OHMYGOSSIP — The Weeknd has become the first artist in Spotify history to reach 100 million monthly listeners.
As of February 27, the global megastar set a new streaming record.
The feat comes days after Ariana Grande made her music return on The Weeknd’s ‘Die For You’ remix.
The pop superstar – who has not released an album since 2020’s ‘Positions’ – teamed up with her friend and collaborator on the new version of his 2016 track from his album ‘Starboy’.
The 29-year-old star and 33-year-old The Weeknd – whose real name is Abel Tesfaye – first teamed up on 2014’s ‘Love Me Harder’ from Ariana’s album ‘My Everything’. And in 2020, they duetted on ‘Off The Table’ on her LP ‘Positions’, while Ariana wowed on a remix of ‘Save Your Tears’ from his record ‘After Hours’.
Ariana is currently working long hours filming the two-part movie adaptation of smash hit Broadway musical ‘Wicked’, in which she plays Glinda.
The ‘Dangerous Woman’ singer recently reassured fans she is still very much a singer and reminded them of her vocal prowess on a rendition of ‘Over the Rainbow’ from 1939 classic ‘Wicked’.
After being asked by a TikTok user why she is no longer a singer, she replied: “Literally on set filming two musical movies all day every day.”
In the video, the ‘thank u next’ hitmaker – who initially covered the torch song made famous by Judy Garland as a charity single in May 2017 at her One Love Manchester benefit concert after 22 of her fans were killed in a terrorist attack following her concert in the North of England – was wrapped in a pink hooded blanket in an attempt to conceal her Glinda costume and hairdo.
She captioned the post: “wanted to sing you a little something but don’t want to sing anything that is not “Ozian” at the moment 🙂 keeping to my little bubble for now … done with lots of love (sic)”

OHMYGOSSIP — Post Malone has announced two nights at London’s O2 arena as part of the European leg of his ‘Twelve Carat Tour’.
The ‘Go Flex’ star is set to kick off the 13-date jaunt on April 22 at Oslo’s Telenor Arena, before heading to Stockholm, Copenhagen, Antwerp, Zurich, Cologne, London, Dublin, Glasgow, Birmingham, and Manchester, and wrapping up the run at Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome on May 19.
Tickets will be available starting with local presales from Wednesday (01.03.23) at 12pm local time. The general on-sale begins on Friday (03.03.23) at 12pm local time on livenation.co.uk.
Rae Sremmurd will support the Grammy-nominated star at all but one show.
The ‘Circles’ hitmaker powered through the North American leg last year, despite battling with breathing problems and injuries.
The 27-year-old rapper – whose real name is Austin Richard Post – had to postpone his show at the TD Garden in Boston on September 24, 2022, after finding he was “unable to move”, but he returned to the stage in Cleveland, Ohio, a few days later.
Ahead of his performance, he tweeted: “Cleveland, I will be singing the F*** outta some songs tonight see y’all tonight (sic)”
The star took to Instagram earlier that week to reveal he was having difficulty breathing.
He wrote on Instagram: “I’m having a very difficult time breathing, and there’s like a stabbing pain whenever I breathe or move. Boston, I love y’all so f******much. On tour, I usually wake up around 4 o’clock PM, and today I woke up to cracking sounds on the right side of my body.”
The ‘Sunflower’ hitmaker added that he had felt “so good” the night before but admitted something had changed overnight and reassured fans that their tickets would remain valid for a rescheduled date.
He added: “I felt so good last night, but today it felt so different than it has before.”
Just days earlier, Post had injured his ribs after crashing through a hole in the stage at his St. Louis concert after he tripped and fell during a performance of ‘Circles’.
In a video message, he said: “Next time I’m around this way, we’re gonna do a two-hour show for you to make up for the couple songs that we missed.”
Recalling how he took a tumble, he said: “Whenever we do the acoustic part of the show, the guitars on the guitar stand goes down and there’s this big a** hole, so I go around there and turn the corner and bust my a**. It winded me pretty good, it got me pretty good.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Ed Sheeran appears to have confirmed the title of his next album.
The Grammy winner has reacted to a tweet from a fan about his new LP being called ‘Subtract’, which would make sense following 2021’s ‘Equals’, 2017’s ‘Divide’, 2014’s ‘Multiply’ and 2011’s ‘Plus’.
