OHMYGOSSIP — Richard Madeley is “open” to replacing Piers Morgan on ‘Good Morning Britain’.
The veteran TV presenter will be stepping in as a guest host on the ITV breakfast show next month, and while he believes the job “suits [him]”, he hasn’t be approached by ‘GMB’ bosses to fill the role permanently.
He told The Sun newspaper: “‘Good Morning Britain’, it’s a good show to do. It suits me and, yeah, I think I suit it…
“Whether I’m going to be asked to take over, I have no idea. I have had no approach at any level formally or informally.”
Richard insisted there is nothing in the pipeline just yet, but he’s hoping they’ll “ask [him] back” after the guest appearance and put a good offer on the table.
It comes after Piers abruptly left the breakfast programme earlier this year following his controversial comments about the Duchess of Sussex following her much-talked-about Oprah Winfrey interview.
He added: “The phone hasn’t rung, I haven’t had a ping into my inbox.
“The bookies have me down as the front-runner and there have been opinion polls where I’ve come out reasonably well, but there’s a huge difference between that and it being a reality.
“I’ll go in, I’ll fill in, I’ll enjoy it and I hope they ask me back. But in terms of sitting in for Piers, it’s a completely open question.”
The likes of Adil Ray – who has been guest co-hosting the show alongside Susanna Reid this week – Robert Rinder and Ben Shephard have all been rumoured, but Richard has given his support to Alastair Campbell, who presented alongside Susanna last week, while suggesting ITV bosses are “taking their time”.
He said: “I thought he did very well. I think ITV are taking their time. It’s a big loss losing Piers.
“He’s a big beast to suddenly disappear from that jungle and they’ll want to be sure the permanent replacement will work.”
Piers previously questioned ITV’s decision to get former Labour spin doctor Alastair involved and engaged in “lively debate”.
He wrote: “My ex-TV wife Susanna Reid told viewers her new partner was ‘someone to provoke strong reaction and lively debate, tackle the big issues and speak in a language that real people understand’.
“Hmm, that sounds familiar! Then GMB’s Twitter account urged Campbell: ‘Welcome to the team! We can’t wait for some fiery debates, don’t hold back!’ Hmm, again.
“Given the manner of my departure, this seems extremely unwise advice.”
