OHMYGOSSIP — Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s football rookie card has sold for over $45,000.
The ‘Jumanji: The Next Level’ actor dreamed of joining the NFL as a teenager and played football for the University of Miami, and while his original career ambitions never came to fruition, he was “humbled” by how much interest his sporting past attracted, with 50 bids submitted for the souvenir.
He shared a photo of the card’s auction listing – which ultimately ended at $45,100 – on Instagram and wrote: “This story of how my UNIV of MIAMI football card’s value continues to rise has become so surreal to me
“Playing in the @NFL was my dream and playing in the Super Bowl was my even bigger dream. Of course, neither dream came true for me but years later… On SUPER BOWL Sunday my rookie card gets sold for 45K!! Congrats to the winning bidder!
“I never made it as a player to the big dance, so this humbling irony is not lost on me one bit #unpredictablelife #94.(sic)”
The former WWE star played defensive tackle for the Miami team for four years in the 1990s, including in 1991 when they won the national championships.
However, after a brief stint in the Canadian Football League after he graduated, the ‘Moana’ star’s football career came to an end, and Dwayne has previously revealed he fell into depression when he moved back in with his parents after failing to reach his NFL goal.
He said: “I found that with depression one of the most important things you could realise is that you’re not alone. You’re not the first to go through it.
“I wish I had someone at that time who could just pull me aside and [say], ‘Hey, it’s going to be okay.'”
The ‘Ballers’ actor received a call from the Canadian team’s coach a few months later and was asked to return to play for the Calgary Stampeders, but decided against it in favour of pursuing wrestling instead.
He previously recalled: “I hung up the phone, and my dad said, ‘You’re going to do it, right?’
“I said, ‘No I don’t think so. I think I’m done with that. My gut tells me I’m done.’
“He said, ‘You are throwing it all away. It is the worst mistake you will ever make. I said, ‘Maybe I’ll be no good, but I feel like, in my heart, I have to do this.’ ”
