OHMYGOSSIP — Sir Paul McCartney “enjoys” fame.
The Beatles legend – who shot to fame as a member of the iconic Liverpool band at the age of 21 – has admitted he has learned to embrace being super famous because otherwise his life would be “shot”.
Speaking to actor Idris Elba for the BBC special ‘Idris Elba meets Paul McCartney’, which airs tonight (19.12.20), the ‘Luther’ star asked the ‘Let It Be’ hitmaker: “What’s your relationship with fame? You’ve been famous since you were 21. You’re very very very famous. What’s it like juggling fame with reality?”
To which the 78-year-old music icon replied: “I like it! Does that answer your question?”
After the pair laughed, Idris said: “100%.”
The ‘Love Me Do’ star admitted there are some “nuisance moments” such as when fans stop him while he’s trying to enjoy a meal out with his wife Nancy, but overall he has no qualms about being one of the most recognisable people on the planet.
Macca continued: ” The truth is, we’re getting really famous here, so you either stop this or you’d better get with it, try and enjoy it or there’s your life shot. So you know and I know and all famous people know, there’s nuisance moments, you’re in a restaurant with your wife and someone comes up and… ‘I hate to interrupt’ – really? They are the non great moments but all in all, it’s great, I like it.”
Elsewhere, the ‘FourFiveSeconds’ hitmaker opened up about being influenced by Black music and how “in awe” he was when he first met Motown legend Stevie Wonder.
He said: “I’ve always loved it. Right through all the early stuff to Motown and soul, people like that. I’m a bit in awe of that, I don’t mind admitting it, when I meet Stevie Wonder…”
Idris said: “That’s a big moment.”
McCartney continued: “I’m in awe, Stevie Wonder is like – something else! It’s really great, it’s very exciting.”
‘Idris Elba meet Paul McCartney’ airs on BBC One from 9.20pm and is available on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds immediately after it’s been broadcast on TV.
The hour-long special will also be aired on BBC Radio 2 on December 23 between 9pm and 10pm.
