OHMYGOSSIP — Debra Stephenson feels “bad inside” when she plays villainous characters.
The ‘Holby City’ star is currently portraying director of funding Jeni Sinclaire in the BBC medical drama, and with her alter-ego set to show her true colours next week, the 49-year-old star admitted playing such a role is like “delving into all those parts you might prefer to leave alone”.
When asked if she is relishing taking on a horrible character, Debra said: “I am.
“I certainly wouldn’t steer clear of other ‘bad’ characters just because I’m most well known for playing Shell Dockley in ‘Bad Girls’.
“When you play a baddie, it’s so challenging and thought-provoking and it makes you feel bad inside, like you’re delving into all those parts you might prefer to leave alone.”
Debra also admitted she had “reservations” about taking on the role because her character is so “horrible”, but she also believes the plot is displaying an “important message” to viewers.
She added to TV Times magazine: “I thought, ‘I really want to do it, but, my God, Jeni’s horrible.’
“No one wants to play someone who’s harming young people, do they?
“There is a huge responsibility that comes with it.
“But there’s an important message that needs to be conveyed, and that’s that these things do happen – young girls are being snared into this world, and this story is a reminder they need to watch out.”
While Debra admits Jeni “gets a real buzz” from raising money, her character is involved in some “nasty business”.
The star describes her as a “facilitator, who arranges for rich men to meet young girls”.
