchess of Cornwall will strengthen us in our work, and assist us to spread that message, that loneliness is a killer destroying not only quality of life, but mental and physical health. We are determined to work with other charities to fight the nation’s epidemic of loneliness blighting the lives of millions of older people.”
Since it’s launch, the charity has received 1.45 million calls, and answers an estimated 10,000 calls per week.

The royal couple, both 35, were treated to meal cooked by TV chef Damian Wawrzyniak in Gdansk on Tuesday (18.07.17) as part of their five-day royal visit to the European country.
Damian whipped up an array of classic Polish food for the pair, although he made sure to use British ingredients such as vegetables sourced from Cambridgeshire.

Prince William and Duchess Catherine visit Polish concentration camp

OHMYGOSSIP — Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, have visited a Nazi concentration camp during their trip to Poland.
The royal couple, both 35, were visibly emotional as they met with five survivors of the Holocaust during a visit to Stutthof concentration and death camp, where 65,000 prisoners – 28,000 of them Jews – died at the hands of the Nazis during World War II.
Two of the survivors, Manfred Goldberg and Zigi Shipper, were British citizens who had travelled over from London to return to the place of their incarceration for the first time.
William and Catherine – who were both visiting a concentration camp for the fist time – were also shown discarded shoes, clothes, and other personal possessions which were taken from prisoners, as well as a gas chamber where horrific deaths took place.
The royal couple paid their respects by placing stones at the camp’s Jewish memorial, accompanied by the survivors, who recited the El Maleh Rachamim, the Jewish memorial prayer for those who have died.
Speaking about returning to the camp, Manfred Goldberg said: “For me, returning to Stutthof is a seismic event. I have never been back to any of the places where I was imprisoned since I came to the UK in 1946. When I was first asked about visiting the camp, I hesitated. The mere thought of returning made me relive those years in my mind. But I decided I had to come and finally face the past.”
Meanwhile, Prince William and Duchess Catherine’s visit to the camp has been hailed as “incredibly poignant”, as it helps to “educate future generations” on the tragic events of the Holocaust.
Karen Pollock, chief executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust said: “Today has been an incredibly poignant and moving day. Their Royal Highnesses’ visit sends a powerful example to the world about the importance of remembering the horrors of the Holocaust and the importance of our work to educate future generations.”
Whilst survivor Zigi Shipper added: “When a royal goes and it’s put on the television or in the paper, people say ‘Why don’t we go? And that’s what we want. People should know that it wasn’t just Auschwitch-Birkenau, it wasn’t just Bergen-Belsen, look at all the other camps.”
Zigi added that the royal pair were “very moved” by what they saw.
He said: “You could see their faces. They were in pain.”

They will then make their way to Truro, where they will visit independent grocery store Great Cornish Food, which sells local produce.
Also in Truro, Charles will visit The Cove Macmillan Support Centre to meet staff, patients and cancer specialists and hear more about the assistance The Cove offers. He will also visit a ‘Look Good Feel Better’ workshop, which aims to provide support for women and teenagers suffering with the visible side effects of cancer treatment.

Prince William praises Poland’s ‘courage’

