OHMYGOSSIP — Dawn Wells has died aged 82.
The ‘Gilligan’s Island’ star – who played Mary Ann Summers in the 1960s sitcom – passed away in Los Angeles on Wednesday morning (30.12.20) due to complications related to coronavirus,
Her publicist Harlan Boll said “there is so much more to Dawn Wells” than the character, who she reprised in numerous TV movies, such as 1981’s ‘The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan’s Island’ and 1979’s ‘The Castaways on Gilligan’s Island’.
‘Gilligan’s Island’ – which aired from 1964 to 1967, and also starred Bob Denver and Alan Hale Jr – told the story of seven castaways who were shipwrecked on an island.
Dawn appeared in several other productions, including ‘Roseanne’, ‘ALF’, ’77 Sunset Strip’, ‘Maverick’, and in 2016 she starred in US soap ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’.
Tina Louise – who played Ginger Grant on ‘Gilligan’s Island’ – said in a statement to CNN: “I was sad to learn of Dawn’s passing, I will always remember her kindness to me.
“We shared in creating a cultural landmark that has continued to bring comfort and smiles to people during this difficult time.
“I hope that people will remember her the way that I do – always with a smile on her face.”
Bruce Campbell is among the stars who have paid tribute to Dawn on social media, describing her as “an icon”.
He wrote on Twitter: “It was my honor at a recent Saturn awards to acknowledge that Dawn, as her character Mary Ann, was WAY hotter than Ginger. You are an icon, Dawn. Live on. (sic)”
‘Glee’ actress Jane Lynch tweeted: “Oh, this so sad. Bon voyage, Mary Ann. Dawn Wells, Mary Ann on ‘Gilligan’s Island,’ dies of Covid-19 complications at 82 – CNN (sic)”
‘General Hospital’ star Kin Shriner wrote: “R.I.P. Dawn Wells . We all had a crush on Mary Ann ! #GilligansIsland (sic)”
