Josh Homme: It’s just as nice to headline Download as it is to play Bournemouth

OHMYGOSSIP — Josh Homme admits headlining Download Festival is no different to playing a gig in Bournemouth.
The Queens of the Stone Age frontman says fans can expect some “gifts” when they top the bill at the alternative music festival at Donington Park in the East Midlands, England, next June, but preparing for the festival is no different from their indoor concerts as both are “just as nice” to play.
Speaking to NME, Josh said: “Is it just going to be same-old-same-old?’ bean Homme. “You always have to give it your all and changing it every night is what we’re about, so it’s always going to be something different. I don’t think there’s any reason to trip out.”
Keyboardist and guitarist Dean Fertita said: “I think the reason that the shows have been so good is because there’s a relaxation to the approach. We’ll decide five minutes before going on to play something that we haven’t played in 20 years.”
Josh added: “And if you see someone with a sign that says, ‘Do this goddamn tune’ then it feels nice to just be able to react in the moment.
“We come bearing gifts, and we want to give everything away. It’s nice to play Donington, but it’s just as nice to play Bournemouth too. That’s not to cheapen either – they’re both as good as it can get. These aren’t real problems.”
Fall Out Boy and Avenged Sevenfold are their fellow headliners at the rock extravaganza that takes place between June 14 and June 16.
Royal Blood, The Offspring, Machine Head, Pantera, Bad Omens, Corey Taylor, While She Sleeps, Sum 41, Billy Talent, The Used, Babymetal, Bowling For Soup, Heilung, Polyphia, Thy Art Is Murder, The Black Dahlia Murder, Biohazard, and many more will also rock Donington.

Jess Glynne refused to give one of her songs to Rihanna

OHMYGOSSIP — Jess Glynne refused to give one of her songs to Rihanna.
In 2022, the 34-year-old singer/songwriter met with Jay Brown – co-founder and vice chairman of Jay-Z’s Roc Nation empire – in Los Angeles and he expressed interest in her ballad ‘Promise Me’ for Rihanna.
However, Jess refused and eventually ended up firing her team and signing with Roc Nation for management.
She told You Magazine: “I said, ‘No, you’re not sending it to Rihanna.’ I mean, it was the biggest compliment, but I was, ‘It’s my song, and I’m an artist, too.’
“I left that meeting and thought, ‘Who’s to say I can’t fire my team?'”
That meeting, along with the death of a friend in London, left Jess determined to seize the day and move on with a new team.
She said: “Choose what makes you happy. Be true to yourself. Life is precious. That’s when I knew: I had to let go of my team. My friend was very spiritual – she would have understood what I needed. I thought, ‘Do this, Jess, and make your friend proud.’
“I feel very proud of myself. I’m like, ‘You did all of that on your own. You took all those meetings. You flew yourself out there.’ I want other women and young girls to be empowered by the decisions they make.”
Jess revealed she has met both Jay-Z and Beyoncé, calling them “very humble human beings, sweet, charming” and is thrilled with her team at new label EMI, calling them “amazing women”.
She added: “Come on Jess, let’s ‘ave it!” We all wanna win, together.”

Nicki Minaj’s world tour will ‘focus on new album’

OHMYGOSSIP — Nicki Minaj’s upcoming world tour will focus on her new album ‘Pink Friday 2’.
The 41-year-old rapper released her fifth record earlier this month it was a huge chart success debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200 album chart and she’s now revealed her 2024 tour will be based around her new material rather than showcasing her greatest hits
During an appearance on ‘Watch What Happens Live’, Nicki explained: “I’ve done three world tours by now, so my fans know the material, so my focus on this tour will definitely be the new album, creating a world of that album and sprinkling everything else around that.
“But of course we’re still going to have the same fun with our throwbacks like we always do. I always make sure I perform my rap stuff, my pop stuff, like, everyone enjoys themselves. I make sure my fans feel well fed at the show.”
The ‘Pink Friday 2 World Tour’ kicks off in Oakland, California on March 1 and stop in cities across the US before heading to Europe and concluding the shows in Berlin, Germany on June 7.
Elsewhere in the interview, Nicki opened up about her musical influences and insisted the late Whitney Houston had a huge impact on her career.
She said: “I don’t think people realise how much singing or singers like Whitney [influenced me]. Whitney’s first album, I know it front to back.
“I was such a little kid, but I would be with my aunt all the time on the weekends and we would play it on the actual turntable, and it was one of the most fun parts of my childhood, so I have a real connection to her. And Diana Ross because my mom would always play Diana and the Supremes in the house, too.”

