OHMYGOSSIP — Johannes Radebe wants to be Strictly Come Dancing’s “next Anton Du Beke”.
The pro dancer – who made history on the BBC show as half of the first-ever all-male pairing alongside ‘The Great British Bake Off’ winner John Whaite last year – wants to become part of the furniture on the programme, just like 55-year-old dancer-turned-judge Anton, who has appeared in every season of the show.
The 34-year-old dancer told the Metro newspaper he is “planning on being the next Anton”, adding that he will be on the show “for as long as they will have me”.
Being on ‘Strictly’ was Johannes’ dream for a while as during his first gig – dancing on cruises – he dreamt about how “wonderful” it would be to star on the show.
He said: “I watched ‘Strictly’ from a distance, and looking at the prospects of all these incredible professional dancers that were on the show.
“I just kept thinking, ‘Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be that well-known and be able to to put on a show in a theatre where people would come and watch?’ ”
Dancing became something he wanted to do when he was a seven-year-old boy.
Johannes said: “I saw a couple demonstrate the waltz in [full] beautiful attire.
“But I think it’s when I saw this sequined jacket on the man, I just thought, ‘I want to wear those sparkles and I’ll do whatever it takes.’ ”
Johannes believes dance brought him “a lot of comfort and peace” after being a victim of homophobic bullying in his native South Africa.
He said: “I say that because you can imagine [what it’s like] growing up in a township as a gay boy. So dance felt like my refuge. That’s where I went to go and hide and that’s where I thrived.”
