OHMYGOSSIP — David Tag lost two friends to suicide during lockdown.
The ‘Hollyoaks’ actor – who plays Sylver McQueen in the soap – wants men to speak more openly about their struggles and has encouraged them to join up with MenWalkTalk, which aims to bring guys together to reduce social isolation and give them the opportunity to talk.
David – who became an ambassador for the charity a few years ago after going through a break-up – said: “Even the happiest of faces can suffer from mental health problems.
“The charity organises get-togethers where you can open up to each other.
“I am a strong-willed person and I found during lockdown a lot of people suffered in a lot of different ways.
“During lockdown two people I know died by suicide.”
But David thinks there is still a “stigma” around men’s mental health.
He added in an interview with the Manchester Evening News newspaper: “When it gets down to the nitty gritty men pull back and think ‘I’m being pathetic, weak and stupid.’
“There is a stigma.”
David believes MenWalkTalk can help guys tackle their problems as being close to nature can help them to relax and open up more.
He said: “We get so wrapped up in the day to day life, when you go outside and see the nice views it helps you to relax.”
The 36-year-old actor praised ‘Hollyoaks’ for its storylines which shine a light on male mental health struggles, including last year’s hard-hitting plot which saw Adam Rickitt’s character Kyle Kelly take his own life to highlight the fact suicide is the biggest cause of death in men under 50, and Darren Osbourne’s (Ashley Taylor Dawson) battle with depression.
He said: “I am proud to be part of ‘Hollyoaks’.
“In the storyline in which Sylver killed his own mother he went to a psychologist to talk about his mental health.”
