OHMYGOSSIP — Les Dennis feels proud he’s still working in the entertainment business.
The 67-year-old TV star – who presented ‘Family Fortunes’ from 1987 until 2002 – is proud of his own longevity and admits he’s had to “keep changing” in order to remain successful.
He said: “If I’d been doing the cabaret circuit or the club circuit or the Saturday night telly that was around in the 80s, I wouldn’t be around any more, because those shows have fallen by the wayside. So I have had to keep changing.”
Les has been cast as Sir Joseph Porter in the English National Opera’s (ENO) production of ‘HMS Pinafore’ and he’s relished the challenge at this stage of his career.
He told the Guardian newspaper: “I’m sure I’ll get tips from the people I’m working with. I loved Sir Tom Jones on the radio recently when he was asked if he needed to warm up, and he just coughed and said ‘I’m ready’. I do a little more than that.
“Every night in Hairspray we will be doing a vocal warm-up, so I hope that will improve the muscles. It is a muscle, and we’ve not been using it – anybody that is on stage, that is.”
The ENO production – which will be Les’ opera debut – is to be directed by Cal McCrystal, who best known for working on ‘One Man, Two Guvnors’ and the ‘Paddington’ movies.
Annilese Miskimmon, the artistic director, recently said: “The season is one in which all can encounter the joy, the drama and the emotion of the most beautiful of art forms.
“The 2021/22 season offers a collection of stories from across opera’s history that are as pertinent today as ever. We have not let the past difficult year dim our ambition and I look forward to welcoming audiences both new and old back to the ENO’s home, the London Coliseum.”