Sir Elton John is ‘a good psychiatrist’

OHMYGOSSIP — Sir Elton is “a good psychiatrist”, according to longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin.
The pair of hitmakers have been close friends and colleagues for more than five decades and Bernie,73, says if he has any issues, the ‘I’m Still Standing’ singer , 76, is the first person he calls for advice.
He told Goldmine magazine: “He’s definitely the ultimate psychiatrist.
“if you need to get something off your trust, he’s the first person you need to go to to get some easy answers. He is a complete constant. You can always rely on him. And I certainly did back in the early days, back in our formative years when we first got together. I certainly leaned on him, not that he was incredibly worldly, but he was certainly more socially adept than I was at the time. I was a fish out of water floundering about in the big city.
“So he was definitely a crutch to lean on and he did it magnificently and took care of me and made sure that I wasn’t abused by the cynical mindset of others that might have viewed me as being a little wet around the ears and green. when l actually really wasn’t. I was far more Intelligent than they give me credit for.”
Bernie – who opened up about their relationship in his autobiography ‘Scattershot: Life, Music, Elton and Me’ – revealed the music legend is “addicted” to FaceTime and always looks forward to seeing his face during their video calls.
He added: “But yeah, in a word, he’s always been a constant. And he still is.
“I still talk to him regularly, and now that he’s addicted to FaceTime, it’s nice to be able to see him rather than just hear him, because in that way you sort of feel like if he calls you in the morning, you feel like you actually saw him in the morning.”

Sam Ryder forced to dump pricey new music video: ‘No one will ever see it!’

OHMYGOSSIP — Sam Ryder has been forced to scrap a new music video costing thousands of pounds.
The ‘Space Man’ singer, 34, had shot footage of him dressed up as Wizzard frontman Roy Wood, 77, for a promo for his new single ‘You’re Christmas To Me’, wearing blue face paint and a red and white striped hat – just like Roy in the clip for his 1973 festive smash ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday’.
But he told The Sun about mysterious circumstances led to the project being canned and a new video being hastily filmed: “We ain’t said anything, I can’t confirm or deny.
“All I can say is, no one will ever see it, because of reasons beyond our control.
“But there is another video coming that we had to do very last minute.
“It’s a damage-control video. I made it in about eight hours. But the original, I can’t confirm it even exists.”
It’s been revealed Sam’s tune had risen from No12 to No2 in the charts.
The Sun added he kept quiet about why exactly the video was binned.
Sam is having a top career moment as he is now a very real contender for the Christmas No1 later this month ahead of a busy 2024 in which he could win an Emmy award for his ‘Fought and Lost’ single.
Asked what is ahead in his career, he added: “We’ve got album No2 that we’re writing, it’s gonna be coming out.
“We don’t get much Christmas holiday on this team. We’re gonna be working up until the 23rd I think. And then we’re off again on January 6 for the Emmys.
“‘Fought and Lost’ is nominated for an Emmy. So fingers crossed for that. And yeah, festival season is going to be bonkers. It’s just a year full of blessings.”

