OHMYGOSSIP — Rob Beckett felt “panicked” about whether he would be able to “connect” with his kids because they’ve had such a different upbringing to him.
The 56-year-old comedian – who has two daughters – has spoken out about his working class origins, and insisted that while he works in the entertainment industry, he is not very “showbiz” in his personal life.
He said: “I do showbiz things for my job, but I don’t think I’m very showbiz. I had a very working class background, but then my kids now are living a completely different lifestyle.
“When the kids came, I didn’t really know who I am anymore or what my kids are going to be.
“I was a bit panicked, really, about … will I be able to connect with my kids when they’ve had such a different upbringing and lifestyle to me.”
On his upbringing, the ‘Rob & Romesh vs…’ co-host admits he is “careful” about what he says to his daughters after he heard a teacher say he was “never going to be a high flyer” during his younger years, which knocked his confidence.
Speaking to Nihal Arthanayake on BBC Radio 5 Live, he explained: “I had the privilege of lack of expectation – nothing was really thought of me.
“My first parents evening, when I was four or five, the teacher said, ‘Where do we start with Rob, he’s never going to be a high flyer’.
“When you hear that as a kid, it does hit your self-confidence. That’s why I’m really careful with what I say to my girls.”
