OHMYGOSSIP — James May thinks he’s “metrosexual”.
The ‘Grand Tour’ host – who has been in a relationship with Sarah Frater for 20 years – is known for his macho image thanks to presenting motoring shows with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond, but he insisted he’s very different off screen because he loves poetry, art, and facials.
He said: “I’m never quite sure what metrosexual means; it’s one of those words you hear bandied around but if it means I’m as happy building a motorbike as reading some modern British poetry or going to an art gallery, then that’s what I am.
“Sarah gave me a facial once. I don’t think it made me look any younger but it felt nice.”
And despite his career, the 58-year-old star has barely driven a car over the last year.
He said: “I used the car once or twice to take big piles of cardboard to what I still call the dump, a mile and a half down the road, and I drive a van once a week for a food charity but that’s been it.
“I have missed driving. But it’s not like an addict missing a drug. I like cars but they’re not really my life.”
The former ‘Top Gear’ presenter has found the coronavirus lockdowns gave him many opportunities to better himself.
He said: “I know a lot of people have suffered but for me [the lockdowns have] been fairly constructive.
“There was a lot to improve but now I’m virtually perfect. Apart from the bits of me that aren’t, which are most bits.
“I’ve been learning German, I’ve been doing piano practice and I’ve made a lot of things out of wood. And I’m definitely healthier. I don’t own scales so I don’t know what I weighed before but I’m less flabby.”
But that doesn’t mean he isn’t ready for restrictions to lift so he and his partner can enjoy “the really small stuff” again.
Speaking to Times Weekend, he said: “We weren’t sick of each other at all. We have been enjoying quite simple pleasures like cooking and gardening – actually I can’t declare I’ve been doing much gardening, apart from moving pots around and labouring.
“But now it’s the really small stuff we’re craving. It’s not going on a big holiday, it’s going to the cinema or an exhibition, just meeting in the pub, going out for a cuppa.”