OHMYGOSSIP — Prince William has praised Poland’s “remarkable example of courage”.
The 35-year-old royal is currently on a five-day tour of the European country at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as part of an effort to maintain good relations with European countries in the wake of Britain’s decision to leave the EU, and whilst in the capital city of Warsaw, he gave an empowering speech about the ties between the two nations.
He said: “The links between Britain and Poland go back centuries, and are steeped in a rich history of cultural exchange and close commercial relations.
“Shakespeare’s plays were performed in Poland – and indeed in Polish – very soon after they were first staged in London.
“Around the same time, grain merchants from Poland were plying their trade into Britain, pathfinders for the many entrepreneurs and skilled workers who make the same journey in both directions today.
“We admire Poland as a remarkable example of courage, fortitude and resilience. You have survived centuries of assaults on your land, including partitions that were designed to wipe you off the map of Europe.
“In the 20th century, Poland displayed incredible bravery in resisting brutal Nazi occupation, not least the heroic uprising in Warsaw’s Jewish ghetto in 1943, and the Warsaw Rising of 1944.”
William – who is being accompanied on his trip by his 35-year-old wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and their children Prince George, three, and Princess Charlotte, two – then added he hopes Britain and Poland’s strong links continue, as they offer “promise and opportunity”.
He continued: “There is much to celebrate about the warmth of our relationship today. We are partners in NATO and, for the first time since the Second World War, British troops are stationed in Poland.
“And Polish is now the second most spoken language in the United Kingdom, with a generation of young people growing up who feel both British and Polish. Such links – diplomatic, military, cultural – offer much promise and opportunity for the future.”
The Prince concluded his speech by reading out a message from his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, who reflected on her last visit to Poland in 1996.
The 91-year-old monarch’s message read: “Prince Philip and I send our warmest good wishes to all of you attending this special Garden Party on the occasion of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first official visit to Poland.
“We have fond memories of our visit to Poland in 1996, when we experienced its world-renowned hospitality in Warsaw and Krakow. I am delighted that The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be able to experience this for themselves in Warsaw and Gdansk.
“In 1996, I spoke about the depth of British-Polish relations, dating back nearly a thousand years, and it gives me great pleasure that the friendship between our two nations and peoples has since gone from strength to strength. I have no doubt it will continue to prosper in the years to come.”

Duchess Catherine wants ‘more babies’

OHMYGOSSIP — Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, has expressed a wish to have “more babies” with her husband Prince William.
The royal couple, both 35, already have three-year-old Prince George and two-year-old Princess Charlotte together, but it seems the brunette beauty still wants to expand her brood.
Catherine made the lighthearted comment during her trip to Warsaw, Poland, on Monday (17.07.17) when she was given a cuddly toy designed to soothe tiny babies during a visit to an event for start-up tech companies.
Upon receiving the gift, Catherine told her husband: “We will just have to have more babies.”
The soft toys, from company Whisbear, are designed to comfort newborns by replicating the sound of the womb, responding to their cries to soothe them.
Julia Sielicka-Jastrzebska, who founded the company with her sister, said after giving the gifts to the Duchess that the beauty admired the bears, but noted they were made for children younger than George and Charlotte.
Julia said: “We gave the Duchess some presents for Prince George and Princess Charlotte. She said they should have more babies, and they laughed.”
Prince William and Duchess Catherine are currently on a five-day tour of Poland at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, as part of an effort to maintain good relations with European countries despite Britain’s impending exit from the European Union, and have brought their brood along on the trip.

Duchess Camilla gets new portrait for 70th birthday

OHMYGOSSIP — Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, has had a new portrait issued in honour of her 70th birthday.
The royal – who is married to Prince Charles – reached the milestone birthday on Monday (17.07.17) and to mark the occasion a new portrait of the couple has been released.
Taken in May 2017 in the Morning Room at Clarence House, the photo features both Camilla and Prince Charles. The duchess is wearing a navy blue dress coat with white embroidery by Fiona Clare in the image, whilst the Prince wears a navy suit, with a lighter blue shirt and tie.
The photograph was taken by renowned photographer Mario Testino, who famously snapped Prince Charles’ first wife, the late Princess Diana – who passed away after being involved in a fatal car crash in 1997 – just months before her death.
A spokesperson for the royal couple said in a statement: “The Duchess was photographed with The Prince at home at Clarence House by world renowned photographer Mario Testino who has photographed them both several times before. The image is one of several that was taken that day. Although these were not shot as official birthday portraits Their Royal Highnesses liked them very much and felt it would be nice to share them to mark the day.”
Whilst Mario himself added he was “honoured” to have been asked to take the photograph of the pair.
He said in his own statement: “I’m honoured to document Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall on this very important date. I first photographed The Duchess after her wedding to The Prince on a commission from British Vogue in 2006, and discovered a kind and beautiful person with a wonderful sense of humour. Doing this latest assignment to celebrate Her Royal Highness’s 70th birthday is a true honour.”
Duchess Camilla celebrated her birthday over the weekend, with a party held at the couple’s home, Highgrove House, in Gloucestershire.

