OHMYGOSSIP — Bob Dylan revealed ‘Lady Lay’ was written for Barbra Streisand in uncovered letters which are set to be auctioned off next month.
The 79-year-old music icon was believed to have written the song for 1969 movie ‘Midnight Cowboy’ but in a rare collection of letters sent between Bob and the late blues star Tony Glover in 1971, the star confirms the song was actually penned for fellow singer Barbra.
In the letters, Bob told Tony he created the track as a tune for Barbra, but did not elaborate on the nature of his relationship with the ‘Funny Girl’ actress.
Bob also didn’t specify whether he meant he wrote the song for Barbra to sing, or if it was created as an homage to her.
Other letters set to go up for auction see Bob – whose real name is Robert Allen Zimmerman – explain his experience with anti-semitism, as he hit out at people’s stereotypical view of Jewish people.
He said: “A lot of people are under the impression that Jews are just money lenders and merchants. A lot of people think that all Jews are like that. Well, they used to be ’cause that’s all that was open to them. That’s all they were allowed to do.”
The letters are believed to be part of an article Tony was writing for Esquire magazine, but the piece was abandoned when Bob lost interest in the interview.
After Tony passed away last year, his widow Cynthia Nadler arranged the archival material for the Marvels of Modern Music Auction, and the letters are now available for online bidding until November 19.
