EastEnders Ricky Grover: Bob Monkhouse saved my career

OHMYGOSSIP — EastEnders star Ricky Grover has revealed that his career in showbusiness was salvaged by the late Bob Monkhouse. The actor, who plays Andrew Cotton, said that the Golden Shot star’s invitation to be his support act at one of his final gigs prior to his death in 2003 was a shock.

Speaking to The Sun, Grover recalled: “I was gonna give up comedy a few years ago, until I got a call out of the blue from Bob Monkhouse. He asked if I’d come down to An Evening With Bob Monkhouse.

“I thought ‘I don’t know Bob Monkhouse, he don’t know me. He must have me mixed up with Ricky Gervais or something’, so I blanked the message a few times. Then my PA called and said ‘Bob’s been on the phone, he really wants you there’.

“So I went with my wife and sat there with a load of comedy legends. All of a sudden Bob Monkhouse said, ‘One of my heroes is here tonight, Ricky Grover’. I was looking around thinking, ‘This is a wind-up’.

Referring to his popular 11 O’Clock Show character Bulla, Grover added: “He came up to me afterwards and said how much he loved Bulla. He told me I had to resurrect him.

“So I did, and it got turned into the film My Big Fat Gypsy Gangster, and I landed a role in EastEnders. Not too bad for the remedial kid from Canning Town.”

Helen Flanagan fears “getting broody” after moving in with boyfriend

OHMYGOSSIP — Helen Flanagan has admitted that she may start planning for a baby after moving in with boyfriend Scott Sinclair. However, the ex-Coronation Street actress said that she hopes buying a pet dog will put a stop to her current mood.

“I’d like a dog to stop me getting broody,” she told The Sun. “I’ll probably get a little baby dog. I’d like a Chihuahua.”

Flanagan announced her Corrie departure last October, with her final scenes playing out in February.

Of her future plans, she added: “I’m only 21, I even thought of maybe going back to university. I just want to live for the moment really.”

Flanagan has been dating Swansea City footballer Sinclair since January.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie buy £10 million London home

OHMYGOSSIP — Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have reportedly purchased a £10 million ($16.1 million) mansion in London. The Hollywood pair decided to buy the property – named Whornes Place – while renting it for £30,000 ($48,000) a month last summer.

Pitt was filming zombie thriller World War Z last summer when they were staying in the capital city’s borough of Richmond with their six children. The property has an indoor pool and 15th century wooden beams, according to The Sun. “Brad and Angelina hold an affection for the UK, so this investment makes sense,” a source is quoted as saying.

It was reported last month that Pitt and Jolie were planning to move to London.

On Tuesday it emerged that the couple and their children, Pax, Shiloh, Maddox, Zahara, Knox and Vivienne may have new neighbours in the form of Pitt’s ex-wife Jennifer Aniston.

The Friends actress has also been looking in the Richmond area for accommodation while she films comedy drama Miss You Already, with a source telling the paper that Aniston has had little to do with her former husband since their divorce in 2005.

A-listers George Clooney, Johnny Depp and Sandra Bullock have all had places nearby.

LA-JEW.com — The Four Sephardic Synagogues (Yochanan ben Zakai Synagogue; Istanbuli Synagogue; Eliahu Ha’navi Synagogue; Emtsai Synagogue) are located in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. They form a complex which comprises four adjoining synagogues which were built at different periods to accommodate the religious needs of the Sephardic community, each congregation practising a different rite.

With the closing of the Ramban Synagogue at the command of the Ottoman sultan in 1589, there ceased to be a Jewish house of prayer in Jerusalem and the Jews, many of whom were descendants of immigrants who had arrived after the expulsion from Spain in 1492, were forced to pray privately in their own homes. At the beginning of the 17th century a new synagogue, the Yochanan ben Zakai Synagogue, was inaugurated.

In 1835 Muhammad Ali, viceroy of Egypt who ruled Jerusalem at the time, permitted the refurbishment of the synagogues which had been denied since their construction. At the entrance to the Istanbuli Synagogue is a plaque commemorating the restoration.

