OHMYGOSSIP — ‘The Masked Dancer’ bosses were left in need of a detective after they gave celebrity contestants sleuth code names – but forgot who was who.
Series producer Derek McLean has revealed he and his colleagues came up with the idea of using fictional investigators, such as the late Dame Agatha Christie characters Miss Marple and Poirot, to keep masked stars’ identities a secret, but it turned into a “really bad idea”.
He said: “For the first time ever, we decided to give them detective names, which we don’t usually do.
“We had Miss Marple, Poirot and Columbo, but it was a really bad idea.
“What happened, of course, was we couldn’t remember who was who.”
Derek admitted the ITV show’s bosses were left “tearing their hair out” trying to match the celeb with their code name, which was tricky because there was “no obvious link” between them.
He is quoted by the Daily Star newspaper’s Hot TV column as saying: “They were all in the same world of detectives and there was no obvious link for us to identify the actual celebrity.
“We tore our hair out as we couldn’t remember who was who.”
Louise Redknapp, who was said to have been Miss Marple, was unmasked as Flamingo on Sunday’s (30.05.21) episode, and she enjoyed being taller than usual thanks to her costume.
Speaking on ‘Lorraine’ today (01.06.21), she said: “When they asked me to do it they said, ‘We were thinking you could be Flamingo?’
“I said, ‘OK, I’ll be a flamingo.’ I just went with it.
“I thought I lucked out with it, because at least it was pretty and nice.
“But I have to say it was really big. I’ve always wanted to be 6ft, and I was for one evening on TV.
“It was great fun.”
Louise also admitted it was nice to “just do something” following the latest coronavirus lockdown.
She said: “It was just really nice after lockdown getting out and dancing, and just doing something.
“I felt I hadn’t expressed anything for so many months.”
