OHMYGOSSIP — Taraji P. Henson “didn’t have the words” to tell her son that his father was murdered.
The ‘Empire’ star has opened up on the devastating conversation she had with her son Marcell, now 26, after his father was “stabbed to death” when he was just nine years old, as she admitted she initially told him his dad had “died in an accident” because she didn’t know how to tell him the truth.
Speaking in a sneak preview of the latest episode of her Facebook Watch show, ‘Peace of Mind with Taraji’, she explained: “My son’s father was suddenly taken – murdered – when he was nine, and I didn’t know how to tell him that. I couldn’t tell him he was murdered, so I told him he died in an accident.
“Later on in life he found out and he came back to me and was like, ‘Why didn’t you tell me my daddy was murdered?’ And so then we had to get therapy.
“I didn’t have the balls – it wouldn’t come out. It was in the paper and I didn’t know how to tell him. He was stabbed to death, it was the worst way you could die. I just didn’t have the words. I didn’t know how to tell a nine year old.”
Taraji, 50, then asked guest and therapist Sierra Hillsman for her advice on breaking devastating news to a young child.
Sierra said: “I would definitely say use age-appropriate language, explaining sometimes there are situations where people do evil things to other people – in this situation, somebody killed your father.”
The ‘Hidden Figures’ star uses her Facebook Watch show – which she co-hosts with her close friend Tracie Jade Jenkins – to discuss mental health issues, particularly those impacting the Black community.
Speaking in a statement about the show – which airs every Monday and Wednesday – she previously said: “I’ve long been a mental health advocate for the Black community and created the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation in 2018 that has provided resources to thousands of people who are struggling. I’m looking forward to bringing this new talk series to Facebook Watch, where I can continue to create conversation around an issue that is near and dear to my heart.”