Alongside a clip the chart-topper posted of waves removing a line from the ‘=’ symbol written in the sand to turn it into ‘-‘ (‘Subtract’), Ed tweeted on Thursday (27.02.23): “Getting excited now?”
The album teaser came as Ed played another concert for poorly children at a hospital in Australia amid his tour Down Under.
The ‘Shape of You’ hitmaker performed at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital on Tuesday (27.02.23).
He also performed for young fans at Queensland Children’s Hospital last weekend.
The pop megastar recently returned to social media after taking a break due to “turbulent” times in his personal life.
The 31-year-old singer – who has two daughters, Lyra, two, and eight-month-old Jupiter, with wife Cherry Seaborn – admitted some posts on his social media became “a bit boring” after a tough time, but he insisted “things are looking up” now.
He said: “I realise I haven’t been that engaged in my social media or fanbase online over the last couple of years and the things that have been posted on this account might have got a bit boring. I’m sorry, that’s my fault.
“The reason I’m making this video is, just being totally honest, I’ve had some turbulent things happening in my personal life so I just didn’t really feel like being online and pretending to be something I’m not when I wasn’t really feeling like that.
“I know that sounds weird, but hence I’m making this video to say things are looking up and I’m back online.”
Ed told fans some “weird s***” would be posted on his Instagram account going forwards, but stumbled during his sentence.
Despite tripping over his words slightly, the ‘Bad Habits’ hitmaker insisted he wasn’t going to make another video after attempting “about 50”.
He added: “So you know, weird s*** is gonna start being posted here … I’ve made this video about 50 f****** times. I’m not making another one!”
On November 4th, Ed told fans he was “signing off” Instagram until 2023.
He posted: “Signing off now until 2023. See you in the new year. Much love, Ed x (sic)”
In February 2022, Ed’s friend Jamal Edwards – who helped to launch his career with his urban music platform SBTV – passed away aged 31 of a heart attack after taking recreational drugs.
Last month, he relaunched Jamal’s SBTV relaunch ‘F64’, the platform’s flagship freestyle rap series, and to kick it off, he shared the freestyle of the same name dedicated to his late friend.
Ed raps: “Yo Jam, this is a letter to you. It’s been a while, but it’s been hard for me to get in the booth.
“Since we last spoke, I’ve become a father of two, trying to live life with a smile but that’s been harder to do.
“All I want to do is talk about you, but these tears won’t let me talk about you. We should have known that we’d be lost without you.
“Therapy sessions digging and depression, I got a life full of blessings but this just breaks my f****** heart.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Ellie Goulding has been forced to postpone her new album for a second time.
The ‘Let It Die’ hitmaker – whose fifth studio album ‘Higher Than Heaven’ was originally set to be released in February before being pushed back to March 24 – has been delayed again, this time due to issues in “sourcing” material for physical formats.
In a lengthy statement on Instagram, she wrote: “As you know, making these products as green as possible is incredibly important to me so we’ve worked really hard to stick to that promise.
“As a result and due to delays in sourcing these products, we have to push back the release ever so slightly to April 7 just so we can get these beautiful products to you as soon as humanly possible.
“Thank you ever so much for your patience and I love you all. Ellie x (sic)”
When she first delayed the album – the follow up to 2020’s ‘Brightest Blue’ – Ellie teased “some exciting opportunities” which she is looking forward to sharing with her supporters.
She said in January: “To my incredible fans – I’m sorry to announce that we’re delaying the release of Higher Than Heaven to March 24.
“I know you’ve all been so patient with me but we’ve had some exciting opportunities appear behind the scenes which I cannot wait to share with you in due course.”
Speaking last year, Ellie reflected on the project as a whole and explained how the pandemic had impacted the writing and recording process.
She said: “There was definitely a darkness about [the past two years] that was palpable in the studio, with everyone having gone through it differently.
“I think for that reason, nobody wanted to sit and agonise over some relationship or some drama. So that’s how this album came together.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Justin Bieber’s world tour has seemingly been cancelled.
The ‘Never Say Never’ hitmaker’s ‘Justice’ concert dates – which were previously postponed due to the 28-year-old star’s health problems – have been removed from his official website, while ticketing sites such as Ticketmaster have also updated their pages to reflect that the gigs have been axed.
Ticketholders for The O2 in London have received emails from provider AXS to advise them the show has been cancelled and they will automatically receive refunds in the coming days.
