Susanna Reid reveals why she has given up alcohol: ‘There’s more reasons not to drink!’

OHMYGOSSIP — Susanna Reid has given up alcohol for the sake of her skin.
The 53-year-old presenter believes people need a “proper motivation” to partake in Dry January and after being told by a doctor that alcohol was the reason behind her skin issues, and she has found that staying sober has been a “brilliant external motivator” to keep going.
Speaking on ITV’s ‘Lorraine’, she said: “Lots of people are doing Dry January and you really need a proper motivation for doing it. If you have a vague ‘Oh, I shouldn’t drink’, it’s hard to stick to it.
“You need a ‘why’ to do it. And my why was a number of things.
“But one of them was – I kept getting breakouts on my skin. And my doctor said it was because alcohol dilates your blood vessels and so you get more of a blood rush to the skin, you get that flushed look.
“I was prone to spots, breakouts, rosacea. Every time someone said ‘Oh, just have one’, I would think, ‘I don’t want one on my skin!’ It was a brilliant external motivator.”
The ‘Good Morning Britain’ host admitted some other benefits of giving up alcohol have included rapid weight loss, and she is now in something of a “virtuous circle” as she continues to feel better and better as a result of her abstinence.
She said: “I think when you’re getting up in the morning, you need a clear head. Lots of us tend not to have an alcoholic drink the night before a shift but I just found that even if I had a drink at the weekend, it was taking longer to flush it through. And I just didn’t like that feeling of hangxiety.
“Also, I lost quite a lot of weight. White wine in particular is known as liquid cake. It’s just so many calories in a glass!
“Do it for a month, see the effects it has on your skin, see the effects it has on your general health and once you start to see them, it’s like a virtuous circle. I will still have – if someone is celebrating – I’ll still raise a glass. At Christmas, I’ll have a couple of bubbles. But I would say 99.9 per cent of the time, I’m alcohol-free.
“For New Year’s Eve, I was sitting at a bar because it was the only place left in a restaurant and all these drinks were coming up to be taken around by the waiters.
“I looked at one and thought it looked absolutely lovely but then I thought, ‘Yeah, but I’ll get that and I get a breakout. Or tomorrow I’ll not feel very good.’ I want to feel good. There’s more reasons not to, than reasons to.”
