Derry Girls cast get free blow-dries ‘whenever they want’

OHMYGOSSIP — The cast of ‘Derry Girls’ get free blow-dries “whenever they want” following the show’s series one success.
The Channel 4 sitcom will return for a second season tonight (05.03.19), and Saoirse-Monica Jackson – who plays Erin Quinn on the comedy series – is delighted the tresses perk has resulted from the programme’s positive start.
She said: “We get free blow-dries whenever we want now, it’s crackin’.”
The show is set in Derry, Northern Ireland, in the 1990s and tells the story of Erin (Saoirse-Monica), her cousin Orla (Louisa Harland) and their pals Clare (Nicola Coughlan), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell) and Michelle’s English cousin James (Dylan Llewellyn), during the Troubles.
While hairdressers seem to be big fans of the sitcom, Nicola – who is from Galway in the Republic of Ireland – was concerned people in the Emerald Isle might “hate” her after watching the programme.
She said: “You wonder, will people hate me for it? I asked the other girls, ‘Is this controversial?’ and they said, ‘Oh yeah.’ ”
As well as the show’s controversy, the characters are often seen pulling “grotesque facial expressions”, and Nicola admits the cast were “nervous” about doing so initially, but hope their actions can enable young girls to “feel freer in themselves” as a result.
Speaking in a joint interview with the i newspaper, she added: “There’s a policing of how women should be seen on TV.
“Beautiful and poised. Here, we could pull grotesque facial expressions and not care if we had a double chin when we were talking.
“It’s very rare for women to have the freedom to go big. We saw people like Rik Mayall do it – big male physical performers – and we were nervous about doing it. I hope that young girls watch and feel freer in themselves, entirely free of the male gaze, and not worried about how they look.”