Screenshots shared on Twitter from the AXS email read: “We regret to inform you that the Justin Bieber shows planned to take place at The O2 arena have been cancelled. We understand you will be disappointed and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”
Justin has yet to comment on the news.
The ‘Love Yourself’ hitmaker first postponed his tour in June 2022 after revealing to fans he had been stricken with partial facial paralysis due to Ramsay Hunt Syndrome.
He said in an Instagram video: ““Obviously as you can probably see with my face. I have this syndrome called Ramsay Hunt syndrome and it is from this virus that attacks the nerves in my ear and my facial nerves and has caused my face to have paralysis.
“Can’t believe I’m saying this. I’ve done everything to get better but my sickness is getting worse.
“My heart breaks that I will have to postpone these next few shows (doctors orders.) To all my people I love you so much and I’m gonna rest and get better.”
Pointing to the left side of his face and showing he couldn’t blink or smile, he added: “So there is full paralysis on this side my face. So for those who are frustrated by my cancellations of the next shows, I’m just physically obviously not capable of doing them. This is pretty serious as you can see.
“I wish this wasn’t the case but obviously my body is telling me that I’ve got to slow down and I hope you guys understand.
“I will be using this time to rest and relax and get back to 100 percent so that I can do what I was born to do.”
And then in September, a day after performing at the Rock in Rio festival in Brazil, Justin again announced he wasn’t ready to go back on the road.
He said: “After getting off stage, the exhaustion overtook me and I realised that I need to make my health the priority right now.
“So I’m going to take a break from touring for the time being. I’m going to be ok, but I need time to rest and get better.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Ed Sheeran’s new album contains his “deepest darkest thoughts” after finding out his wife Cherry Seaborn had a tumour while pregnant with their second child.
The pop star has just unveiled his LP ‘Subtract’, the final in his decade-long mathematical series – which follows 2021’s ‘Equals’, 2017’s ‘Divide’, 2014’s ‘Multiply’ and 2011’s ‘Plus’ – accompanied by his diary entry from February 2022, in which he wrote about his spouse having to delay getting treatment for a tumour because she was pregnant with the couple’s daughter, Jupiter, who they secretly welcomed into the world in May 2022.
The ‘Bad Habits’ hitmaker – who also has Lyra Antarctica, two, with childhood sweetheart Cherry – admitted writing the record acted as therapy for him through the extremely dark period in his life, which also saw his late friend Jamal Edwards pass away suddenly and his mental health spiral.
Ed also found himself having to fight for his “integrity and career as a songwriter” at court during a lengthy copyright trial over ‘Shape of You’.
In the candid statement, he said: “I had been working on Subtract for a decade, trying to sculpt the perfect acoustic album, writing and recording hundreds of songs with a clear vision of what I thought it should be. Then at the start of 2022, a series of events changed my life, my mental health, and ultimately the way I viewed music and art.
“Writing songs is my therapy. It helps me make sense of my feelings. I wrote without thought of what the songs would be, I just wrote whatever tumbled out. And in just over a week, I replaced a decade’s worth of work with my deepest darkest thoughts.
“Within the space of a month, my pregnant wife got told she had a tumour, with no route to treatment until after the birth. My best friend Jamal, a brother to me, died suddenly and I found myself standing in court defending my integrity and career as a songwriter. I was spiralling through fear, depression and anxiety.
“I felt like I was drowning, head below the surface, looking up but not being able to break through for air.”
The ‘Thinking Out Loud’ hitmaker, 32, says the album is him “opening the trapdoor into my soul” and he warned fans that they might not “like” what they hear.
He continued: “As an artist I didn’t feel like I could credibly put a body of work into the world that didn’t accurately represent where I am and how I need to express myself at this point in my life. This album is purely that. It’s opening the trapdoor into my soul. For the first time I’m not trying to craft an album people will like, I’m merely putting something out that’s honest and true to where I am in my adult life.”
Ed concluded: “This is last February’s diary entry and my way of making sense of it. This is Subtract.”
The father-of-two also shared a moving video of himself walking along the beach as the song titles were shown written in the sand. At one point, he’s seen climbing an unsteady ladder that falls apart on him.

‘Subtract’ is released on May 5.

OHMYGOSSIP — SZA was “shocked” that Phoebe Bridgers agreed to feature on ‘Ghost in the Machine’.
