OHMYGOSSIP — Samantha Giles no longer has to wear a wig to play Emmerdale’s Bernice Blackstock.
The 49-year-old actress recently reprised her role as the hairdresser in the ITV soap, but she opted to wear a hairpiece for the part because her tresses are “very thick and wiry” and the show’s stars cannot have professional help for their locks due to coronavirus pandemic restrictions.
However, she has now axed the wig because bosses have granted her permission to have her hair styled twice a week at the show’s studios.
She said: “The wig has had more publicity than anything at the moment.
“I had the latest message from upstairs, as we call them, to say, ‘Just do whatever it takes, just get the wig off her,’ so I’m allowed to have my hair blow dried twice a week.
“It will be one of two people that does it, so it’s still very COVID safe.”
Samantha admitted she still has to do her own make-up, but is glad to be rid of the wig.
Speaking on ‘The God Cast’ podcast, she added: “I still have to do my own make-up, but at least I get my hair done. Thank goodness.”
Earlier this month, Samantha – who resumed filming on ‘Emmerdale’ in April – said it had been “a nightmare” wearing a wig in the show.
She said: “This has been a nightmare this wig business.
“I am wearing a wig. I’ve had a lot of flak about it, actually.
“My own hair is very, very thick and wiry and it’s not like Bernice at all.
“She’s a hairdresser, so she’s got to look very coiffed.
“And I can’t do anything with my hair, I can’t make it look like that, so [the] make-up [team] agreed – because they can’t touch us or do anything to us at the moment – that a wig was the way to go.”
