OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Coronation Street’ have won Best Soap/ Continuing Drama at the Broadcast Awards.
The ITV soap triumphed over rivals ‘Emmerdale’, ‘Hollyoaks’, and ‘Casualty’ in the category, and they were “absolutely thrilled” with the prize.
A tweet on the official ‘Corrie’ Twitter account read: “Everyone at Coronation Street is absolutely thrilled! Thank you @BroadcastAwards Raising hands
#TeamCorrie #BroadcastAwards (sic)”
The soap clinched the accolade for an episode surrounding a hard-hitting coercive control plot, in which Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew) abused Yasmeen Nazir (Shelley King) for months.
Other winners on the night included ‘Friday Night Dinner’, which took home the Best Comedy Programme.
BBC series ‘Moving On’ won the Best Daytime Programme, and ‘I May Destroy You’ clinched the Best Drama Series or Serial gong.
What’s more, ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’ won Best Entertainment Programme, and ‘The Ranganation’ took home the Best Lockdown Programme Entertainment, Comedy and Scripted.
‘Corrie’ could also taste success at this year’s National Television Awards.
The show is up for the Serial Drama accolade, and cobbles stars Jane Danson (Leanne Battersby), Charlie de Melo (Imran Habeeb), Chris Gascoyne (Peter Barlow), Sally Carman (Abi Franklin), David Neilson (Roy Cropper), and Mollie Gallagher (Nina Lucas) have been nominated for the Serial Drama Performance prize.
And Jude Riordan, who portrays Sam Blakeman in the ITV soap, is up for the Newcomer award.
The NATs will return to London’s O2 arena on September 9, with Joel Dommett set to host for the first time, taking over the reins from David Walliams.
All longlist votes must be in by 11pm on Friday, June 4, 2021. The NTA shortlist will be revealed in August when the final round of voting begins. Winners will be announced at the ceremony on ITV.