Eels singer E brands band’s latest Christmas son ‘relentless’

OHMYGOSSIP — Eels frontman E has branded the band’s sad new Christmas track “pretty relentless”.
The singer, born Mark Oliver Everett, 60, has released the band’s third festive song – ‘Christmas, Why You Gotta Do Me Like This’ – which serves as the final track on a new compilation ‘Eels So Good: Essential Eels Vol. 2 (2007-2020.)’
He told The Sun about his feelings on Christmas: “I’m all for the jolly Christmas and I’ve had some very jolly Christmases myself.
“As a kid growing up in America, I was pretty satisfied just to sit in the dark watching the tree lights blink. I didn’t have my Nintendo Switch!
“But I do think it’s important to remember that BEFORE Ebenezer Scrooge becomes the nice guy who buys everybody Christmas dinner, Tiny Tim’s pretty miserable.
“So I thought, ‘Let’s do some music for him.’”
E added about the melancholy feel of his band’s new track: “It is pretty relentless, but at least the sleigh bells automatically evoke snow falling.
“As an adult, I’ve had Christmases, probably like everybody, which are just very bad timing.
“I wanted to do a song for that guy or girl who has just bought an expensive present for their partner and then got broken up with.”
The song features the lines: “I put up my lights and I hung the mistletoe/So why did you have to leave me all alone?”
It comes after two more upbeat Eels’ Christmas songs, including B-side ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Cool This Christmas’ and ‘Christmas Is Going To The Dogs’.

Ice Cube says black Americans like him only had three choices growing up – dull job, jail or death!

OHMYGOSSIP — Ice Cube says black Americans like him grew up with only three choices in life – a dull job, jail or death.
The 54-year-old former N.W.A star, who has gone from music to building a business empire and film career, also said his smash ‘It Was aa Good Day’ was about his real-life battle to try to escape the killer dangers of ghetto life in LA when he was growing up.
He told Hunger about the brutality of the US establishment: “For a long while I would only ever take the back streets. I didn’t want to walk on the Boulevard and deal with a cop’s attitude.
Ice, born, O’Shea Jackson Sr, went on: “The police in Los Angeles will kill you; they will set you up and murder you right there on the spot. After (N.W.A’s) ‘F– Tha Police’ dropped we felt like we had to be extra cautious in how we moved.
“I remember Ice-T told me: ‘Don’t let the LAPD catch you in a twist!’”
When Hunger asked Ice if he felt like he needed “eyes in the back of his head” when he was working on his fame, he added: “Definitely. Remember: America has an avenue for guys like us! You either get a 9-to-5 and work for someone or they have a jail cell for you. They also have the cemetery for you, too.”
Ice is behind a fast-rising 3-v-3 basketball franchise (The Big 3), as well as being a mainstream political pundit who regularly appears on everything from Fox News to CNN.
He was also the voice actor behind the villainous Superfly in this year’s hit animated movie ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtle Mayhem’.
Ice added about his 1992 ‘It Was a Good Day’ track, in which a narrator fantasies about a dream 24 hours before he remembers he is in a tough ghetto: “When I was dodging the stuff I was trying to escape, it was terrible if it happened to you.
“If I could (successfully) navigate through a day with the police looking for me, cowards on the corner waiting to shoot me, and people wanting to jack my car, then that was a good day.
“It meant that I did something right.”

Busta Rhymes reveals ‘significant concern’ about power of AI

OHMYGOSSIP — Busta Rhymes has a “significant concern” about the unchecked power of AI.
The 12-time Grammy award-winning rapper, 51, said any technology that is controlled by powers that be worries him.
He told the Guardian in a question and answer session with fans: “Anything that the government and powers that be can create to try to play God is a significant concern to me.
“I just think that when you play with anything that replaces the mind, the body and the soul, and to the point where it actually devalues it, well, that is serious.”
He added about his belief phones are taking human souls: “They gave us these devices and if you speak a certain way, the phone stores all the data and then it is thinking for you. Then when you are texting somebody, well, words pop up the way you spell it, so you ain’t gotta type it any more!
“The phone is taking your soul from you. The way you think. It is becoming you.
“That is some real weird (stuff) when you think about it, right? When the AI gets to a place of evolution and they feel like: “(To hell with) the humans!” That is some (stuff) where I don’t know what the solution is.
“With AI, we’re (messing) around with something real dangerous.”
Busta, real name Trevor George Smith Jr, also spoke about how he once told David Bowie how he though his interracial relationship with his model wife Iman was “beautiful”.
He added: “I spent time in England when I was a little boy, staying in places like Morecambe, Preston and Blackpool. Wham!, Culture Club, David Bowie – all that was popping.
“In the summer holidays, my mother would always send me off (from New York) for a month to stay with our family overseas, and we had a lot of family who emigrated from Jamaica to England. It was also so I would stay out of mischief in Brooklyn.
“In England, that was the first time I saw an interracial relationship in public. So, when I was with Bowie on the tour, I told him it was great to see a beautiful black interracial relationship with the incredible Iman.”

