OHMYGOSSIP — Ian Wright is reminded of his stepfather’s “cruelty” towards him every time he hears the ‘Match of the Day’ theme tune.
The retired footballer-turned-pundit’s stepdad used to make him stand with his nose to the wall when the football highlights show was on because he knew it was the former England striker’s favourite programme, and Ian still gets “a feeling” when he hears the iconic jingle while working on the show.  
He said: “Every time I’m on and the music starts, I get a feeling, because that was pure cruelty.
“He did it just because he could. In one way it’s empowering – look at how Match of the Day first came into my life, and what I’m doing now.
“‘Match of the Day’ can’t mean as much to any of those other guys as it does to me.
“They can say they love it, but it doesn’t resonate as it resonates with me.”
The Arsenal star also had to sleep up against the same wall alongside his whole family in one room, and his brother Morris would put his hands over Ian’s ears to protect him from hearing his stepfather beat his mother.
Ian – who is to open up about the abuse he suffered at the hands of his stepfather in BBC domestic violence documentary ‘Home Truths’ – added to Radio Times magazine: “The wall was horrible.
“It was bloody freezing cold, and at the time I was very asthmatic.
“The bed was up against the wall, so I was lying right next to it, and my ears were being covered.
“It was a horrible, claustrophobic thing. I don’t like thinking about it.”
Ian has previously spoken about his “traumatic childhood”.
Speaking about his stepfather, he said: “He was a real … how can I say this? He was a weed-smoking, gambling, coming-home-late, gambling-his-wages, womanising kind of guy. He was rough with my mum and rough with all of us kids.
“And I don’t know why, but he didn’t like me in particular. Maybe it was because I was the youngest boy, but some of the stuff he did? He’d go out of his way to be cruel in all sorts of other ways – and over the oddest things.”
