OHMYGOSSIP — Armie Hammer had a moment of “clarity” when he realised he wasn’t OK during lockdown.
The ‘Rebecca’ actor – who split from wife Elizabeth Chambers this summer while quarantining in the Caymen Islands – admitted he experienced a “very intense wake-up call” which made him seek help as he began to spiral without having distractions such as work around him.
He said: “I had a very intense wake-up call one day and I needed more help than I realised.
“There was one specific moment where I was not in my best mental state… and in the midst of this moment that was very intense, I had a very intense moment of clarity, where I sat my head up and thought: I’m not OK.”
Armie called his friend Brendan, who works in mental health, and he arranged for him to start working with a therapist several times a week.
Speaking at 2020’s GQ HEROES in association with BMW, he added: “I still work with her once a week at least.”
The 34-year-old star – who has children Harper, five, and Ford, three, with Elizabeth – in turn helped out a friend who was struggling.
He said “[A friend] told me he was hurting… and I just asked him questions.”
The more they spoke, the more he realised his pal was suicidal but Armie doesn’t think his compassion for his friend was “special on [his] part”.
He added: “That’s what friends are actually for. Everyone else is just acquaintances.”
The ‘Call Me By Your Name’ actor is working hard to be the “best version” of himself in order to be there for the other people in his life.
He said: “I can’t be the best father if I’m not the best version of myself. I can’t be the best friend. I can’t be the best actor. I don’t think I’ll ever get to the point where I say, ‘I’ve nailed it. This is it. I’m happy…’ But I love the idea of struggling to get that a little bit more every day.”