After the fall of the Jewish Quarter during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War the synagogues were burnt and desecrated and turned into horse stables. After the Six Day War the synagogues were restored by architect Dan Tanai.


Yochanan ben Zakai Synagogue
According to legend, the Yochanan ben Zakai Synagogue, (Hebrew: בית הכנסת יוחנן בן זכאי‎), also known as Kahal Kadosh Gadol, stands on the spot of the Beit Midrash of the tanna Rabban Yochanan ben Zakai, who established the Sanhedrin in Yavneh after the destruction of the Second Temple. The current building was constructed at the beginning of the 17th century.

A piece of land below street level was chosen for the synagogue in order to conceal the building from the authorities. Meir Ben Dov, however, is of the opinion that the sub-street level plot wasn’t intentionally chosen, but rather that street level itself was lower at the time and the synagogue had protruded above the street. With time the dwellings surrounding the synagogue were demolished and new houses were built above them, while the synagogue itself was preserved. This cycle continued until today, resulting in the synagogue being situated below street level. It should nevertheless be noted that if construction was indeed permitted, the building itself had to comply with Muslim restrictions for dhimmi houses of prayer not to be higher than mosques. Located in the old Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem, it suffered the same fate as most the synagogues in the area during the 19 year Jordanian occupation after 1948. It has been fully refurbished since Israel gained control of the Old City during the Six Day War. This work was initiated by Rabbi Meir Yehuda Getz, Rabbi of the Western Wall, who also restored the Yeshivat haMekubalim to its former glory.

Istanbuli Synagogue
As the Sephardi community of Jerusalem grew, a large group of immigrants arrived from Istanbul, Turkey, who used the adjacent building as a synagogue from 1764. Over time, the Istanbuli Synagogue, (Hebrew: בית הכנסת האיסטנבולי‎), attracted worshipers from the Eastern communities, including Kurdistan and from North and West Africa. The Istanbuli Synagogue is now used by a Spanish and Portuguese congregation following mostly the London rite.

The Aron Kodesh dates from the seventeenth century and was imported from a synagogue which had been destroyed in Ancona, Italy. The bimah, constructed in the eighteenth century, came from a synagogue in Pesaro, Italy. The synagogue was renovated in 1836.

During the Israel War of Independence the synagogue was occupied by Arabs. After Israel gained control of the Old City during the Six Day War, it was renovated.

As the Istanbuli synagogue is the largest of the four, it is used for the inauguration of the Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel.

Eliahu Ha’navi Synagogue
Another synagogue was established in the 16th century and named after Elijah the Prophet. This synagogue is the oldest of the four. The Eliyahu Ha’navi Synagogue mainly served as a beth midrash for Torah study. Also known as Kahal Talmud Torah, it was only used for prayer on festivals. According to legend, the name of the synagogue was given after an event that took place on Yom Kippur, when one person was missing to complete the minyan required for prayer. Out of the blue, a man, unknown to the worshippers, appeared and the service was able to start. The man mysteriously disappeared after the Neilah prayer. The people were sure that the man was none other than Elijah the Prophet.

Emtsai Synagogue
The Emtsai Synagogue or Middle Synagogue, (Hebrew: בית הכנסת האמצעי‎), also known as the Kahal Tzion Synagogue, forms the central chamber of the complex. It was originally a courtyard which probably used as the women’s section of the Rabban Yohanan Ben Zakai synagogue. During Sukkot it could be converted into a sukkah for the worshippers. With the growth of the community, it was decided during the middle of the 18th century to roof the yard. It was turned into what is today known as the Middle Synagogue, due to its location in the “middle” of the other three synagogues.

LA-JEW.com — The Ramban Synagogue is the oldest active synagogue in the Old City of Jerusalem. It was founded by Nahmanides (Rabbi Moshe ben Nahman, whose name is often abbreviated as Ramban) in 1267. Today it’s located at the corner of Ha-Yehudim Street and the square in the Jewish Quarter.

