OHMYGOSSIP — Richard Madeley returned to guest host ‘Good Morning Britain’ today (03.06.21) – and revealed he was due to co-host the show in April and May, but it was called off after Piers Morgan quit the programme.
The former ‘This Morning’ presenter was delighted to be back on the breakfast show alongside co-host Charlotte Hawkins, but admitted he was originally booked in to spend the last two months in the hot seat until that “all went west” when Piers departed ‘GMB’ in March.
Speaking to co-host Charlotte, he said: “I was due to come back in April and May because Piers was going to America, so I would’ve been sitting alongside you quite a lot then, but all that went west. So here I am.”
The 65-year-old TV presenter didn’t have any issues getting up early for ‘GMB’ today after setting three alarms, but admitted he got “very OCD” when he set his triple wake-up call, and worried his alarms wouldn’t go off.
He said: “When people know you’re doing ‘Good Morning Britain’ they’re very anxious to know how you make sure you get out of bed on time and what it’s like getting up so early.
“Personally, I find the stress is the night before setting the alarms.
“I get very OCD about it. I set the three alarms, I put the lights out and then I think, ‘Did I really set that? Did it say on?’ ”
Last month, Richard admitted he is “open” to replacing Piers on ‘GMB’.
He said: “‘Good Morning Britain’, it’s a good show to do. It suits me and, yeah, I think I suit it…
“Whether I’m going to be asked to take over, I have no idea. I have had no approach at any level formally or informally.”
Piers shocked the nation when he stepped down from his co-hosting role on ‘GMB’ in March, following controversial comments he made about Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, after her much-talked-about interview with Oprah Winfrey.
ITV confirmed at the time: “Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave ‘Good Morning Britain’. ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”
Piers later claimed ITV had asked him to apologise for his comments about Meghan, but he refused and later quit the show.
He said at the time: “ITV executives suggested to me that I should now issue an apology to calm things down.
“But I don’t believe Meghan, so why would I apologise?
“As I mused over this conundrum, ‘GMB’s ratings for yesterday came in and were the highest in our history, breaking a new record we set only last week.
“The show’s on fire, in every sense.
“But the flames are now raging uncontrollably towards me.
“To compound my growing twitchiness, I got a text from my old foe Jeremy Clarkson that read: ‘I am completely on your side.’
“Oh s***. This must be more serious than I thought. Mid-afternoon, Kevin Lygo, ITV’s Director of Television, who I’d spoken to several times since yesterday, rang to say we were now ‘on the cliff edge’ and either I apologised, or I would have to leave ‘GMB’.”
