OHMYGOSSIP — Nicola Charles claims two of her ‘Neighbours’ castmates tried to get her deported from Australia.
The 51-year-old actress – who was born in the UK – starred on the Australian soap in the 1990s and 2010s, and has alleged that she was targeted for “taking a job from an Australian”.
In her book – which has been previewed by the Herald Sun newspaper – Nicola alleges she discovered a handwritten letter sent to the immigration department during the mid-90s.
She shared: “I did know who they were, the individuals who did it, but I thought – who goes to that length, and what have I done to be disliked that much?
“That experience coloured my relationships with everyone on the cast and crew, because I kind of felt nervous about trusting anyone after that.”
Nicola was born in England and her ‘Neighbours’ bosses knowingly employed her as “a British actor”.
She said: “Then my immigration lawyer told me the letter complained that a British actor had been given a full-time role on the show, thus taking a job away from an Australian.
“But the show employed me as a British actor. I was written into the show.”
The allegations emerged after former ‘Neighbours’ actor Meyne Wyatt claimed he’d experienced racism on the set of the long-running soap.
Fremantle Media – the production company behind ‘Neighbours’ – subsequently pledged to do more to tackle discrimination and promote inclusivity.
A spokesperson for Fremantle Media told the BBC: “‘Neighbours’ strives to be a platform for diversity and inclusion on-screen and off-screen.
“Our quest is always to continue to grow and develop in this area and we acknowledge that this is an evolving process.”
