OHMYGOSSIP — Sir Rod Stewart ran up huge phone bills to get soccer updates while on tour.
The 75-year-old music legend used to call his dad Robert in Scotland so he could keep up-to-date with the Scotland national team’s results in the 70s.
He shared: “To get to the 1974 World Cup in Germany, we had to beat Czechoslovakia and this was another game I didn’t see, because I was working with the Faces, but I remember it like it was yesterday.
“I used to phone up and my dad would put the phone by the television and I would listen for the whole game.
“Then they would send me a bill for hundreds of quid. I would say, ‘What person in his right mind would be on a phone call for 90-odd minutes?’ They would say, ‘Oh yes, I suppose it is a mistake, Mr Stewart,’ and I would get a bill for 10 quid.”
However, Rod joked that now that he’s admitted to making the calls, he’s likely to be hit with a huge bill.
He says in ‘The Lawman’ documentary: “They are probably going to send me a fortune’s bill now.”
Meanwhile, Rod previously claimed that playing soccer actually “saved” him.
The chart-topping star thinks playing the sport has helped to keep him healthy and out of trouble.
He said: “I couldn’t do drugs and drink too much, because it would have ruined my game. So football sort of saved me a little bit.
“I got arrested in Los Angeles on a Saturday night because they thought I was drink-driving. I got taken to the police station and there was nothing in my system.
“Any other night they would have done me but as it was a Saturday night I was going home early, getting rested up for a game at 11am the next morning. But football has helped me so much and I miss it so much, not playing.”
