OHMYGOSSIP — Samantha Giles says the amount of criticism she has received for wearing a wig on ‘Emmerdale’ has been “a nightmare”.
The 49-year-old actress reprised her role as Bernice Blackstock on the ITV soap last week, and she is now wearing a wig while in character because the make-up team are unable to do her hair because of coronavirus pandemic restrictions – and she has been hit with “a lot of flak” for her tresses choice.
She said: “This has been a nightmare this wig business.
“I am wearing a wig. I’ve had a lot of flak about it, actually.
“My own hair is very, very thick and wiry and it’s not like Bernice at all.
“She’s a hairdresser, so she’s got to look very quaffed.
“And I can’t do anything with my hair, I can’t make it look like that, so [the] make-up [team] agreed – because they can’t touch us or do anything to us at the moment – that a wig was the way to go.”
Samantha played Bernice on and off from 1998 until she left ‘Emmerdale’ in 2019, and she admitted it was “a real compliment” for the show’s bosses to ask her to come back to the village once again.
Speaking on ‘This Morning’, she added: “I said at the time when I left that I was quite happy if they wanted to kill the character, because you can’t have it all, can you?
“But they didn’t want to kill her and they wanted me to come back, so I thought, ‘OK, let’s do it, let’s go for it.’
“It’s a real compliment that they like the character enough to want her back.”
