Gladiators star Cobra says he earned more from panto than the show
OHMYGOSSIP — Michael Wilson earned more appearing in a pantomime than he did on ‘Gladiators’.
The 60-year-old athlete, whose alter-ego was ‘Cobra’ on the classic British game show from the ’90s, revealed that the cheques he received from the programme were a lot smaller than the ones he earned from his pantomime appearances.
Speaking to the Daily Star newspaper, he said: “People don’t realise the best money really weekly was panto. When you see the papers often say, ‘They’ve ended up doing some panto’, and some of these big soap stars were getting £20,000 a week. Frank Bruno was on £25,000 a week in the ’80s.
“He used to get a ribbing for it, but it was that much money in the ’80s, let alone now. Paul O’Grady, when he appeared in the Birmingham Hippodrome, he was on £100,000 a week short-term.
“The best money I got was from that and personal appearances. You might have five in a week and we get between £750 and £2,000.”
The athlete also admitted he didn’t like the new outfits for the BBC reboot.
He said: “The outfits … They’re really unflattering and just horrible really. I thought they could have done a lot more with them.
Michael then revealed that he found a lot of fan interactions over social media are “really rude”.
He explained: “They are actually really rude. They send pictures of them wearing stockings and suspenders. I don’t know why they think it’s enticing because it isn’t. Some of them are shocking but I guess it’s flattering really – but I can’t say I’m interested.
“Back in the day, there we didn’t have phones with cameras and social media, instead we just got loads and loads of stuff in the post and fan mail for me anyway
“Right from the very start, we were up in a press office where someone handled my post for me, and they said ,’Sometimes people seem to like sending you really filthy letters.’
“Sometimes they seem to send public hair in the post. I laughed and said, ‘Well, you better keep them and we will make a wig for Wolf’. Well, c’mon he used to talk about being bald and stuff all the time, and I used to tell him to shave it off. After he eventually did it, he said he wished he had done it years ago.”
