OHMYGOSSIP — Helen Skelton struggled to feel “sexy” during her stint on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.
The 40-year-old mum-of-three took part in the BBC TV talent show last year just months after splitting from her husband of eight years Richie Myler, and Helen has admitted she suffered a crisis of confidence when working with her dance partner Gorka Marquez.
In her new book ‘In My Stride’, Helen explained: “In week two, Gorka asked me why I didn’t feel sexy. It was an awkward question that immediately made me cringe.
“Why ask me that?! I was just there for the banter. I have never been sexy, I was the cute and funny type. He was asking a woman with three children under six, whose husband had just left her and was with another woman, TO BE SEXY. I thought: ‘Who would feel good about themselves in that scenario?’”
However, Helen did learn to embrace her sexy side after learning a dance to ‘Cabaret’ song ‘Mein Herr’ in which she channeled the character of Sally Bowles.
She added: “We had found a dance which let me own my own moment and be the boss.”
During one of the shows, Gorka alluded to Helen’s struggle on camera when he told her: “I know you have been having a difficult time and you may not feel like you are good enough or beautiful.
“Even if you don’t believe in yourself, I believe in you, your family believes in you. Everyone here believes in you …
“It doesn’t matter how many times anyone tells you to believe in yourself, it’s only you that can make the change. You are an amazing woman, mother and incredible dancer, so believe in yourself.”
Helen went on to finish in second place behind champion Hamza Yassin, and she later insisted appearing on the show helped her deal with “dark days”.
During an appearance on TV show ‘Lorraine’, she said: “I just wanted to make my kids proud. So we didn’t quite bring home that trophy but we made memories that would make a lifetime …
“If I could bottle that atmosphere from Saturday, it’ll see me through any dark days. It was just the most wonderful feeling. It just goes to show what happens when you surround yourself with good people.”
