OHMYGOSSIP — Alexandra Mardell’s engagement came as a “complete surprise”.
The ‘Coronation Street’ star revealed in April that her partner Joe Parker had popped the question and she admitted she’s still feeling “the buzz” of excitement, which was made stronger because she wasn’t expecting him to ask her to be his wife while they were enjoying a date night at home.
She gushed: “We’re so excited! I don’t think the buzz has worn off yet…
“It was a complete surprise. I was at the kitchen sink like, ‘Is this happening?’ ”
And it’s no surprise that Alexandra was shocked as even Joe admitted he hadn’t been planning to propose on the fateful evening.
He told OK! magazine: “It was a spur-of-the-moment thing. I was trying to think of ways I could do it but nothing was open. The original plan was to propose in Paris, which we’d booked for Ali’s birthday, but that got cancelled so I went for the kitchen instead…
“My original plan was to propose before Christmas but my brother got there first with his girlfriend so I couldn’t just jump in straight after.”
Alexandra – who has played Emma Brooker on the soap since 2018 – sadly lost her father in 2016 but her stepdad is a “massive part” of her life so will be by her side when she walks down the aisle, though she wants to find a way to pay tribute to her dad on the big day.
She said: “Luckily, I’ve got two dads. My stepdad Mick is a massive part of my life, so even if my dad was alive I would have had the pair of them walking me down the aisle.
“Even though my real dad won’t be there, I’ve still got Mick. “I might give him a little token from my dad – like a tie or something – so that he’s there with us on the day.”
The 27-year-old actress hasn’t found a wedding dress but she’s not planning to look for her dream gown just yet as she and Joe won’t be marrying for some time.
She said: “I need to get on Pinterest for inspiration. When I was younger I saved loads of pictures of wedding dresses but now I look back and don’t like any of them. “We won’t be getting married for another couple of years, so it’ll be difficult to pick something I’m always gonna love.”
When the big day does come around, the couple want a traditional celebration, though they won’t marry in church.
Joe said: “We won’t have the wedding in a church because we’re not religious.”
Alexandra added: “But we’ll go as traditional as possible. Bouquet toss, first dance, vows, speeches – we’ll do all of that.”
