OHMYGOSSIP — Sir Paul McCartney still “values” his working class upbringing.
The Beatles legend, 78, has been in the spotlight since he was in his 20s, but has insisted he still appreciates his working class upbringing in “traditional Liverpool”, because it’s where learned how to behave and what to value.
He said: “That’s where you learn it all, it’s where you get your values. You come out and you experience much more lofty things and famous people. When I grew up, traditional Liverpool, dessert was a tin of mandarin oranges with Carnation milk.”
And Paul believes working class people are some of the “smartest” he’s ever met, despite having met with plenty of politicians and other wealthy people with expensive educations.
He added: “Even though I’ve met a lot of famous people, politicians, I don’t think I’ve ever met smarter people than my people. They’re smart! Don’t ever underestimate this guy over here because he’s working class. This guy could know the entire works of Shakespeare. I had uncles like that and were very educated but they’d never gone to a good school. They were just interested.”
The ‘Hey Jude’ hitmaker feels “lucky” to have come from a “great family”, and praised his father for pushing him to learn to play piano “by ear”.
Speaking to Idris Elba for the BBC special ‘Idris Elba meets Paul McCartney’ – which aired on Saturday (19.12.20) – he explained: “I’m very lucky, we had a great family. My dad was the family piano player, New Year’s Eve parties mainly, there’d be a big singalong.
“He just picked it up by ear, same as me. I said to him ‘teach me’, he said ‘no no, you’re going to learn properly so he never taught me.’ So I learnt by ear.”