The ‘Kill Bill’ hitmaker has admitted she thought the 28-year-old singer-songwriter would turn down the collaboration for her album ‘SOS’ and she couldn’t believe how much she “downplayed” her contribution.
Speaking to Alternative Press magazine, she said: “I didn’t think that [Bridgers] would come to the studio, let alone actually get on the song, so I was shocked.
“She was so f****** nice, and we had the best time — she’s hilarious. I had no idea she was that funny. She literally downplayed what she did so crazy … I couldn’t believe it. She downplayed it even when she was done. She was like, ‘Yeah, I don’t know. ’ I was like, ‘This is incredible. You’re insane.’ But she’s just great. She’s great! I love when she’s speaking like, ‘You’re not wrong, you’re an a**hole.’ I love that … She just screams iconic vibes.”
The 33-year-old star – whose real name is Solána Imani Rowe – also vowed to continue making music that is outside of the R+B “box” people place her in.
She said: “I’m always gonna throw a bunch of wild cards. People didn’t pay attention when it was ‘Drew Barrymore’ or ‘Prom’.
“I never thought like, ‘This is a phase.’ I’ve always combined s*** together. It was never just one thing. I just think I have a bigger profile now, and people are like, ‘OK, you’re supposed to get in a box and stay in a box.’ You wanna call me R+B so bad because I’m Black, but you don’t get to define me, though. OHMYGOSSIP — Metallica will release their next single, ‘If Darkness Had A Son’, today (01.03.23).
The heavy metal icons – James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Rob Trujillo, and Kirk Hammett – invited fans on TikTok to duet with them on the new track from their upcoming album ’72 Seasons’.
They captioned a clip of the four band members rocking out to the tune on Tuesday (28.02.23): “#duet with @metallica #IfDarknessHadASon out tomorrow. #72seasons #metallica #duetchain (sic)”
The track follows ‘Lux Æterna’ and ‘Screaming Suicide’.
The full album will follow on April 14.
Meanwhile, Metallica’s latest ‘Helping Hands’ benefit raised $3 million (£2.4 million) for charity.
The band brought out St. Vincent and had Greta Van Fleet perform at the fundraising event for their All Within My Hands non-profit at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on December 16.
Peter Delgrosso, executive director at All Within My Hands, said: “The funds raised from the ‘Helping Hands Concert and Auction’ will have a lasting impact on All Within My Hands’ ability to grow our Metallica Scholars initiative, combat hunger, and aid in response to natural disasters.
“The Los Angeles event was the largest fundraiser in our history, and we profoundly appreciate the generosity of everyone involved. We could not have achieved these results otherwise.”
Among the organisations to benefit from the money raised will be Baby2Baby, First Star, Feeding America, World Central Kitchen, mikeroweWorks Foundation and The Skatepark Project.
The band’s star-studded 2021 covers album ‘The Metallica Blacklist’ made a whopping $1 million (£824,430).
Metallica and their collaborators – including Miley Cyrus, Phoebe Bridgers and Chris Stapleton – have chosen the non-profits they wish the money to go to.
Miley chose her Happy Hippie Foundation, which she founded in 2014 to offer “homeless youth, LGBTQ youth and other vulnerable populations with consistent support.”
Phoebe opted for RAINN (The Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network), and Chris and his wife Morgane picked their Outlaw State Of Kind fund, which benefits “a variety of causes close to their heart.”
Metallica’s All Within My Hands Foundation previously donated $100,000 to those affected by California’s devastating wildfires in 2018.

OHMYGOSSIP — The Who are set to give a one-off performance with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra at the Royal Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.
The ‘Pinball Wizard’ hitmakers – Roger Daltrey, 79, and Pete Townshend, 77 – and their band will play in the grounds of the royal residence for the final date of their ‘The Who with Orchestra’ 2023 UK tour on August 28.
Former Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft and rockers The Lightning Seeds will support the legendary rock band.
Fans can expect to hear songs from The Who’s iconic albums ‘Tommy’ and ‘Quadrophenia’, alongside fan-favourites and songs from their 2019 album ‘WHO’.
Guitar hero Pete commented: “Very pleased and excited for The Who to be one of the first artists to perform at the Country Home of the British Royal family on The Sandringham Estate.
Opening up the Estate to large-scale concerts is a fantastic way of keeping us uplifted and enjoying congregation at what I’m sure will be a fabulous summer celebration. We can’t wait!”