Queen Elizabeth enjoys relaxing horse ride

OHMYGOSSIP — Queen Elizabeth has taken part in a relaxing horse ride after welcoming the Spanish royals last week.
The 91-year-old monarch was spotted enjoying some down time over the weekend by riding her horse on the grounds of Windsor Castle with her son Prince Edward, 53, and his daughter Lady Louise Windsor, 13.
Queen Elizabeth is no stranger to horse riding, as she first learned to ride one at the age of four after she was gifted with a Shetland pony named Peggy.
In recent years, the Queen has been forced to cut down the amount of time she spends with her beloved horses, but she still makes an effort to tend to her stables and takes a keen interest in the horses and ponies that reside there.
The relaxing ride comes after she was tasked with hosting Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia last week, when they visited London and were welcomed with a moving speech delivered by the Queen in which she called for the two countries to stick together “whatever challenges arise” in the future.
She said: “The relationship between our two nations is dynamic and modern. We are NATO allies, striving together to improve security in Europe and across the globe.
“Our armed forces are currently working side by side in the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force, led last year by Spain and now by the United Kingdom.
“We remain deeply committed to the common defence and freedom of our countries.
“There are so many facets to our shared experiences and close connections.
“Indeed, the lives of our peoples themselves are more intertwined than ever before. Thousands of Spanish students are studying at British universities, and Spanish scientists are working with British colleagues to tackle disease.
“We are also significant investors in each other’s economies, with the United Kingdom being the principal European recipient of Spanish overseas investment.
“A relationship like ours, founded on such great strengths and common interests, will ensure that both our nations prosper, now and in the future, whatever challenges arise. With such a remarkable shared history, it is inevitable that there are matters on which we have not always seen eye to eye.
“But the strength of our friendship has bred a resilient spirit of cooperation and goodwill.”

Prince William and Duchess Catherine honour fallen Polish soldiers

OHMYGOSSIP — Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, paid their respects to fallen soldiers during the first day of their visit to Poland on Monday (17.07.17).
The royal couple, both 35, were joined by Polish president Andrzej Duda and his wife Agata on an exclusive tour of the Warsaw Rising Museum where they honoured the lives of the estimated 200,000 Poles who died in an ill-fated 63-day rebellion against Nazi occupation in 1944.
The museum documents the Polish resistance Home Army’s brave fight between August 1 and October 2, 1944 in which they tried to liberate the capital.
The battle – known as the Warsaw Rising – unfortunately ended in failure for Polish forces, after Soviet forces camped outside the capital refused to intervene as they were waiting to see the anti-communist resistance movement eliminated before they moved in to battle the Nazis.
Prince William and the president lit candles in the museum underneath a bell on a wall of remembrance which lists the name of every soldier who died in the lengthy battle.
The royals also stopped to honour a list of 34 British servicemen who were shot down and died trying to fly supplies into the resistance fighters.
During their visit to the Warsaw museum, William and Catherine also got the chance to meet with four Polish Second World War veterans, two of whom fought in the uprising, and another two who escaped from Poland to join Allied forces and take part in military campaigns.
One veteran, 98-year-old Colonel Edmund Brzozowski, joined the Polish resistance and was captured by Stalin’s forces early in the war and imprisoned in Russia, before being able to join up with British forces in the Middle East when the Soviet Union changed sides.
Another veteran, Major Marian Slowinski, also 98, fought with Allied troops in Normandy and in the liberation of Belgium.
