OHMYGOSSIP — Prue Leith hates wasting food.
The 81-year-old chef has revealed she becomes “really cross” when she burns anything because she hates seeing food go to waste.
The ‘Great British Bake Off’ star said: “I was born in 1940, at the start of the Second World War.
“My family was privileged, but the wartime mentality of ‘waste not, want not’ still prevailed.
“I remember putting a lot of butter on my bread and my father saying, rather tartly, ‘Do you want some bread with your butter?’”
Prue admits the question left a life-long impression on her and she still thinks about it to this day.
She told Radio Times: “I’ve been anxious not to waste anything ever since.
“If I do, I am very angry with myself. I get really cross if I burn anything.”
Prue also thinks it’s important to educate young people about the importance of cooking and sustainability.
She explained: “I’ve spent 60 years trying to persuade governments to teach children to love food.
“A great way is to get them to grow vegetables and then cook them, so they are invested in the whole process.
“We have to teach them not only how to cook, but about sustainability. Food education has to be just as important as maths.”
Meanwhile, ‘The Great British Bake Off’s judges and hosts are isolating in a luxury hotel ahead of the new series.
Prue, Paul Hollywood, Noel Fielding, and Matt Lucas have set up camp in Down Hall Hotel & Spa in Hertfordshire before filming starts on the new series in July.
A TV insider recently said: “Although many of the rules and regulations that made filming difficult are now easing, the producers of the show wanted to be extra cautious.
“Lockdown is still set to fully lift next month, but changing events could mean that doesn’t happen, or restrictions that have recently eased could be brought back into force. But this covers them for any eventuality – it also means they’ll enjoy a rather nice retreat too.”