The foundation of the building comprises vaults resting on Romanesque and Byzantine capitals. Along with the fact that there are no Gothic or Islamic architectural features, this suggests that the original building predates the Crusader period.

The synagogue is located three meters below street level, to comply with Muslim restrictions for Dhimmi houses of prayer not to be higher than mosques.

In 1586, the synagogue was closed under the order of the Turkish governor of Jerusalem. Subsequently, the Sephardi community established their center in the adjacent place, where the academy belonging to the tanna Yochanan ben Zakai was said to have stood during the Second Temple period. Today the Yochanan ben Zakai Synagogue stands there.

In 1835, the leaders of the community managed to obtain a permission from the Ottoman authorities for the renovation of the synagogues, which were unified into a single unit.

Over the years, the building has been the home to the Sephardi community, was converted into a mosque after being confiscated by a Mufti, and was used as a flour mill and a cheese factory. Today it is used by the Ashkenazi community.

After the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, the building was destroyed by the Arab Legion. As a result of the 1967 Six-Day War, Jews regained their right to the property, and 700 years after the Ramban revived the ancient building, the synagogue was reopened.

LA-JEW.com — The Hurva Synagogue, also known as Hurvat Rabbi Yehudah he-Hasid, is a historic synagogue located in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem.

The synagogue was founded in the early 18th century by followers of Judah he-Hasid, but it was destroyed by Muslims a few years later in 1721. The plot lay in ruins for over 140 years and became known as the Ruin, or Hurva. In 1864, the Perushim rebuilt the synagogue, and although officially named the Beis Yaakov Synagogue, it retained its name as the Hurva. It became Jerusalem’s main Ashkenazic synagogue, until it too was reduced to rubble by the Arab Legion during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War.

After Israel conquered Jerusalem in 1967, a number of plans were submitted for the design of a new building. After years of deliberation and indecision, a commemorative arch was erected instead at the site in 1977, itself becoming a prominent landmark of the Jewish Quarter. The plan to rebuild the synagogue in its 19th-century style received approval by the Israeli Government in 2000, and the newly rebuilt synagogue was dedicated on March 15, 2010. The company involved with its reconstruction believes that restoring the synagogue to its former glory will once again allow it to serve as a centre for World Jewry.

The Hurva Synagogue today stands off a plaza in the centre of Jerusalem’s Jewish Quarter. Excavations carried out at the site in July and August 2003 revealed evidence from four main settlement periods: First Temple (800–600 BCE), Second Temple (100 CE), Byzantine and Ottoman. Three bedrock-hewn mikvahs (ritual baths) were uncovered there dating from the 1st century.  The earliest tradition regarding the site is of a synagogue existing there at the time of the 2nd century sage Judah haNasi.  By the 13th century, the area had become a courtyard, known as Der Ashkenaz (the Ashkenazic Compound), for the Ashkenazic community of Jerusalem. In 1488, Obadiah ben Abraham described a large courtyard containing many houses for exclusive use of the Ashkenazim, adjacent to a “synagogue built on pillars,” referring to the Ramban Synagogue. The Ramban Synagogue had been used jointly by both Ashkenazim and Sephardim until 1586, when the Ottoman authorities confiscated the building. Thereafter, the Ashkenazim established a synagogue within their own, adjacent courtyard.

The Hurva Synagogue was designed and constructed under the supervision of Assad Effendi, the sultan’s official architect. Built in neo-Byzantine style, it was supported by four massive pilasters at each corner over which soared a large dome. The construction of only one of these towers was completed. The other three were missing the upper level and the small dome that capped it. The facade was covered in finely hewn stone and incorporated 12.5 m (41 ft) high window arches. The height of the synagogue to the bottom of its dome was around 16 m (52 ft) and to the top of the dome it was 24 m (79 ft). Twelve windows were placed around the base of the dome, which was surrounded by a veranda, which offered a fine view of large parts of the Old City and the area around Jerusalem. Being one of the tallest structures in the Old City, it was visible for miles.

