OHMYGOSSIP — Mel B’s ex-husband claims their daughter has been left “distraught” by her domestic violence awareness campaign.
The Spice Girls singer appears in a hard-hitting short film, ‘Love Should Not Hurt’, as a character who appears beaten and trapped in a relationship and Stephen Belafonte – who has repeatedly denied the ‘Stop’ hitmaker’s allegations he was abusive in their marriage – has now asked the court for nine-year-old Madison to take an extended break from seeing her mother because she was so upset, distraught and tearful after seeing the video online.
According to TMZ, the producer has submitted legal documents in which he claimed Madison – who lives with him in Los Angeles – was reduced to tears when she saw Mel’s video online and has now told him she doesn’t want to see her mom or travel to the UK to be with her over the summer.
Stephen submitted the documents as part of a response to his ex-wife’s request that their daughter be allowed to travel alone to see her through a scheme operated by airline Lufthansa.
The court has approved Mel’s request for Madison to fly by herself.
The 45-year-old singer recently claimed she only wore white for a year after her marriage ended in 2017 because she’d spent years being told what to wear and “didn’t know” what colours she liked any more.
She said: “For the first year when I left my ex, I would only wear white because I felt I was clearing myself of that.
“I didn’t even know what colour I liked any more because those choices were taken away from me for so long. And I just accepted it.”
Mel – who also has Phoenix, 22, with first husband Jimmy Gulzar, and Angel, 14, with Eddie Murphy – initially thought her then-husband was being “sweet” when he started buying clothes for her but ultimately realised it was part of his controlling behaviour.
She said “It starts with tiny things. ‘Oh, don’t wear that dress – I’ve bought you this dress.’
“It wasn’t like: ‘Put this dress on!’ It was: ‘Look what I’ve bought for you! I saw you looking at it on Net-a-Porter.’ And you think: ‘Oh my God, that’s so sweet!” when actually they’re starting to take over everything.”
