OHMYGOSSIP — Anna Karen has died in a house fire.
The ‘EastEnders’ and ‘On The Buses’ actress was killed in a blaze at her home in Ilford, east London, on Tuesday (23.02.22) night.
Three fire engines and around 20 firefighters were called out to the blaze but were unable to save Anna, who died at the scene.
Witness Sivalai Pavananthakumar told The Sun newspaper: “There was a lot of smoke, and flames, and people in the street had seen what was happening and came out to try and help.
“The fire brigade and police were here quickly and kicked down the door, there was so much smoke.
“I recognised her and would see her everyday when I took my children to school, she was a nice old lady and always said hello.”
Another neighbour added: “I knew her from ‘EastEnders’, it was like having a celebrity living in the street, she was a lovely old lady and always spoke to everyone.”
Police confirmed the body of a woman had been found with formal identification still to come.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but early indications suggest it is not suspicious.
Anna – who was 85 – found fame after playing the role of Olive in the comedy ‘On The Buses’ and featured in all 74 episodes of the hit sitcom, which aired from 1969 to 1973.
She also made appearances in the series’ spin-off films such as ‘Mutiny on the Buses’ and ‘Holiday on the Buses’.
Anna also starred in ‘EastEnders’ as Aunt Sal – the sister of Dame Barbara Windsor’s character Peggy Mitchell – on a recurring basis between 1996 and 2017.