The plan to rebuild the synagogue in its original 19th century style received approval by the Israeli government in 2000. Jerusalem architect Nahum Meltzer, who proposed rebuilding the synagogue in its original Ottoman format, was given the commission. Meltzer stated that “both out of respect for the historical memory of the Jewish people and out of respect for the built-up area of the Old City, it is fitting for us to restore the lost glory and rebuild the Hurva Synagogue the way it was.” The state-funded Jewish Quarter Development Corporation originally convinced the Israeli government to allocate $6.2 million (NIS 24m), about 85% of the cost, for the reconstruction, with private donors contributing the remainder. In the end, the government only gave NIS 11m, with the remainder being donated by a Ukrainian Jewish businessman and philanthropist, Vadim Rabinovitch.

In 2002 the Israeli mint issued a set of medals featuring the synagogue to mark the beginning of the reconstruction project. Following comprehensive historic research, the reconstruction works began in 2005 and on February 15, 2007, Rabbi Simcha ha-Cohen Kook of Rehovot, was appointed as the rabbi of the Hurva, a move confirmed by leading rabbis, including Yosef Sholom Eliashiv. On April 15, 2008 a celebration marked the placing of the keystone in the synagogue’s dome.

The reconstructed Hurva was officially opened on March 15, 2010 in the presence of Israeli politicians and chief rabbis.

Samantha Ronson makes live TV performance debut

OHMYGOSSIP — Samantha Ronson has made her live television performance debut on Live! With Kelly. The DJ-singer debuted her new single ‘Summer of Sam’ with her band The Undertakers on the morning show on Tuesday (May 1).

‘Summer of Sam’ is included on Ronson’s debut album Chasing the Reds, under her own label Broken Toys Records.

The single features rapper Wale but he did not join Ronson on Live! With Kelly.

Talk show host Kelly Ripa predicted that ‘Summer of Sam’ would become “the anthem of every bar across every city in the country”.

Last summer, Ronson was arrested in California for driving under the influence of alcohol after failing her sobriety test and refusing breathalyser analysis on the scene. She was then charged with two misdemeanour counts of DUI.

Ronson is the twin sister of fashion designer Charlotte Ronson and the brother of music producer Mark Ronson. Her relationship with Lindsay Lohan made many headlines in the press and tabloids.

Russell Brand dating David Hasselhoff’s ex-girlfriend

OHMYGOSSIP — Russell Brand is reportedly dating David Hasselhoff’s Playboy model ex-girlfriend. The comedian and Rock of Ages actor announced his divorce from Katy Perry last December, and has been linked with a number of women since then.

Brand is now said to be seeing Anouska de Georgiou, who was romanced by the former Baywatch star in 2010. According to The Sun, she has previously been linked with Jared Leto, Lee Ryan from boy band Blue and Simply Red’s Mick Hucknall.

Brand was introduced to the budding actress at a charity fundraiser in Los Angeles on Sunday (April 29).

de Georgiou has spent more than five years in the city trying to make it on the silver screen.

“Anouska is determined to be a success in Hollywood,” a source said. “She’s a fiercely ambitious girl.”

De Georgiou had a small part in the 2004 film remake of Alfie and has signed up to a Channel 4 reality show called California Dreaming.

“Anouska is a good match for Russell as she’s got a fiery personality,” a second insider added. “It won’t be too difficult for her dealing with the limelight. She had a pretty serious relationship with The Hoff a couple of years ago.

“They were together for almost a year, which in LA is a big deal.”

OHMYGOSSIP — With about 30,000 visitors a day, Kenion Malha (officially called Jerusalem Mall) is the most popular shopping centre in Jerusalem.

Though not big in size, it does house some good restaurants and shops (over 250) that don’t have storefronts in other parts of the city. There is a movie theatre as well generally playing popular movies from the United States with no overdub, just subtitles in Hebrew.

