OHMYGOSSIP — Anna Maxwell Martin based her “nasty” ‘Line of Duty’ character on her showbiz co-stars.
The 43-year-old actress plays the passive-aggressive DCS Patricia Carmichael in the BBC drama series, and has said she took inspiration for the character from real-life people she has worked with in the showbiz industry.
She said: “I know people now like Patricia, people in the industry like Patricia.
“She’s dead nasty but they are the easiest people to play. I love it.
“I’m not socially confident or anything. When you play those people you have to come into a room and be like the top b**** … it’s quite frightening.”
Anna added Patricia often just “wants a cuddle” but has no-one around to give her one.
And the actress also said her character’s famous icy stare comes in handy when it comes to parenting her two daughters – Maggie, 11, and Nancy, eight – whom she has with her ex Roger Michell.
Speaking on the ‘Obsessed with Line of Duty’ podcast, she added: “I do give them ‘the face’ occasionally … I save ‘the face’ for very special occasions.”
Adrian Dunbar – who plays AC-12’s Superintendent Ted Hastings – previously said some of his favourite scenes to film on the show have been with Anna, after her character was brought in to interrogate his.
He said: “I did like the interrogation at the end of season five, with Anna Maxwell Martin – I thought she brought a great character in to interrogate me.
“I love the interrogation scenes because they are like little one-act plays, they have all these twists and turns in them and are so engrossing.
“I know a lot of actors who have said to me, who’d have thought you could put a two-shot on screen for twenty minutes and people would be absolutely locked in, how does that work?
“Well it does work, when the story is great and you’ve got these fabulous twists and turns – so those are my favourite bits!”