Giles Cooper of Heritage Live said: “It’s been an ambition of us all at Heritage Live to stage a concert for the legend that is THE WHO. After unveiling his latest album ‘Subtract’ – which is due for release on May 5 – on Wednesday (01.03.23), the ‘Castle on the Hill’ hitmaker has announced a small batch of dates, kicking off on March 23 in Manchester, taking in two nights at London’s The O2 arena on March 24 and 25 before heading to Glasgow and Dublin on March 28 and March 30, and wrapping in Paris on April 2.
The mini tour is in support of the first single from the follow-up to 2021’s ‘Equals’, which is yet to be announced.
They will be the only shows the Grammy winner will play in the UK this year.
Fans can pre-order the album before 9am on March 7 via Ed’s official website (edsheeran.com) to gain early access to the ticket pre-sale.

OHMYGOSSIP — Shania Twain wants ABBA’s Bjorn Ulvaeus to help her if she ever does a musical based on her songs.
The 57-year-old Canadian superstar – whose hits include ‘Man! I Feel Like A Woman!’, ‘You’re Still The One’ and ‘That Don’t Impress Me Much’ – recently teamed up with Netflix on the documentary ‘Shania Twain: Not Just a Girl’ and she has revealed there is “interest” in her turning her music into a stage show.
Speaking to ‘Dancing Queen’ hitmaker Bjorn on ‘Bjorn from ABBA and Friends’ on Apple Music Hits, she said of a potential musical: “Yes, there actually is an interest in doing a musical.”
She continued: “I just want to take a second to just say how much ABBA music has inspired me in the sense of broadening my whole… I grew up listening to three-chord songs, very simple, a lot of storytelling. But musically, when I heard ABBA, I’m like, ‘This is another planet of arrangements.’ And the time signature changes just went to so many unexpected places.”
When the 77-year-old music legend suggested Shania should give the musical thing a go, she replied: “Yes. Well, listen, I’ll probably need some help. You have all this experience now, I may have to call you back on that.”
ABBA not only have a hit Broadway and West End musical in ‘Mamma Mia!’, but they also have two blockbuster musical movies, a digital avatar show in ‘ABBA Voyage’, and an immersive experience that sees fans transported to Greece and dine on Greek food while the cast of ‘Mamma Mia! The Party’ entertain them.
Meanwhile, Shania recently admitted performing at Coachella with Harry Styles was “one of the highlights” of her career.
The singer was a surprise guest when the former One Direction hunk headlined the California festival last April, joining him on stage to perform her own tracks ‘Man! I Feel Like a Woman!’ and ‘You’re Still the One’, and she found it to be a very special evening.
Shania told how she first met the ‘As It Was’ singer backstage at one of his concerts and she quickly became friends with the “sweet” star.
She told Today.com: “He was just really on his way up when I first met him.”
Shania admitted she finds it “very rewarding” to have fans of Harry’s generation.
She said: “He’s one of these kids that’s part of the generation that 25, 30 years ago were four, five, six, years old in the audience.
“Now it’s this full-circle moment where they are old enough now to speak for themselves and they can come and see me without the parents and express their admiration for my music and to thank me for the inspiration.
“It’s very rewarding for me to still be doing this and to hear their gratitude in person.”
The ‘From This Moment On’ singer – who released her album ‘Queen of Me’ last month – recently teased she is planning to work with Harry again in the future.
Asked about the possibility, she said: “Well, not on this album, but in the future, I would say, ‘Yes’. I’m going to hold Harry to that.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Pink has promised that there will be exciting stunts on her summer tour.
The ‘Trustfall’ hitmaker was involved in a serious accident back in July 2010 when she was pulled into the air and slammed into a safety barrier when an aerial acrobatic stunt went wrong during a concert at the Easy Credit Stadion in Nuremberg, Germany.
However, Pink has vowed to continue with her bold stunts on her ‘Summer Carnival’ tour this year, even though she is now in her 40s.
Speaking to Music Week, Pink, 43, said: “The insurance company’s like, ‘You’re getting older, and I’m like, ‘Yeah, well, you’re cutting the cheque – look I can still do a full split!’”
The singer’s commitment to put on the biggest and best show she can comes from her desire to give her fans their money’s worth, as Pink hates it when she goes to watch an artist perform and they are just phoning it in.
She added: “You can tell when you go to a show and the artist cares, and you can tell when they don’t. I’ve been to those shows when they don’t and it’s offensive- it’s offensive to me that you would take somebody’s money.
