OHMYGOSSIP — Ricky Merino has said it was “love at first sight” when he met his ‘The Language of Love’ co-host Davina McCall.
The 35-year-old star is presenting the new dating show in his native Spain alongside Davina, 54, and although he accepts it was a “risk” for Channel 4 to hire him the chemistry between him and the ex-‘Big Brother’ presenter was clear from the start and the pair quickly became friends.
He said: “It was a risk for the channel because they like me and they like Davina but they didn’t know how we were going to work – like is there going to be chemistry? And it was love at first sight, because we have the very same sense of humour, the same references. We have become close friends for real, because we are the same mad people.”
The singer – who shot to fame by winning the Spanish equivalent of ‘The X Factor’ – went on to explain that as a long-time fan of Davina it is a “dream come true” to team up with her on the show sees group of Brits and a group of Spaniards go on a series of dates despite the language barrier
He said: “I never imagined in my life working in the UK on Channel 4 next to Davina. It’s a dream come true because I knew her from Big Brother and I remember when I was a teenager that I saw her on MTV.”
However, the performer – who is currently starring in a production of ‘Ghost: The Musical’ in Madrid – revealed that he had trouble understanding British idioms, naming “fill your boots” as an example.
In an interview with The Sun newspaper’s TV Biz column, he said: “There was something I don’t remember, something about boots. Fill your boots.
I think it was Davina, she told me that and I was like, ‘What?’ I really needed Davina to translate to me.”
