OHMYGOSSIP — Demi Jones has sparked an increase in young girls getting lumps on their neck checked out – after she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
The former ‘Love Island’ star underwent an operation for a “full thyroidectomy” just days ago, after being diagnosed in May, and her surgeon has thanked her for raising awareness about thyroid cancer after doctors saw a “significant increase” in young girls checking out their lumps and bumps.
She wrote on her Instagram Stories: “Guys I’ve just had the best news! My lovely surgeon has just told me since I publicly spoke out about my thyroid cancer, they’ve had a significant increase in the number of young girls being referred and getting lumps on their neck checked, and he thinks it’s because of me! How amazing. (sic)”
The 22-year-old star – who had a “golf ball-sized” lump removed from her neck in April – revealed the “most painful part” of her thyroidectomy was having a hole in her neck, which a tube is now attached to, but she is feeling “surprisingly better” than she did after her first op.
She said: “I feel surprisingly better this time. I don’t know if that’s because I’ve been through it, so I knew what to expect.
“But this thing [the tube] is just really painful.”
Demi recently revealed she had a scan appointment for a lump in her neck pushed back six times over seven months amid the coronavirus pandemic – before finding out she has thyroid cancer.
Last month, she informed her Instagram followers of her diagnosis.
She wrote: “Hi guys, I got my results today and unfortunately I have Thyroid cancer.
“The tumour has been removed but I’m now due to have more surgery to remove the rest of my Thyroid.
“I’m staying very positive and I’m a strong girl so I’ll be fine, thank you for your love and support always [heart emoji] I’ll bounce back stronger (sic)”