“Don’t just take people’s money then go up there with your hand is in your pocket sitting on an amp singing a song that I loved as a child. Don’t ruin my life, f*** you. That’s how I feel about it. And I’ve been to those shows, and I hate them. I won’t listen to their songs anymore.”

OHMYGOSSIP — Ellie Goulding says her fans don’t recognise her now she has dyed her hair brunette.
The 36-year-old singer has ditched her trademark blonde locks and return to her natural hair colour.
Since she went brown, Ellie can now go out and not get stopped constantly by fans, although some people do confuse her for “someone from the telly”.
Speaking on Irish radio station FM104, she said: “I’m back to my natural colour. It’s brunette now, it’s my natural hair colour.
“Instead of people going, ‘That’s Ellie Goulding.’ I now get people questioning who I might be, because they sort of recognise me but they’re not quite sure. I can’t tell whether I prefer people straight up recognising me or the intrigue of who I possibly might be, could I be someone from the telly or something.”
Ellie releases her new album ‘Higher Than Heaven’ later this month and the fact she is unveiling her fifth studio LP makes her fell “old” and like a music veteran.
The pop star – who has 22-month-old son Arthur with husband Caspar Jopling – said: “I feel old! I do feel old but that’s just because I had a kid a couple of years ago.
“I feel very happy that I am here making music. It’s what I always wanted to do, and every day I feel lucky that I get to do the job I love.”

OHMYGOSSIP — George Ezra is releasing a new limited edition EP which features six songs he has re-recorded from his album ‘Gold Rush Kid’.
The 29-year-old singer/songwriter has teamed up with Sony Music UK and Amazon Music, in collaboration with Sony Corporation of America, to ‘Gold Rush Kid (Amazon Music Live)’ which has been mixed and released in 360 Reality Audio, a new immersive music experience driven by Sony’s spatial sound technology.
Ezra re-recorded the tracks ‘Gold Rush Kid’, ‘Green Green Grass’, ‘Anyone For You’, ‘Dance All Over Me’, ‘Sweetest Human Being Alive’ and ‘In The Morning’ in an immersive studio setting at Metropolis Studios in London.
Rather than remixing existing material, the Amazon Original EP was re-imagined and re-recorded to take full advantage of the 360 Reality Audio format, employing a unique immersive recording setup in the studio, including an innovative spatial set-up and equipment, to capture audio in a new way and provide a truly immersive listening experience for fans.
This new technique included mapping out the studio’s live room footprint to capture the ambiance of each performer, and enlisting a Hamsaki Cube, Optimized Cardioid Triangle and Outriggers to maximize the width of the immersive image.
Talking about his Amazon Original EP, George said: “It’s a new way of listening to music. I know [the record] inside out – or so I thought – but now you can hear it from all different angles. It’s like the songs have come alive in a way I hadn’t heard before.
“I think when you’re a fan of something you want to hear it in every single incarnation. You want to hear the demo; you want to hear the studio version; you want to go to the gig and hear it live. Being given the opportunity to hear the 360 Reality Audio – where it is just so immersive – of course you want to hear that!”

OHMYGOSSIP — The 50th anniversary of David Bowie’s iconic album ‘Aladdin Sane’ is being celebrated with a host of events being held at London’s Southbank Centre.
‘Aladdin Sane: 50 Years’ will feature a two-month long exhibition exploring the creation of the album’s iconic artwork, including the legendary lightning flash portrait by photographer Brian Duffy, as well as a stellar line-up of live music and talks inspired by the album.
The exhibition will be held in the Spirit Level at the Royal Festival Hall between 6 April 2023 and 28 May 2023 will follow the journey of this pioneering portrait, mapping how Bowie’s continuous reshaping of his image paved the way for audiences to rethink their own identities.
Curated by Chris Duffy, the son of Brian Duffy, and Geoff Marsh, the exhibition will begin by spotlighting the vibrant music scene of the early 1970s, contextualising the pivotal moment in which Bowie and Duffy met.
It will go on to explore the unique relationship between the musician and photographer, and the January 1973 photoshoot from which the iconic ‘Aladdin Sane’ image was born.
