OHMYGOSSIP — Billy Howle has claimed social media followings are a huge part of an actor’s CV.
The ‘Serpent’ star has opened up on the way Twitter and Instagram have changed the world of television, with performers’ “online presence” taken into considering for roles.
He’s quoted by the Daily Star newspaper as saying: “How many followers I have is becoming more pertinent in terms of actual decision-making within the industry.”
The 31-year-old actor admitted he has struggled with the idea of people taking that much “interest in [his] life”.
He added: “Casting directors now look at your online presence and that’s not something that’s ever come easily to me.
“Social media is very much a show but I’ve never thought that people out to have any interest in my life.”
Billy is set to star as police officer Nigel Strangeways in upcoming crime drama ‘The Beast Must Die’, with the BritBox series – an adaptation of Cecil Day-Lewis’ 1938 novel – focused on mum Frances Cairnes (Cush Jumbo) as she tries to track down her son’s killer.
Opening up on the show, he told BT.com: “First of all, it was different. Tonally it doesn’t feel like a procedural cop drama or crime drama.
“This detective character isn’t your bog-standard detective character.
“You always get the drinking or the long coat, a drink problem or whatever, but there’s something a little more to it here. It adds another dimension to it.”
And he admitted filming on the Isle of Wight added to the intensity of the drama.
He explained: “It’s a very quiet place as you’d imagine. It would be very easy to find it claustrophobic.
“You have the glorious landscapes and the sea either side of you, you feel kind of isolated. Potentially trapped. There is no real escape.”