There are about 2,000 free parking spots at the mall but it might be difficult to get one on a Saturday night if there is a Beitar Jerusalem football match at the adjacent Teddy Kollek Stadium. The mall is open Sunday through Thursday from 09:30 to 22:00, Fridays from 9:00 to 14:30 and Saturdays from one hour after the end of the holy sabbath until 23:00.

Malha Mall (Hebrew: קניון מלחה‎, Kanyon Malha), also known as Jerusalem Mall (Hebrew: קניון ירושלים‎, Kanyon Yerushalayim), is an indoor shopping mall in the southwestern neighbourhood of Malha, Jerusalem. The mall, which opened in 1993, has 260 stores on 3 levels with a shopping area 37,000 m² and 3,000 m² of office space. It is one of seven malls built in Israel by David Azrieli.

The mall also has a post office, a synagogue, play areas for toddlers, an animal petting corner, and a food court.

The mall is located near the terminus of Jerusalem’s Begin Expressway, and is located 500 meters from the Jerusalem Malha Railway Station. Bus lines of the Egged Bus Cooperative can be used to reach many parts of Jerusalem; bus stops are located next to the main entrance as well as on the opposite side of the street, and on some of the other sides of the mall. The mall is connected to the Teddy Stadium by a pedestrian bridge.

Brad Pitt turns wedding planner

OHMYGOSSIP — Brad Pitt is taking the lead! The actor is apparently in charge of his wedding to Angelina Jolie and has been getting involved in every aspect of the big day as he wants the nuptials to be perfect.

“Brad’s been doing extensive renovation on the house and is using a specialist in chateau restoration,” a source said.

“Brad’s spent over $20 million already. Now he’s offering hefty bonuses to workers to complete it by summer. He’s even trying to organize an aeroplane landing site in the grounds for guests to come in by private jet — but that’s proving rather tricky, what with permits and no-fly zones.”

“Brad’s been asking all the locals if they’ll be able to source produce from the local area for the reception. It’s certainly going to be a moment in local history.

“Brad’s been tasting and looking up French dishes for weeks. He wants the perfect menu and, of course, the perfect wine to accompany it. That is all going to be locally sourced, too.”

Brad has also asked Angelina’s brother James Haven to officiate the ceremony as minister. “Brad thought it would be a nice touch to ask James to conduct the ceremony,” said the source.

OHMYGOSSIP — Khloe Kardashian has spoken out about her and husband Lamar Odom‘s decision to step away from the spotlight. The couple put their reality show on hiatus until Lamar’s basketball career is back on track.

“We just wanted to prioritize a little,” Khloe told People magazine.

“We just wanted a little pause. Part of being married is knowing when your husband needs your support.”

Khloe and Lamar will only be appearing on E!’s Keeping Up With the Kardashians, and their own daily lives will no longer be on display.

“There’s less pressure on us,” Khloe said.

“I’m a modern girl, but you should put your husband first. I like to think divorce is not an option.”

Nadya “Octomom” Suleman files bankruptcy with around $1 million debt

OHMYGOSSIP — Nadya Suleman has filed for bankruptcy, saying that she has as much as $1 million (£616,160) in debt. Suleman – also known as ‘Octomom’ – said that the move is best for her 14 children, including eight octuplets born in 2009.

Suleman told the Orange County Register in an emailed statement: “I have had to make some very difficult decisions this year, and filing [for] Chapter 7 [bankruptcy] was one of them.”

The 36-year-old – from La Habra, California – reports up to $50,000 (£31,000) in assets in federal court filings. This means that she owes more than 20 times her net worth. Suleman’s category of bankruptcy means that a court-appointed trustee would liquidate her assets to pay off creditors before she is discharged from most of her debts.

She owes money to her father, the city’s water department, satellite company DirecTV and Whittier Christian School, where some of her children are students. Suleman also owes more than $30,000 (£18,485) in rent payments on her four-bedroom house.

The home’s previous owner, Amer Haddadin, claims that his own credit has suffered as he allowed the home to go into foreclosure proceedings by not making the mortgage payments and an auction that was scheduled for Monday (April 30) has been postponed for a week.