Of his father’s work, Chris said: “My father’s image of Bowie is often called the Mona Lisa of Pop. It’s important to remember it was the result of a short studio shoot using film, which then had to be sent out for commercial processing. There were no instant digital images or photoshop then. It’s extraordinary how it’s lasted and been endlessly reworked. Wherever I go in the world, it’s always somewhere on a t-shirt.”
Discussing the ‘Aladdin Sane’ celebrations, Southbank Centre Artistic Director Mark Ball added: “We’re honoured to pay tribute to David Bowie, who made his Southbank Centre debut in 1969. The ‘Aladdin Sane’ album cover portrait is considered to be one of the most influential pop culture images of the past half century, and the music remains fresh and contemporary, so we wanted to recognise this major anniversary and reflect on the album and its artwork’s enduring legacy. It’s a work that continues to inspire today’s contemporary artists and the gender fluidity of the images still resonate deeply in queer culture in the UK and across the world.”
The exhibition is complemented by a stunning new book by Chris, ‘Aladdin Sane 50: The definitive celebration of Bowie’s iconic album and music’s most famous photograph – with unseen images’, which will be released on 30 March 2023 by Welbeck.
The Southbank Centre Archive will also present a separate free display exploring David Bowie’s history with the Centre, stretching over 50 years, and his ongoing legacy.
From his performance in the recently opened Purcell Room in 1969, to later performances alongside Lou Reed and his curation of Southbank Centre’s annual contemporary music festival, Meltdown, never before seen archival material will be available for public view.
Coinciding with the release of the album fifty years ago, music artists will pay tribute to Aladdin Sane in the Royal Festival Hall on Friday 21 April. Hosted by the Nu Civilisation Orchestra, Mercury Prize nominee Anna Calvi, Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears along with acclaimed R B singer Tawiah, Roxanne Tataei – who has collaborated with the likes of Nitin Sawhney and Shabaka Hutchings – and masked pop maestro Lynks will perform Bowie’s album in full, which includes hits such as ‘The Jean Genie’, ‘Drive in Saturday’ and ‘Lady Grinning Soul’.
Meanwhile, in the Queen Elizabeth Hall Foyer, two nights of joyous club music will celebrate Bowie’s inimitable persona and influence.
On Friday 21 April, DJ collective and community platform Queer House Party will host a jam-packed programme of radical fun, while, on Saturday 22 April, Afro-Caribbean inspired Queer Bruk will blend dancehall, afrobeats, soca and more for an accessible all-out party.
Across the weekend, there will also be talks and poetry events. In the Purcell Room on Friday 21 April, the National Poetry Library will present Aladdin Sound with ten of the UK’s most exciting poets.
Taking their cue from the poetic language and potent imagination of Bowie’s masterpiece, each poet has been commissioned to write a new poem in response to each track, creating a spoken word version of the album that will be presented live on stage. Poets include Forward Prize-winner Luke Kennard, Keith Jarrett, Golnoosh Nour and Mark Waldron.

OHMYGOSSIP — Queen rocker Brian May has been in talks about making a sequel to biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.
The 2018 film starred Rami Malek as the band’s flamboyant frontman Freddie Mercury, Gwilym Lee as Brian, Ben Hardy as Roger Taylor and Joe Mazzello as John Deacon, and it told the story of Freddie’s early life through to the creation of Queen and their meteoric rise to success, strained relationships within the band and it culminated with their legendary performance at the 1985 benefit show ‘Live Aid’ held at Wembley Stadium.
The movie was a critical and box office success and Rami’s incredible performance as Freddie earned him a Best Actor Oscar with the movie also winning a slew of awards.
Brian, 75, has spilled that there have been discussions about making a second film which continues the Queen story, and the ‘We Are The Champions’ rocker would love to work with the cast again.
In an interview with the Daily Star newspaper, he said: “We’ve been talking about it. I felt proud of it and the people who played us were just phenomenal.
“It’s so tempting to do the sequel – it would be worth it just to work with those boys again.
“‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ climaxed in ‘Live Aid’ and I suppose implicitly Freddie starting to deal with his AIDS, but an awful lot happened between the end of the film to the end of the glory days of Queen.”
Brian is very proud of the movie because it was his and drummer Roger’s way of paying tribute to Freddie – who died from an AIDS related illness in November 1991 at the age of 45.
He added: “I loved the fact we were able to do it for Freddie. That really means a lot and I felt we did it in the right way, and in the right spirit.
“Of course we were represented in the movie because we were a group, but it was really all about Freddie, and I think we did him good.”