Calum Scott axed ‘sad’ Christmas single

OHMYGOSSIP — Calum Scott axed a planned Christmas single because it was too depressing.
The 35-year-old singer may be known for his emotional music but he admitted the festive track he penned to release this month was a bit much – though he hasn’t ruled out bringing it out next December instead.
He told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column: “I’ve written one, though I think it might be too sad for a Christmas. Maybe December 2024.”
The ‘Dancing On My Own’ hitmaker has had a “mega year” and is looking forward to celebrating over the festive season.
He said: “I might be playing in Dubai with Lost Frequencies for New Year’s Eve.
“Otherwise it’s family and friends in Yorkshire to celebrate a mega year.”
One of the highlights of Calum’s year was performing for King Charles with Take That at the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle, and he recently admitted he “bawled [his] eyes out” as soon as he came off stage.
He told The Sun in July: “I’ve got to admit, as soon as I came off stage, I bawled my eyes out.
“I think it was just because it was very emotional, I couldn’t believe I was there.
“It was Take That and the King, it was a lot.
“When that emotional energy disappeared, I FaceTimed my mum and was crying make-up down my face.
“I was a hot mess.”
The former ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ star joined the trio to perform an updated dance version of their track ‘Greatest Day’ with DJ Robin Schulz and was thankful he didn’t fall over during the performance in front of the Royal Family.
He went on: “It was mad. One of the maddest experiences I think I’ve been on in this career.
“Everything went to plan but I did worry I’d fall over because there was a big distance between where I came on stage and Gary, and I had to get a bit of a jog on.
“Luckily my shoes were grippy and I stood my ground.”

Michael Jackson demo tapes removed from sale

OHMYGOSSIP — Michael Jackson’s estate have successfully had some “extremely rare” unreleased recordings removed from sale.
Last month, Gotta Have Rock and Roll announced plans to auction off over two dozen master tapes supposedly recorded by the late ‘Thriller’ singer – who did in June 2009 – at New York Studio The Hit Factory in 1994 – and expected to fetch up to $4,000 for each tape, but lawyers acting on behalf of the estate threatened to sue, arguing the recordings were “unquestionably stolen”.
A letter written by attorney Jonathan Steinsapir on 29 November, which was obtained by Billboard, demanded the company “cease and desist from any and all efforts to further auction these tape,” but also immediately return the recordings.
The letter continued: “Neither Michael Jackson nor his record company, Sony Music Entertainment, ever sold or gave away master tapes from his recording sessions at The Hit Factory (or anywhere else).
“These tapes were unquestionably stolen or otherwise taken without authorization. Accordingly, they are the property of the Jackson Estate.”
But the letter was apparently unsuccessful and so this week, attorney Alex Spiro, sent an email to the auction house’s lawyer, in which they noted the company had already informed the estate that they “will not comply with these demands.”
They wrote: “We write to notify you that we intend to seek a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction tomorrow (December 13) in New York Supreme Court. Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions.”
By Wednesday (13.12.23), the tapes had been removed from sale, though Gotta Have Rock and Roll are still selling a number of other items associated with the ‘Bad’ singer, including a “Circa 1984 Owned + Worn Red Military Style Jacket” which they estimate will sell for over $10,000.
The tapes had been noted as being “artifact ONLY with no copyright” with reproduction “STRICTLY prohibited” and had titles including ‘Oh Love’, ‘New Jelly’, and ‘Doing What My Heart’.

