Olivier Rousteing: 'Fashion helped me to build my identity'

OHMYGOSSIP — Olivier Rousteing believes fashion has allowed him to “build” his identity.
The 31-year-old creative director of Balmain – who joined the fashion house in 2009 – believes he came from “nowhere” because he was adopted at a young age and never knew his biological parents, but he has praised the creative industry as helping him to discover himself and to feel “stronger” and “more confident”.
Speaking in a video with Allure Online, the fashion designer said: “I think fashion helps you to feel unique and special. To me, if I’m honest and personal, I came from nowhere. I was adopted I came from an orphanage, I don’t know my parents, my biological parents, but I think fashion helped me to build my identity in a way, To feel stronger, more confident with myself.
“Try to find your own identity, and it helped me to grow up, and I think, today, with my fashion I help to make people believe in themselves, being confident, feel powerful … and confidence is important in life.”
And the French entrepreneur – who boasts a celebrity clientele including Rihanna, Kim Kardashian West and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley – wanted to make both the models and customers feel like empowered warriors when they adorned his garments, which led him to coin the term Balmain Army.
He explained: “Personalities are important. I think a lot of designers forget that you talk to women, you don’t talk to hangers, you talk to girls who actually have power. So I think you need to feel it. And I think when I started to get my first critiques and [they were] just calling me ‘too much’ or whatever it is, I was just like actually they are not models, they are defending more than just clothes they are defending my ideas. So, I think, to me, they were more amazing they are soldiers, warriors, and we are going to create an army of people who fight for their rules, fight for their identity and their ideas, and that’s why I started the Balmain Army.
“And all of my girls love it because they fight every day to be who they are, and be respected for who they are and what they do, and I think with fashion we have to fight and go into revolution to make changes.”

Then I found out Rankin was shooting it and I liked the concept. It all fitted together really well.”

The former ‘Hollyoaks’ star said: “It was great working with Rankin, he’s a really nice guy, fun and relaxed and obviously very talented. I really need direction, the modelling aspect can be really foreign to me and he was really great at directing me. And Nathalie felt being on the photoshoot set was different to filming a movie or television show.
Speaking about the experience, she said: “It differed because of the photography in addition to film concept. And being on a set- breaking the scene with the reality, and how that was created was really cool

OHMYGOSSIP — Joe Jonas hired a personal trainer to get him into shape for the Guess campaign.
The 27-year-old singer was announced as the global brand ambassador for the American fashion house in January this year and models in their Spring/Summer 2017 underwear campaign, but the star has revealed his latest fashion venture was a “big challenge” for him and he had to have a fitness expert with him at all times to help him follow a strict diet and fitness regime ahead of stripping down to his boxers for the commercial.
Speaking about his preparation for the photoshoot, the dark-haired hunk – who is known for being in the boyband the Jonas Brothers with his siblings Kevin, 29, and Nick, 24, – told The Metro newspaper: “The Guess campaign was a cool thing to be part of. It was a big challenge. You have to do the dieting and training, and I was travelling so much I really had to get on it and not get distracted. I did a lot of boxing training and a trainer came on tour with me.”

Emma Watson's Beauty and The Beast underwent major changes

OHMYGOSSIP — Emma Watson’s garments in ‘Beauty and The Beast’ were designed to not be “inhibiting”.
The 26-year-old actress plays the lead role as Belle in the 2017 remake of the popular Disney movie, and costume designer Jacqueline Durran has revealed the star’s wardrobe had to be adapted to enable Emma to do “whatever she would want to do” in the items whilst filming, which meant ballet pump shoes were swapped for boots, and the corset was ditched in favour of a flexible bodice that tied at the side.
Speaking about the designs to WWD, the creative mastermind said: “She [Emma] doesn’t wear ballet pumps, she wears boots. She has her 18th-century pockets, but she has them on the outside of her costume so that you can see they’re like a tool belt. They’ve got useful things in them that she’ll need for doing the different things she does in the village. She tucks her skirt up into her waistband so you can see her bloomers, and she wears bloomers so that she cannot be trapped by the skirt.
“Nothing she wears is inhibiting. She can do whatever she would want to do in any of her costumes. She rides a horse.”
However, the iconic yellow ball gown the Disney princess adorns as she dances with the Beast, who is played by Dan Stevens, was the “most difficult” piece to design “by a mile” because it required 10 skilled people almost two weeks to complete.
Speaking about the buttercup-yellow dress, Jacqueline said: “The most difficult costume to do by a mile. We tried all sorts of things. We tried making a more historical interpretation, we made something that was more modern and experimental, we made lots of different versions.”
‘Beauty and The Beast’ is set to hit cinemas on Friday (17.03.17).

Riccardo Tisci believes sportswear is having a 'big moment'

OHMYGOSSIP — Riccardo Tisci believes sportswear is having a “big moment”.
The 42-year-old fashion designer has collaborated with NikeLab and has re-designed the Air Max 97 trainer to celebrate the label’s 30th anniversary, which has seen the mogul add “more height” and “more street” to his creations, because he believes athleisurewear is the most popular trend at the moment.
Speaking about his partnership to WWD, the creative mastermind said: “I gave the shoe more height. I think it’s much more street. It’s a new kind of stance, one which I would want in my wardrobe.
“Fashion is having a big moment with sportswear, which is good. But I think honesty is what people really want in design.”
Riccardo first collaborated with the fashion house in 2014 and has since created a variety of styles for the brand, and he has revealed his love of designing innovative footwear is because shoes have always had a “huge influence” on him throughout his life, and are a big part of the Italian culture.
The Taranto-born entrepreneur explained: “The shoes had a huge influence and a huge impact in Italian culture. For me the shoes are classic, but not classic in the boring way. Classic in the way like when you are looking up in Rome, seeing the architecture and the sculptures.”
Riccardo’s designs will be available to buy on Air Max Day, which is celebrated on March 26, and will retail for $200.
Meanwhile Riccardo – who recently quit his role as creative director of Givenchy – has revealed his sisters “inspired” him to become a fashion designer.
Speaking previously, he said: “My daily life, my energy, my everything – I’ve been educated only by women. I had women around me – my mommy and my eight sisters. So I’m inspired by that.
“I’ve always consulted on how my sisters dress. I actually got into beauty and into creativity because I used to watch my sisters getting ready to go out and they were always very over the top. And I was interested in all of their metamorphoses, like putting make-up on, doing their hair, putting their clothes together. And it was interesting for me, the transformation.”