Suleman purchased the home from Haddadin under an all-inclusive trust deed three years ago and is said to have fallen behind on her monthly payments of $3,000 under their agreement.

Victoria Beckham forgets son Brooklyn on school run

OHMYGOSSIP — Victoria Beckham has confessed that she recently forgot her son Brooklyn when she was doing the school run. The ex-Spice Girl described to Vanity Fair how she drove off to take her son to school without him actually being in the car.

“Oh my God, you know what I did the other day?” she said. “This is a funny story. I got up in the morning, and I knew that I had a whole morning full of conference calls. So I got up early with Harper, sorted Harper out, got all the kids their breakfast, got them ready for school, put Harper in the car seat, and said, ‘Come on, kids, we have to get going or we’re going to be late’.

“Every morning I take Brooklyn, and David takes the little boys to school. We take it in turns because they go to two different schools.

“So I jump in my Range Rover, put the car seat in, put my iPod on – obviously very important – and I drive to school.

“And then I realise, I’d left Brooklyn in the kitchen. I was driving along, talking away, and all of a sudden, I looked at the front seat, and I was like, ‘S**t! S**t! I’ve forgot something!’

“I’d gotten down the road, and I literally had to turn around and drive back up the driveway. And David was standing there in the driveway with all three boys, just… [shakes her head].

“And I felt like such an idiot because I was in such a rush. Harper was in the car, I was in the car, and we were on the way to school. But we did not have the child who needed to go to school.”

Dronning Beatrix besøker Friso hver helg

OHMYGOSSIP — Når nederlenderne mandag feirer sin nasjonaldag – Koninginnedag (Dronningdagen) – sender nok mange en ekstra tanke til populære dronning Beatrix, som har vært gjennom en tung og vond vår etter at hennes mellomste sønn Friso skadet seg alvorlig i en alpintulykke i februar, skriver Ohmygossip.com.
 
Prins Friso ble tatt av et ras da han kjørte på ski utenfor oppmerkede løyper utenfor den østerrikske vintersportsbyen Lech, og har siden ligget i koma. Han ble først behandlet i Innsbruck, men ble siden flyttet til det private sykehuset Wellington Hospital i London, byen han bodde i sammen med sin kone og to døtre før ulykken.
 
I helgen skrev De Telegraaf at dronning nesten hver helg siden har tatt turen til London for å besøke sønnen, medierer Side2. Prinsen lå under snømassene i hele 20 minutter før leger kom til stedet og fikk gjenopplivet ham. Skadene var svært alvorlige, og legene regner det som usannsynlig at han noen gang vil våkne igjen.

Linda Evangelista krever 260 000 kroner i måneden fra sin tidligere elsker François-Henri Pinault

OHMYGOSSIP — I sommer ble det kjent at den styrtrike forretningsmannen François-Henri Pinault (49) er faren til Linda Evangelistas (46) sønn Augustin James (5). Nå har supermodellen, ifølge Fox News, gått til sak mot sin tidligere elsker.

Selv om hun er en av verdens mest betalte supermodeller krever hun gigantiske summer i månedlig bidrag til seg selv og sønnen.

Evangelista er vant til en luksuriøs livsstil og krever over 260 000 kroner i månedlig bidrag fra franskmannen. Summen vil blant annet dekke 91 000 kroner i måneden for topptrente sikkerhetsvaker og 24-timers barnepass til en verdi av 40 000 kroner.

Pinault er sjef for luksusmerkene Gucci og Yves St. Laurent og  familiens hans skal ha en formue på flere titalls milliarder dollar.

Franskmannen skal etter planen avgi sin forklaring på torsdag og Evangelista vil fortelle sin side av saken i rettssalen på fredag.

Pinault er gift med skuespilleren Salma Hayek og har datteren Valentina sammen med henne. Evangelista skal ha blitt gravid i 2005 etter en fem måneder lang affære, rundt samme tid som han ble sammen med Hayek.
