OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Line of Duty’ was the BBC’s most-watched show on iPlayer in 2021.
The broadcaster has unveiled its streaming figures for the year and Jed Mercurio’s police corruption drama has topped the rankings as the most-watched boxset, while the sixth season’s premiere was the most-watched episode.
The series as a whole was watched 137 million times, while the opening episode pulled in 9.2 million views.
Dan McGolpin, director of BBC iPlayer and channels, said: “It’s been an incredible year for BBC iPlayer with a unique mix of programmes driving more viewing than ever before.
“‘Line Of Duty’ tops the tables and it’s fantastic to see so many other brand-new drama series also featuring highly alongside those memorable sporting moments from last summer and some of the best documentary series of the year.”
For the overall figures, the Tokyo Olympic Games follows behind in second place and was watched 90.2 million times, with ‘Pretty Little Liars’ (79.9 million), Euro 2020 (68.2 million) and ‘Silent Witness’ (62.3 million) rounding off the top five.
Just outside that in sixth place is ‘Waterloo Road’ with 45.3 million views, while ‘Doctor Who’ (41.8 million), ‘Death In Paradise’ (39.7 million), ‘The Serpent’ (35.4 million) and ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’ (33.3 million) make up the rest of the top 10.
Meanwhile, premiere episodes of ‘Virgil’ (8 million), ‘Time’ (7.3 million), ‘The Serpent’ (6.3 million), ‘Bloodlands’ (5.1 million), ‘The Pact’ (4.7 million) and ‘Traces’ (4.4 million) were all among the most-streamed episodes on iPlayer in 2021.
Also on the list was the Euro 2020 final between Italy and England – which was watched six million times – as well as the ‘Volcano’ episode of ‘A Perfect Planet’ (3.7 million), and ‘An Admission of Murder’ (3.6 million) from the second series of ‘Forensics: The Real CSI’.
