OHMYGOSSIP — Gemma Whelan is set to play the lead role in ‘The Tower’.
The 39-year-old actress has been cast as Detective Sergeant Sarah Collins in ITV’s three-part series, which is based on ‘Post Mortem’, the first in Kate London’s series of novels.
The story has been adapted by ‘Homeland’ writer and executive producer Patrick Harbinson and filming is poised to begin later this month.
The series is set to focus on the relationship between Gemma’s on-screen character and the novice police officer Lizzie Griffiths, and Sarah’s efforts to uncover the mystery of a teenage girl who fell to her death from a tower block.
ITV has confirmed that more casting details will be announced in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, Gemma – who is best known for playing Yara Greyjoy in ‘Game of Thrones’ – previously revealed that she had to compromise her principles during the first day of shooting the HBO fantasy series.
She shared: “I’m a vegetarian. My brother Theon kills two boys and comes back thinking he’s a hero.
“In the script it says my character is eating meat. I thought I’d just tell them on the day that I don’t eat meat and we could bring in a meat substitute. I didn’t know the calibre of the show at the time and the set guy made a whole vat of chicken, so I ate chicken all day. I just told myself I was going method!
“The protein hit was quite something.”
Gemma also knew how her character would evolve before she shot her first scene.
She said: “When the casting breakdown was given out, before I even auditioned, it said I have a much greater role in later seasons. Of course, you never believe what you read, and things change, but everything I was told would happen has happened.”