Beyonce’s 2013 track Grown Woman arrives on streaming services

OHMYGOSSIP — Beyonce’s ‘Grown Woman’ has arrived on streaming platforms for the first time.
The song was only released as a video when her self-titled 2013 album was released, but now fans can listen to it in all its glory after it was released this week to mark the record’s 10th anniversary.
The promo was famously previewed in the 2013 Pepsi commercial.
In an Instagram clip accompanying the anniversary release, Beyonce admitted: “I still get scared before every album release.
“I’m constantly searching for the deeper purpose with my art. Thoughts about life, my dreams or my fantasies.”
The Destiny’s Child star confessed she was not impressed when the LP dropped on iTunes (now Apple Music) with no prior notice from her or her team.
She said: “I don’t want anybody to give the message of when my album is coming out. I just want this to come out when it’s ready, and from me to my fans.”
The 42-year-old superstar went on to dub ‘Beyonce’ “anti-perfection”.
She said: “This album is the anti-perfection. Happy 10th anniversary.”
Meanwhile, Beyonce recently admitted she has been overwhelmed by the “outpouring of love” from her fans.
The ‘Halo’ hitmaker took to social media to thank fans for their support of her new concert film, ‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce’.
She wrote on Instagram: “I am so deeply thankful to AMC and every team member who worked so hard on this film. I just can’t thank all of you enough for your support. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done because of the short turn around time. I practically slept in the edit, color, and mix sessions. The race against time continued in order to get this film out so quickly. But it was so worth all the grind. I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of love from my Hive. And WOW! I am so touched and encouraged by the incredible reviews!!! (sic)”
Beyonce – who wrote, directed, and produced the concert film herself – is thrilled that she’s managed to reach new fans.
The award-winning star continued: “I also love seeing the positive take aways from people who were not my fans or didn’t yet know my story. The people who had no interest in seeing my shows who have now gained a deeper understanding and respect for all it takes to be a RENAISSANCE woman. (sic)”

Justin Hawkins hails Ed Sheeran ‘humble’ for surprise duet

OHMYGOSSIP — Justin Hawkins has praised Ed Sheeran for his “beautiful and humble” appearance at The Darkness concert.
The global megastar joined the rock band to perform guitar and sing their hit ‘Love Is Only A Feeling’ at London’s Roundhouse in Camden on December 9, much to the surprise of gig-goers, and the 48-year-old frontman has recalled how casual the ‘Bad Habits’ hitmaker, 32, was about it all.
Speaking to Jo Whiley about how they came to share the stage with the Grammy winner on BBC Radio 2, Justin said: “I think he [Ed] was supposed to come and sing with us on an earlier tour, but it didn’t work out then and so this time he was saying ‘Love to come and open for you’ to make amends to us for not doing the running on stage and singing with us stuff.
And we just thought, ‘OK Ed, course you can’, and we didn’t think he’d show up and he did and he brought all of his crew and his security and everything and he had his own little dressing room and he absolutely smashed it.
“He was really brilliant and he came on stage and he said something like ‘Hi, I’m Ed Sheeran, I’m a singer-songwriter from Suffolk’ – and it was beautiful and humble and it was just a great night.”
The ‘Shape of You’ hitmaker was the opening act at the event but had only been billed on the post as E.S.
Ed is known to pop up at all different types of concerts, including joining metal group Bring Me The Horizon to debut their metal version of ‘Bad Habits’ at the BRIT Awards last year, and more recently, teaming up with rap idol Eminem on a rendition of ‘Lose Yourself’.
Meanwhile, Justin has admitted he still feels “guilt” over The Darkness breaking up.
The ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’ singer took a moment to reflect on the glam rock band’s rise and fall from grace as he battled addiction issues after the huge success of their 2004 debut album ‘Permission To Land’.
During the group’s ongoing UK tour to celebrate two decades of the record, he told fans in Manchester on Tuesday (12.12.23) that he “felt really bad” for his brother Dan.
He describes his sibling as the “brains” of the operation and joked: “Silly old Justin took all the drugs and [messed] it up.”
Reflecting on the split after 2005 LP ‘One Way Ticket To Hell… And Back’ – before reuniting in 2012 and continuing to put out music to this day – he added: “I’ve had to live with the consequences of that.”
Justin reflects on the experience in the new documentary film ‘Welcome To The Darkness’.
